Has become the elephant in the room.
This is getting worse every day. Is America affected yet?

i think the stats coming from China are greatly minimised. Cities like Wuhan are suffering horribly.

One good thing about China is that sick people tend to wear masks to protect others. They have a sense of shared responsibility to protect their elders and other vulnerable people.
I cant imagine the majority of Aussies wearing masks and walking down the street.

Wearing a face mask is not an iron clad guarantee that you won’t get sick – viruses can also transmit through the eyes and tiny viral particles, known as aerosols, can still penetrate masks. However, masks are effective at capturing droplets, which is the main transmission route of coronavirus, and some studies have estimated a roughly five-fold protection versus no barrier.

Face masks offer some protection. About 5 fold protection.

The main thing is for sick people to wear them in public, so they don't cough on others.

I think it's way over dramatised to the point of stupidity. A supermarket has ran out of food here because people are preparing and loading up on food. Lol. There is only 1 case here.

That's what happens when brainwashed zombies watch the mainstream media and live in fear because the media over dramatises everything, that's there job, to get your attention.

60 something Americans...2 cases in california where the infected parties seem to have gotten it -in their communities- , so...the actual # could be higher (this, from CNN).

Trump apparently shredded (eliminated?) the CDC pandemic unit, so...this is going to be awesome.

This may, perhaps, make me sound like a conspiracy theorist or some paranoid individual, but...I'm kind of concerned about personal freedoms, in the US and worldwide. Maybe I'm being too sensitive (LOL), but the heavy use quarantine and such...seems like something that could be be misused and misapplied, quite easily. hopefully just a fleeting worry, no big deal...

in other news, some people are stocking up as if the Apocalypse was nigh. I don't know what to make of it, honestly. Seems that the flu is more of a threat, but this is yet another "security risk" in a socially and politically disintegrating world, so...

there ya go. :)

Seems that the flu is more of a threat...

Its not the flu. Preliminary estimates are that its 10 times more than the flu. If it become prevalent in the general population like the flu is, that's trouble.

The flu zaps 30,000 Americans per year. If this thing is the flu times 10...

Labs around the world are working on developing treatments. The current strategy is to delay corona's advance into general population until treatments can be developed.

In Canada and Britain, they have drive through testing facilities where people can get quickly tested for free. In the USA, they were using test kits that don't even work. One American who visited China felt a responsibility to get tested to protect others. He went to the doctor, then got a bill for thousands of dollars. Don't expect many Americans to get tested in those circumstances. They just don't know how many Americans are infected.

Action has finally started in the USA, so there is hope.

Dan is correct...
Things have been wayyyyy overdramatized in the media.

The incubation period and infectiousness is the key.

The infectiousness is rather normal...it isn't that infectious.
The incubation period is also short...a good thing... meaning those who might have been exposed can be quarantined for short periods and the virus getting away from us is less likely.

Just like the influenza viruses have many strains Corona viruses also have many strains. This one that has made the news is slightly more infectious than the other strains...which every country has had several people every year infected with. We have had several cases here in TN (not the famous strain) and everyone recovered.

I've had contact with friends in China...things are going on fairly normal there...they don't understand the fuss about it all. It isn't a pandemic in any fashion like the media would like you to believe.

It's when the media starts reporting about it and starts off with that there is nothing to fear that it's time to worry. Not now...they act like everyone is dying over this.

I think there are two things that have the health services community most concerned.

First, is the incubation period which is estimated to last approximately 14 days, although this is only an estimate as they really don't know for sure. The problem is that a person could be contagious during those 14 days but not be experiencing symptoms themselves yet. By comparison, people are contagious with the flu for about 24 hours before symptoms become evident.

The second concern is the lack of an effective vaccine. This is a new strain of coronavirus and it may take some time before a vaccine can be developed.

Here's something to think about. So far, the coronavirus is believed to have infected somewhere around 85,000 people and taken the lives of around 3,000. By comparison, it it estimated that somewhere approaching 650,000 people are infected with a flu each year and about 125,000 die from it.

That's 650,000 Americans hospitalized, not catching the flu.

Time said:
In total, the CDC estimates that up to 42.9 million people got sick during the 2018-2019 flu season, 647,000 people were hospitalized and 61,200 died.

So that's 61,000 out of 42 million flu cases in the USA, compared to 3000 out of 85,000 for confirmed corona cases. A statistically significant difference. There may be millions of unconfirmed/untested corona cases, but we just don't know yet. Going just by available data, corona is far more dangerous to the elderly than the flu.

Globally, the flu zaps 650,000 people annually.

Healthy people from 10 to 60 are in no real danger from either the flu or corona. Its being contained to protect the elderly and young children. Corona could devastate nursing homes, zapping millions of elderly worldwide. Healthy people from 10 to 60 would only experience a minor inconvenience for a few days from catching corona.

Another factor, flu vaccines can protect from about half of flu viruses. The elderly can get an annual flu vaccine for some protection, and go to their doctors for Tamiflu for additional protection if they catch one of the flu strains not protected by vaccine. There is no vaccine or treatment for corona. The elderly are completely vulnerable. If we don't protect them by containment, millions of elderly could get zapped.

I got the flu twice this year...not just once.
Both were type A.
I took tamiflu (generic version) and got better.

I wasn't the only one.
No hospitalization...I self quarantined. (I felt like dirt)

A bunch of other people had it and didn't bother going to the doctor to seek treatment.

So.... Corona viruses are similar in that they make you sick and there are many strains.
Even if they had a vaccine it might not be effective against the strain you catch. I know a guy here in TN that had it...he thought that it was flu...it wasn't. It was a Corona strain different from the one in China...so it doesn't get reported.
But he went through three weeks of being sick and now is all better and back at work.

I got my testing for both bouts of flu at a Walgreens "Doc-in-a-Box" so...who knows whether it gets reported or not.

But there are definitely more cases of flu than 650,000 every year. Dunno where you got that statistic.
CDC reports about 29 Million people have gotten the flu so far this year. LINK
That sounds much more appropriate.

If it weren't for people going to work, school or church sick... wouldn't be such an issue. But that's the primary reason it spreads. Church is the biggest risk. Church holds a huge contingent of elderly people and children...it's a nightmare waiting to happen.
Everyone whines about doctor bills and medication costs. But then they go to the most expensive thing possible by going to the emergency room. Makes no sense to me.
$200 for a flu visit or a $10 flu shot. Financially I know exactly what choice to make. But I had the flu and got super busy before I had a chance to get the stupid shot this year.
This next fall I'm going to try and get it done by September/October. While it's still hot outside. Maybe I can dodge the bullet next year.

I have had the flu ,took two days off, avoided the monthly, meet with parents and church until I'm at full strength ,etc
