They have a vaccine for the flu, and a treatment (Tamiflu). Also most people have some antibodies for the flu, which tends to make cases milder.

More should be done to protect the elderly from the flu though.

I know Coronavirus we're only beginning to understand and that = scary. Although, the flu has taken more lives and Tamiflu only works as a preventative or if taken within the first few days, otherwise it's not as effective.

I think in the USA the flu season is from around December and can go till about May. I think it was estimated near 500,000 people were hospitalized over last couple years 2018- 2019 with influenza, this year so far I haven't heard of a single case. There seems to be lots of talk about 19.

There are many illnesses still going around besides Coronavirus - trust me. There have been kids at my husband's work that parents have sent in regardless of having the flu and yup, we've all had it. Husband tested negative for Coronavirus when he felt too ill to do anything. No treatment besides anti-nausea medication because of the viral-ness of it.

Although, I'm not sure what's honestly stopping them from calling it Coronavirus if it has all the symptoms, but no proof. I remember getting a bad viral flu, and I had all these strep symptoms years ago. Doctor said, "Test says negative for strep...but your symptoms...your symptoms....." He prescribed me antibiotics anyway, which I ended up having a first time reaction to and then called, got a different script. Antibiotics didn't do a thing...it was a waste of money. He called it strep because he wanted to call it strep due to the symptoms even though the test said I was negative (he assumed false negative without proof).

Also, they are probably so focused on Coronavirus that the flu numbers aren't as out there as normal. I remember a hospital where we used to live would have their Flu/RSV season from March to May or June (this is when the most cases would come in) so they would only allow visitors if they have their temperature checked and such to be sure they aren't exhibiting symptoms and this was back in 2018, but I suppose they did it every year.

Here are the most recent flu numbers I see from the CDC from October 1, 2019 - April 4, 2020:

-39,000,000 – 56,000,000
flu illnesses

-18,000,000 – 26,000,000
flu medical visits

-410,000 – 740,000
flu hospitalizations

-24,000 – 62,000
flu deaths

As of now in my country we have 0 cases of 19, and 0 new cases in weeks. It's apparently now let's say eliminated.

I'm not a bio scientist so I am not in anyway claiming a fact but I am thinking if 19 has been eliminated then also the common cold and flu should also have been eliminated. Maybe a bio scientist can explain more. Maybe it has, maybe not, I'm just guessing no one should get any type of flu now as 19 is suppose to be more severe than any common flu or influenza.

I mean if one person has the common flu today or tommorow, I mean, that's what I'm trying to ask.

Wow, that's insane. It's a good thing, though. Low flu rate...can't complain about that!

I'm not a bio-scientist, either. I suppose this Coronavirus thing has a lot of different outcomes. Not sure how much in common is has with colds or flu, but mutations and all that are something. I suppose it's a matter of waiting and praying this gets better.

Hospitalization is what the lockdown was all about. Italy's hospitals were quickly filled beyond capacity, and started turning people away. Many US state health departments feared the same would happen here. Medics estimated that letting corona spread unchecked would have led to millions needing hospitals all at once, and they didn't have the capacity.

Because of the lockdown, only 216,259 Americans are currently hospitalized for corona. A number hospitals have beds for. If they would have had enough hospital capacity for millions, they could have just let business carry on as usual, protecting just the elderly.

And it also takes a few months for it to be effective.

From what I'm hearing none of the new vaccines are going to be that effective.

Meaning that a cure antiviral like Tamiflu or the antibody shots is going to be our thing to get out of quarantine.

My guess is that it's going to be like the Flu. There's still a risk of getting it just a lower risk.

Although I think some things could have been done differently over the last few months, but I won't get into that as I'm trying to stay away from complaining. If there is something positive that's come out of this I think it's that people have been conditioned to look after not only there own, but other people's health now, like before people would cough and sneeze around others, where I think people are more conscious and aware now after being conditioned and will cover it. So this whole 19 thing I think has helped prevent the general spread of germs. Many people have been regularly washing and sanitising there hands, so they probably so used to it now they will carry on doing it. So yea, I mean that's a good thing.

I tuned in an interview of an Israeli ICU doctor on JBS who stresses the importance of professional masks. They work to protect her staff, and she recommends them for others.

Israel has started manufacturing their own masks so that their people will have enough. The Israeli Defense Ministry imported the machines to do so. They are taking biowarfare preparations seriously. I think the US military should do likewise.

Make enough for the elderly anyway.

Hello.
Has anyone here heard of the "SmartNews" app for phone and pc?
It has fairly extensive news covererage on the Covid virus, and it updates frequently during the day, notifying thru the icon on phone.
It constantly shows daily amount of infections and deaths world wide. It is a fairly good news site covering numerous different topics.
First thing I read when I get up in morning.

No, but I still spotted this in the regular news this morning.

I live in central Tx and we are under virtual lockdown once again with mandatory facemasks with no end in sight for the forseeble future. HEB is once again setting limits on certain items.

Latest US and Worldwide stats on Covid 19:

Without a vaccine and/or following CDC guidelines, it is said this virus will spread exponentially and the fact it is worldwide, makes it even more difficult to control.
The recovery rates are promising and the death rate is a small percentage of total cases.

Coronavirus Worldometer Sections:

The thing that so many of us keep losing sight of is that all the closures and other actions taken have not been for the purpose of stopping the virus from spreading. It has always been about slowing the spread so that we don't overwhelm hospitals with patients. Over the past few months we have increased our hospitals' capacities to handle more patients, the virus has proven to not be as bad as first thought so that reduces the potential load on hospitals, and it is expected (not proven yet) that the virus, like many coronaviruses, will be able to be managed by herd immunity which can be accomplished in two ways - direct infection or vaccination. The latter being the preferred of course. Obviously the jury is still out on that part.

What I see as funny is how people make it sound like a surprise that case counts are on the rise. Well, no kidding! We came to a point where health care facilities are better prepared and also learned that the virus is not as bad as first thought so we began opening our economy in a controlled fashion. Of course the number of cases are climbing!

Compared to early on we have also ramped up our ability to do testing. Early on, the only people tested were those admitted to a hospital due to severe symptoms. Those with sever symptoms only amount to about 14% of the actual infections. Now we are testing more people besides those who have been admitted into the hospitals. Of course the number of known cases are on the incline!

What did we expect? Sheesh!
