Isaac Is Promised 17-27

Genesis Seventeen

King James Bible Par ▾

Abram Named Abraham

1And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.

2And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.

3And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying,

4As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.

5Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.

6And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee. 7And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. 8And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.

The Covenant of Circumcision
Leviticus 12:1-8; Joshua 5:1-9; Acts 15:1-4)

9And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations. 10This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. 11And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you. 12And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed. 13He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. 14And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.

15And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be. 16And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her. 17Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear? 18And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee! 19And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him. 20And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation. 21But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year. 22And he left off talking with him, and God went up from Abraham.

23And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham's house; and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said unto him. 24And Abraham was ninety years old and nine, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 25And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 26In the selfsame day was Abraham circumcised, and Ishmael his son. 27And all the men of his house, born in the house, and bought with money of the stranger, were circumcised with him.

And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you

When I actually take the time to talk back and forth with the Lord I find He is just weird!!!

It is written that His thoughts are not my thoughts and something about He thoughts being above my thoughts something like the heavens are above the earth. So I find Him weird for a couple of reasons. One is that God is spirit! He thinks in spiritual/heavenly terms, but I tend to think in worldly or fleshy terms. He is also weird because He is just a whole lot smarter than me, or even than I can imagine.

Now I want to point out in the above quote the words "it shall be a token of the covenant"

Now I can go to a gaming place where I might get "tokens" to us in the machines. Tokens are not money but represent money. but only money between me and that gaming place. In the same way the circumcision of the flesh was only a token which represents something!

I guess Paul with over this, didn't He.

Gen 3:16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, “And to your seed,” that is, Christ.

So the covenant was between Abraham and Jesus Christ - not us!!!

The covenant/ the promises is not between God and us, but between Abraham and his seed - which turns out to be the Christ!

Of course that doesn't mean it didn't effect us, but only that the promises or covenant was not with us. It effected the men in Abrahams house right away, and it still has an effect on us today. Still, though there was a fleshy token, the token is not the real thing. Remember, God is spirit and He tends to talk in spiritual terms. So the men of Abraham house, spiritually speaking, are those who hear from the Lord by faith like Abraham did.

That is why Paul wrote other things explaining this to the Galatians - things like:

Gal 3:5 So then, does He who provides you with the Spirit and works miracles among you, do it by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith?

Gal 3:6 Even so Abraham BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS RECKONED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Gal 3:7 Therefore, be sure that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham.

So it is that because of that covenant - we are saved by faith and faith comes by hearing the Lord talk to us.

In Gen 15 we read that Abram heard from the Lord in a vision, and he believed it was the Lord who was talking to Him. That faith was counted to him as righteousness. Because of the covenant (not with us but between Abraham and God) we are also counted as righteous if it is shown by our hearing with faith, that we are spiritually speaking the sons of Abraham.

It is really all very simple, but we like to make things complicated!

Simply put - seek the Lord Jesus Christ because you believe He is there and then listen in your spirit to His Spirit!

Of course we can go over all the ramifications of the Law and covenants, and the little details involved with all that. You might even want to study that and examine it closely, but it still just comes back to hearing the Lord by faith.

That is why Paul wrote: Gal 3:2 This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith?

The only thing that really needs to be know is whether you are receiving the Spirit by hearing with faith!

Actually - I don't need to know that but you do. So are you hearing the Lord Jesus Christ via the Holy Spirit talking to your spirit? The Spirit does not speak on His own initiative but He takes the words of God which belong to Jesus Christ and speaks them to your spirit. So you will hear the words of God in your spirit.

Jn 6:63 “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.

That was what was happening with Abram, and should be what is happening with you. The Holy Spirit is not the only spirit of course, so test the spirit, but God is omni-present and the Lord or lords, so all those who seek Him will find Him.

Also - if you seek Him you will find Him, and if you find Him you will find He loves to teach you, and if He teaches you via the Holy Spirit He will go over numerous things but the Scriptures are good for teaching by Him the Teacher! The point is that so often we want to be the teacher instead of pointing people to Him the Teacher!

The Spirit once told me, "Karl, we don't use the Lord to preach the Scriptures, we use the Scriptures to preach the Lord."

Preaching and teaching are not quite the same thing, but the Lord is the Teacher, is he not? So I like to share what He has gone over with me, but what I really like doing is getting people to seek Him for themselves.
