well, heidi, i'm a christian who believes in an old earth (now, i also believe no one really knows)
here's why - i took anthropology in school and learned about various digs and discoveries etc... and when these people dated them they always came up with consistent dates - whether it's 25 000 year old sites in north or south america or sites a few million years old in africa. here's why i tend to believe these dates - for them to be fake it would require the entire scientific (not just anthropological) community to be involved in some sort of giant conspiracy. i tend not to believe those sorts of things. second - though the theory has many flaws and is incomplete it at least is a workable theory that attempts to account for what people find in the earth instead of simply saying 'no, it's not true' and mostly dismisses evidence. in my opinion, christian thinkers would be better off objectively working with whatever fossils are found and go from there than go in with the assumption that the earth is young and try to find flaws to support that.
just to let you know that there are christians who believe these things without having the aim of watering down the bible. the important thing is that God created the world - when doesn't matter and how organisms lived and adapted after He created the earth doesn't really either. it's just interesting.

I understand what you are saying. I know Christians who have a very close relationship to the Lord that believe the same way. I was trying to state in my own unintellectual and imperfect way that I don't think it makes a difference which way a Christian believes, it will not change their eternal salvation any more than if you believe in pre, mid, or post tribulation rapture. I also don't think all Christians believe this way to "water down", but I do believe that some who do try to do this from either side (non-Christians as well).

My brother is a very devout Christian who believes in an old earth, I use to myself. It has been over the past several years and my study of the Bible that has brought about my own convictions on this. I do not put my faith in Science but in God and His Word. As I said, I am willing and interested in learning more but it will not change the way I believe.

Please do not feel I am trying to be judgmental of other Christians who believe differently than me, I am sorry if I came across that way. There are many issues in our walk with Christ that God works on differently with each of us. Some listen to secular music or drink an occasional beer and that is fine, we are individuals and God works with us accordingly. I personally feel that believing the way I do has given me a better understanding of who He is which in turn has caused a deeper relationship with Him.

i agree with that post totally. i didn't think you came across as anything negative, i just thought i'd throw in my own example, that's all. :)

^Cool! :biggrin

I was figuring that but just wanting to make sure!

Thanks! :biggrin

Hello

I think that the whole thing with this is stupid. If we cane from monkeys(which we didn't) then where did they come from. Someone answer this please

What do you mean? Modern chimpanzees (which we did not evolve from) or the common ancestor which we did evolve from?

Chimps evolved from that same common ancestor as we did; they just went in a different direction.

By the way, thankyou for posting here. I needed a distraction from this damnable aerodynamics spreadsheet I'm doing. More people need to post on this forum!

As yet, I have never heard of a single such 'young-Earth theory' finding it's way through a peer-reviewed scientific journal. Ever. And believe me; if one was and it stood up to repeated experiment and suchlike, you would hear about it.

If I may make a statement here, it seems like you put the utmost importance on 'peer-reviewed scientific journal' printings, but (correct me if I am wrong here), are not they all controlled by people who believe old-earth evolution to be true?

So why would they put something in their magazines that contradicts their theory? :o

If you go all the way back, everything came from a rock. So next time you see Grand Canyon, go up and put a great big hug and kiss upon you:

great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, grandfather.

Most scientists are theists. What on Earth would their motivation be? How would they communicate between each other? Do you believe a shady scientific illuminati control it all from smoke-filled rooms?

Sometimes you have to look conspiracy theories in the face and wonder exactly how likely they are.
