not to advertise Orthomolecular (yet again...), but...

Orthomolecular is just a bunch of common vitamins and minerals (B-complex, C, zinc, selenium, etc.) that you mix n match at various doses, depending on your concerns, age, what your MD/DO says to do, etc. Ideally, this sort of supplementation -should- involve a professional of some sort overseeing things. I just cobbled my own DIY protocol together out of necessity (no insurance, living in the middle of nowhere, etc.). As one might imagine, I skipped over anything too expen$ive (read: no professionally performed vitamin C infusions for this dewd) and/or potentially toxic (easy on the D3, for instance).

Does it...work? I dunno. I say "I dunno" because there was a lot going on in my personal situation, but I will say...

my "affliction" now responds well to standard treatment. An 'atypical' antipsychotic, an as needed anti-anxiety drug (not a benzodiazepine, thank goodness), sometimes an antidepressant (thankfully, I now respond to newer ones quite well...way back when, I actually needed old school drugs to get the job done...sad, but true). and...

I don't have tardive dyskinesia. I don't have the stiff muscles, drug induced depression, and I don't even seem to get the stiff walk ("Thorazine shuffle"--its when an antipsychotic makes someone walk zombie-like, and its surprisingly common, over the long haul) that I once had. I -had- tardive dyskinesia...now, I don't. Antioxidants, to the rescue? Possibly. Something of a miracle? Possible, also, I think.

that's me. The cool thing about Orthomolecular is that, because each and every vitamin and essential mineral is involved in so many different processes in the body, the 'experts' say there are 'side benefits' (get it? like 'side effects,' only awesome), so one gets multiple benefits.

I am healthy. To max out potential benefits, I copied the Ortho protocols sometimes used to support better health in people with cancer, many of whom -also- opted for surgery and other 'conventional' treatments. Orthomolecular has been used in place of conventional treatments, mostly when patients simply cannot tolerate them, often because their bodies are too far gone from the ravages of whatever ails them.

rambling... a lot of the Ortho nutrients (vitamin c, b-complex, alpha lipoic acid, chromium sometimes, beta carotene, vitamin E, zinc, selenium) benefit...metabolic concerns, be it simple weight loss or straight up diabetic conditions. Some people are able to manage on just nutrients, it seems that many more opt for nutrients+carefully selected prescription drugs, both in metabolic issues and with other health issues (like my situation, as an example).

some of the Orthomolecular treatments for metabolic concerns--vegetable juice fasting, for instance--strike me as...not ideal for many people, but others, such as reducing dairy, reducing animal protein intake, going up on fruits and vegetables and whole grains, etc., are a good idea for most people (including...me, writing this after waking up after a delicious, but fatty, meal...).

OK...obviously, its your body, your life, your decision. different people take different approaches. I just thought I'd share what has (probably...) helped me. :)
