The scriptures pointed to two separate messiahs , one that would vanquish Israel's enemies and break them with a rod of iron , and another that would be led to the slaughter like a lamb.
The inherent confusion only multiplied by the fact that the Messiah was never considerd to be the actual condensation of God Himself by the Jews .
This persists to this very day .
Did you know that in 2020 that while the Jews are indeed looking for the Messiah , they believe that the Messiah will be a special man chosen by God , but will only be a man .
Who will die just the way me and you will die .
This confusion may have led to John's question .

John knew He came to make a straight path to Jesus. (Lord)
John called Jesus the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the World.
John knew Jesus came from above and spoke the words of one who comes from above.

John knew and understood these things before Jesus chose and taught His apostles. As John was more than a prophet.

This suggest John also was knowledgeable in the scriptures.

John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.'"

The straight path John laid the foundations for Jesus was salvation by the forgiveness of sins which is found in Jesus.

What do you think prompted John the Baptist to ask Jesus , " shall we look for another " ?

What do you think prompted John the Baptist to ask Jesus , " shall we look for another " ?
My thoughts on who sowed John's doubt.
Satan
John was in prison and undergoing a deep trial. Why? Isn't Jesus God's Christ? Satan attacked with doubt at Johns weakest moment. John had directed some of his disciples to follow Jesus. To me Johns question was for confirmation as he was facing death.

I don't believe John had any doubts in the certainty of the Kingdom Of Heaven being
established :
: ..for the kingdom of heaven is AT HAND "
I think John's belief that it was " AT HAND " is what led directly to his question .
The Kingdom has still not been established after all .
Looking at the scriptures pre-resurrection there is definitely cause for some confusion on the timeline . Between a suffering Messiah and one that will crush his enemies with a rod of iron.
For me, I believe the correct interpretation of what John is asking is not " shall we look for another" MESSIAH ?
But rather " Shall we look for another APPEARENCE of You Lord Messiah " .
I think his question has been butchered in the interpretation of it .

great article - like this part the best:

Could John’s Question About the Messiah Have Been Asked for His Disciple’s Sake?
As for the Matthew 11:2–3 and Luke 7:19–20 passages, remembering that John had previously pointed his own disciples to Jesus (John 1:35–36), could this question John had his disciples ask not have been a similar case of pointing people to the Messiah? Perhaps it was not that John doubted that Jesus was the Messiah, nor was it for his own satisfaction so much that he sent these disciples of his with this question, but for theirs: to remove all doubt and hesitation from them about Jesus. He knew that he might soon be killed, and he wanted his disciples to follow after the Messiah he himself had pointed out. John perhaps knew that Jesus when asked this question would offer undeniable truth that he was indeed the Christ, and isn’t that what Jesus did? Jesus in their sight performed great healing miracles and preached the gospel, and then tied these back to Scripture (Luke 7:21–22) by using imagery from the prophecy of Isaiah 61:1.

Jesus's answer appears to be directed at John not Johns disciples. That is Jesus Himself perceived the question for Johns sake.

Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy a are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”

That answer would have brought comfort to John who then would be certain he was in prison for his righteousness and service to God not because of any error of wrong doing.

Some have tried to claim a biblical contradiction between John 1 and the parallel passages of Matthew 11 and Luke 7. Did John the Baptist know Jesus was the Messiah?

He (John) was his (Jesus) cousin, and their parents were very close to each other, they must have gave each other updates on their children. John was born with the Holy Spirit, probably the only man to ever have been. Jesus was born by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit was with the entire family i guess, The Spirit would of had to be.
