StoveBolts,
re: "It's also worthy to note that Matthew was Jewish and writing to a Jewish audience and Passover is one of the biggest holidays of the year. So, it's our job to think like them, and not force our understanding on them."

So you're suggesting that the writer of Matthew 26:17 got it wrong (as far as Leviticus 23:6 is concerned) when he wrote that the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread was sometime before the 15th?
No, I'm suggesting that culturally, the 14th and 15th were viewed as the same day for various reasons not explained within the text at the time St. Matthew wrote it. This was normative language within his culture at the time it was written.

The idea of differing calendars can be clearly seen among Christians today in regard to Passover / Easter.

As most know, Easter falls two days after Passover. But does it? It depends on whos calendar your using. Evangelicals use the Roman Catholic reference from the Gregorian calendar which always puts Easter on the third Sunday of April. However, Orthodox Christians use the Julian calendar and as a result, Easter varies on the day of the week each year. Contrast that with the Babalonian calendar the Jews use, and Passover falls on a different day of the week. At the bottom, the Essenes used their pre-babalonian calendar which, depending on the year, Passover could fall on the same day of the week, or not as the Babalonian calender which the Temple used at the time of Jesus.

Coming full circle, there is nothing technically to reconcile between the passages. If you read both passages at face value, you cannot avoid what appears as a mistake. What is needed is a basic understanding of their culture and how they reasoned their words.

for_his_glory,
re: "This has everything to do with the OP."

I guess I'm just not smart enough to understand what your point is with regard to the OP.

BTW, you write that the Messiah was brought before Pilate on the 14th. But in your next sentence you write that the Messiah was laid in the tomb on the 13th. What am I missing?

Thank you for pointing out my mistake as I saw a few more going over what I wrote so ignore everything I have posted and will start fresh and hope it makes sense to you.

There is no discrepancy between Leviticus and Matthew. Everything in parenthesis are my explanations for clarity.

Leviticus 23:4 These are the feasts of the LORD, even holy convocations, (formal assembly of people) which ye shall proclaim in their seasons (cycle of the moon phases). 5 In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the LORD's passover (evening at sunset begins the 15th that is the day of passover making it Saturday Sabbath day as this one was a High Sabbath being the passover which is different than regular Sabbath days). 6 And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread. 7 In the first day ye shall have an holy convocation (formal assembling): ye shall do no servile work therein. Ref: Exodus Chapter 12 for the full teaching of this as God gave Moses and Aaron instruction of days as the beginning of the Lunar Calendar.

You can not change the cycle of the moon's phases, but the Lunar calendar numbering of days will change year after year just like our Gregorian calendar, but never the numbering of days of the moon's phases as God established month and days with Moses and Aaron as the number of their days never change, Exodus 12:1, 2.

Matthew 26:17 Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread (which began Thursday the 13th after sunset making it Friday the 14th, Exodus 12:6) the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover? 18 And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples. 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover. (This is the same feast of unleavened bread/passover that God told His people to assemble themselves and observe every year throughout the generations being that of the exodus out of Egypt.)

The feast of unleavened bread is also called the passover as all bread had to be baked without any yeast according to God's instruction and the lamb's after placing their blood on the door post and mantel had to be roasted and everything completely eaten before midnight as at midnight the Lord passed over Egypt and smote all the first born and Moses and Aaron and all God's people had to be ready to flee from Egypt, Exodus 12.

John has Jesus being crucified at the time the Lamb was slaughtered. Matthew, Mark and Luke have Jesus eating the Passover.

John 19:14 This was a commemorative passover that was celebrated every year,Exodus 12:14, but yet being the last passover supper Jesus would eat with His disciples. It was also the day of preparation for the sacrifice Jesus was about to make on the cross.

Exodus 12:14 And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.

John 19:14 The day of preparation was the day Jesus was scourged, beaten and brought before the Jews by Pilate as he said "Behold your King". But the crowd cried out "crucify him". Pilate then gave Jesus to them as He was led up the hill to be crucified just as the lamb's would have been on the 14th of Nissan/April being a Thursday as it was in Exodus 12:6.

What do you mean by a commemorative Passover meal? What Date do you place it? Like the 13th? I don't think I'm following you.

This is how I understand it currently. Not saying I'm right, but this is what I've learned.

When I use the dates from the Bible in Exodus 12, Nissan 14 is both the day of Preparation and the day Passover is eaten. The 14th extends till midnight while sharing the night of the 15th if you read verse 8 as the night of the 14th because it says, " that same night", referring to the 14th.

The Day of Preparation always preceded a Sabbath (Exodus 16). A Sabbath is always the 7th day of the week. However, there were special Sabbaths as well which could occur on any day of the week.

According to Leviticus 23, a special Sabbath always occurred on the 15th of Nissan which marked the beginning of the feast of unleavened bread and on the 7th day when the festival ended. Because the 24th could fall on any given day, lets day Thursday, then Friday would be a special Sabbath followed by the regular Sabbath.

In Matthews account, it appears Jesus is eating the Passover which is Nissan 14 which would have him crucified. On the 15th. The problem we have with this is that the 15th is a Sabbath and it goes against Johns account.

NIV John 19.
Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down.

Many Scholars believe the Passover meal Jesus is eating in Matthews account refers to the Passover from the calendar the Essenes used.

What I am using is the Lunar Calendar God established with Moses and Aaron being the first calendar ever used, Exodus 12:1, 2.

This is how I understand it all as it can be very confusing and every time I study this I find something new, but yet get confused trying to piece it all together with all the OT and NT scriptures.

Commemorative means every year as a memorial of the exodus per Exodus 12:11-14 as God passed over Egypt at midnight being Saturday the 15th at midnight. The same night the feast of unleavened would have been eaten in the evening of that same night, Matthew 26:17-20.

Wednesday the 12th after the disciples sat and ate with Jesus in the evening being the last supper Jesus would eat with them being in the very place in the upper room where they were told by Jesus to prepare the passover meal. The disciples went with Him that evening, possibly after sunset making it Thursday the 13th (some call it Maundy Thursday) as He went to pray in the garden in Gethsemane. (Note: this was not the Passover Seder, but only the last supper Jesus would eat with His disciples. Passover meal would not begin until after sunset on Friday the 14th when the 15th day begins at sunset at the end of the 14th)

Wednesday the 12th Jesus was betrayed by Judas then arrested and brought before the Sanhedrin. Thursday the 13th very early in the morning Jesus was brought before Pilate who passed sentence on Jesus and according to Roman law He was scourged and nailed to the cross about the third hour (3:00 PM) and died at the ninth hour (6:00PM) the same day when the Passover lambs were killed, Exodus 12:1-6.

John 19:31-42 The day of preparation I believe was Thursday the 13th (Munday Thursday as some call it) right before sunset as Joseph of Arimathaea traveled at least a half mile from Golgotha to Jerusalem as he went before Pilate to beg for the body of Jesus and then traveled that half mile again to have the body of Jesus taken down. Nicodemus would have also traveled back to Jerusalem to purchase myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight more than likely dragging all that back up the hill to Gogatha. Then they took the body of Jesus and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury as He was not yet put in the tomb, but was only being prepared for burial.

Jesus died around 6:00 PM and by the time He was prepared to be buried would have been sunset making it Friday the 14th. He died on the 13th during the day and was laid in the tomb being the 14th aftersunset. Thursday the 13th in the evening before sunset making it the 1st day and the 1st night the 14th that He died. So we have Thursday being the first day and first night – Friday 2nd day and 2nd night – Saturday 3rd day 3rd night being raised sometime between Saturday after sunset and sunrise Sunday morning.

In the exodus the lambs were being prepared before sunset as they were killled and the blood was put on the two door post and the upper door post. Then the lambs had to be roasted and eaten before midnight when God passed over Egypt. I believe this is also a reference

According to Leviticus 23:5-8 The Passover feast is a different day then the Feast of Unleavened Bread as it was eaten in the evening of the 14th before the Lord passed over Egypt on the 15th.

Leviticus 23:5 In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the LORD's passover. 6 And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread. 7 In the first day ye shall have an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein. 8 But ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD seven days: in the seventh day is an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein.

From the way I understand it, we are very close.

The Essenes used the Lunar calendar and the Temple used the Babalonian Calendar. As a result, the Passover (14th) would have fallen on different days of the week. This is how many scholars explain Jesus eating the Passover meal (14th) in Matthew and then being crucified on Passover (14th) in Johns gospel.

I've said this before, but the Jews extend the day of the 14th into the night of the 15th because God told them the lamb must be eaten that day. As you know, the day ended just past twilight when the next night began. They were commanded to slaughter the lamb at twilight, yet eat it that day ( before midnight). You can't eat it that day ( 14) if your just putting it on the fire to roast it on the 15th. Thus, they reasoned the 14th extended till midnight.

At midnight, per Levitucus 23, started the special Sabbath which was the beginning of the feast of unleavened bread.

Using Lunar time in Matthew, Jesus eats the Passover meal (14th). Using Temple time which used the Babalonian calendar John, records Jesus is crucified and dies at the same time the Passover lambs are being slaughtered on the 14th. Joseph gets his body and buries him before midnight on the 14th (temple time) prior to the special Sabbath which starts at midnight the 15th (temple time)

StoveBolts I apologize for the length of this.

The thing is we have to go by the calendar and the numbering of days God established with Moses and Aaron as those days and dates never change, Exodus 12:1-6, like that of the Lunar Calendar I posted earlier. It was the Babylonians that gave names to the days of the week from Tuesday to Saturday after the five planetary bodies and after the sun and moon being Sunday and Monday. This custom was later adopted by the Romans.

The 10th day would have been a Monday that God established with Moses and Aaron as the day they were to take a lamb and keep it until the 14th being a Friday, even though the calendar changes year after year, but never God establishing the days or dates in the beginning with Moses and Aaron with the cycle of the moon's phases. It's like the Lunar Calendar I already posted as this would have been the one God established with the actual dates, but yet showing how those days and dates changed.

They shall keep their lambs until Friday the 14th and kill them in the evening as the lambs were sacrificed (prepared, day of preparation) on the 14th, but the Passover meal was not eaten until the 15th around midnight as God passed over Egypt. On the 14th in the even the lambs were slaughtered and they would have to let the blood drain out and collect it before they roasted them. It takes four to five hours to roast a lamb and since they were to eat this Passover meal around midnight before the Lord Passover this possibly started right before sunset and all finished before midnight being he 15th. This could be a reason why the Jews say the 14th ran into the 15th before midnight.

I can only assume it was right around sunset when they killed their lambs making it the early beginning of Saturday the 15th as this might be considered to be the 14th and 15th. Then they were instructed to spread the blood on the two side post and on the upper door post in preparation for God passing over Egypt (Passover at midnight on Saturday the 15th.

Being this was the Lord's Passover meal eaten with unleavened bread to be prepared and eaten that night with nothing left over before morning as they had to be prepared to flee in haste in the morning which would have made it sunrise on the 16th being a Sunday this was the memorial God said to keep throughout all the generations.

Go back to Matthew 26 beginning with vs. 17 as this is a reference to Exodus 12:6 which says the lamb's were killed in the evening of the 14th. This supper Jesus had with His disciples did not take place on the first night of Passover being the 15th. Jesus was tried, killed and buried before the day of Passover that began after sunset making it Saturday the 15th before Passover began.

In vs. 17-19 now the first day (not on the first day of the feast of unleavened bread) the disciples only asked Jesus where they should prepare the Passover meal. (On the first day you shall have a holy convocation, you shall do no customary work on it, Exodus 13:4-10; Leviticus 23:4-8; Numbers 28:16-25; Deuteronomy 16:1-8.) Jesus told them to go into the city and require of a place to keep the Passover meal as they only made ready the place for the Passover. Jesus told them that His time is at hand as He will keep the Passover at their house, but they did not understand that Jesus would be the Lamb slain before the Passover.

From vs. 20-75 it was only at that evening after they ate and song a hymn that with the disciples did Jesus come to the garden of Gethsemane to pray. Whether before sunset on Wednesday the 12 or right after sunset that would make it Thursday the 13 that Jesus would sit with the disciples in the upper room eating a meal with them, as being the last supper He would have with them, as He explains about His time being at hand and the events that would follow.

Matthew 27:1, 2 it was the morning, which I would think being very early in the morning on the 13th now being a Thursday, Jesus was bound and delivered to Pontius Pilate for sentencing. After being handed over to the very Jews who followed Jesus and heard Him teach they sentenced Him to be crucified. Jesus, by Roman law, was beaten and scourged then carried His cross beam up the half mile hill to Golgotha. At the third hour (3:00pm) he was nailed to the cross and died in the ninth hour (6:00PM) the day of the 13th being a Thursday and laid in the tomb until God raised Him from the tomb sometime around early morning making it Sunday the 16th.

Jesus was three days and three nights, (not a 24 hour period, but sunset to sunrise) in the tomb so He would have not been alive to celebrate the Passover with His disciples on the 15th being a Saturday.

That's pretty close, but lets take a look at this.
You said, Being this was the Lord's Passover meal eaten with unleavened bread to be prepared and eaten that night with nothing left over before morning as they had to be prepared to flee in haste in the morning which would have made it sunrise on the 16th being a Sunday.

Let's forget about assigning days and just work with dates. We're not trying to establish which day of the week he was crucified, but rather the date.

According to the story in Exodus, which you correctly retold, the Passover lamb was slaughtered at twilight on the 14th. The blood was drained and put on the door posts and the meat was roasted and eaten before midnight. The next morning they would be driven out of Egypt.

Twilight marks the end of the day (14) and begins the night of the 15th. Because the lamb had to be eaten "that day" and before midnight, Jews extend the 14th till midnight sharing the night of the 15th.

The next morning would be the morning of the 15th, not the 16th as the 15th doesn't end until after twilight.

Twilight as soon as the sun completely sets would mark the end of day 14 beginning day 15 as days ran from sunset to sunset. Now the Jews might have extended the 14th till midnight, but by God's setting of days being sunset to sunset this would not be right. Why they do this I have not yet found in my studies of this.

I was wrong as the next morning after the night of the Passover would still be the 15th until sunset which would begin the 16th day being the first day of the week.

According to Exodus 12:6, 7 on the 14th the lamb's were killed in the evening and the blood put upon the door posts where they would eat their lamb with unleavened bread. It does not specify whether the evening was before or after sunset when they killed them and spread their blood, but vs. 8 is clear they ate the Passover lamb and unleavened bread in the night after they had roasted them. In the night would be that of the 15th after the sunset on the 14th. I would say the 14th before sunset would have been the day of preparation as it only says in the evening you will kill your lamb's and it would take awhile to bleed them out and at least four or five hours to roast a lamb clear through as they could not eat any raw parts.

This can be a confusing study, but loving every minute of it.
