God is recorded as having instructed Prophet Moses in the Torah, Deuteronomy 12:16, “Only you shall not eat the blood; you shall pour it upon the earth like water,” and in Leviticus 19:26, “You shall not eat any flesh with the blood in it. You shall not practice augury or witchcraft.”

Why did God prohibit the Jews from consuming blood? Is it because blood is toxic or carries disease?

Are there kosher slaughter laws in the OT that were designed to cause the blood to drain? If so, where are these laws located?

Do Christians today follow these laws? If not, do we consume blood in our meat?

Since I eat meat, I guess I'd have to answer yes to your last question. I don't know of any way to effectively remove all blood from meat.

I generally stay away from blood, but I won't get all legalistic about it. I don't care to try blood pudding again.

This is why animals get their throat slit so it drains the blood.
The slaughtering technique is not in the bible as this article explains it was passed down verbally.

The animals blood is said to be evil. Modern science says that blood is a breeding ground for bacteria.

So although our meat is drained of blood the method still falls short of the practices used in Kosher and Halal slaughter.

WIP: I believe animals are slaughtered in most western countries in a way to drain the blood (for example, by cutting the throats rather than by wringing their necks). So I don’t think there is blood in meat in western countries like the US.

But there seems to be specific types of foods that are made with blood, such as black pudding, which is made from pork blood.

Christ the King put a link and wrote, “The slaughtering technique is not in the bible as this article explains it was passed down verbally.” Here is the relevant text from the link that he posted:

“The laws regarding the precise method of slaughter are not stated in the Bible, but were given orally to Moses on Mount Sinai, as indicated in the verse by the statement, “as I have commanded thee,” that is, as I have already instructed you. [The function of this previous sentence is to make a link between rabbinically developed laws regarding implementation of these laws and what is traditionally understood as the revelation—of both oral and written Torah (which can be translated as both “teaching” and “law”)—at Sinai.]”

Do slaughterhouses in the west (US, Canada, Europe, etc.) slit the throats, following these oral laws?
Since we are not theocracies that follow religious laws, why do we do this?
Why don’t we use other techniques to kill the animal that don’t cause the blood to be drained?
Is it because our science deems blood to carry disease?

So do they pump some other fluid through the body to replace all the blood including all capillaries?

Given that one of God's greatest gifts to mankind is the porterhouse steak, I'm opting for not strictly following the Jewish law. Though, I could be a bit prejudiced... :)

They wrote this letter by them:
The apostles, the elders, and the brethren,
To the brethren who are of the Gentiles in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia:
Greetings.
Since we have heard that some who went out from us have troubled you with words, unsettling your souls, saying, “You must be circumcised and keep the law”—to whom we gave no such commandment— it seemed good to us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. We have therefore sent Judas and Silas, who will also report the same things by word of mouth. For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things: that you abstain from things offered to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. Farewell. Acts 15:23-29

In some cultures even today, drinking blood can be a form of worshipping a false idol or attributed to the dark arts. There are many African cultures that drink animal.blood whether it be from elephants, goats, cows, etc. because some believe it gives them strength. Maybe we have heard about modern day vampirism type practices, too. There are many instances of magic and sorcerery being practiced in the old world. This stuff wasn't uncommon, and it hasn't changed that much since.

I am wondering if it was keeping people away from such God despising ideas like witchcraft. It is possible for hygienic reasons since we know many diseases and illness can be passed through blood.

I don't think it is wrong to eat meat. I can't say for sure if you like your steak 100% rare, but most people cook the blood into it/out of it. I am not certain we are still bound by this law, but I don't believe it is right to drink someone else's blood or drink cups of blood from an animal either.

I like mine medium well as to avoid any uncooked blood. Joices run clear is what I aim for to stay this side of obedience.

By Christians do you mean the West or do you mean a particular Christian group like the J Ws?

If you have ever bought a piece of beef you will have seen that blood is in the meat.
The slaughter rules in both the US and in the UK require that animals be stunned prior to being killed. It is an attempt to make the killing of them as painless and stres free as possible.
While drinking the blood improves the keeping quality of the meat all the blood is not drain away.

If you eat meat, no matter how it is slaughtered you will be eating meat with some good in it.
Are Christians required to refrain from eating blood? No. Ritual and ceremonies play no part in our salvation.

Hospes:

I don’t see the link between “God's greatest gifts to mankind [being] the porterhouse steak” and the OT law to not consume blood. If the cow is slaughtered in a way that drains the blood, you can consume a porterhouse steak without violating the OT prohibition on consuming blood. If, in contrast, the cow is strangled or otherwise killed in a way that does not drain the blood, then the porterhouse steak (and other cuts) would be prohibited.

Luminous_Rose:

I do not know what you mean by “cook the blood into it/out of it.” In most western countries, including the US, animals are slaughtered in a way that drains the blood from the meat before it reaches you. See this article https://www.huffpost.com/entry/what-is-the-blood-in-steak_n_57fc0219e4b0e655eab6eb36:

“As it turns out, that “blood” in your steak isn’t blood at all.
“It’s myoglobin, the protein that delivers oxygen to an animal’s muscles. This protein turns red when meat is cut, or exposed to air. Heating the protein turns it a darker color. Rare meat isn’t “bloody,” it is just cooked to a lower temperature.”

Who Me:

You wrote, “If you have ever bought a piece of beef you will have seen that blood is in the meat.” Please see my comment to Luminous_Rose above. What you see in your meat is not blood. It is myoglobin.

“If you eat meat, no matter how it is slaughtered you will be eating meat with some good in it.”

I don’t know what you mean by “some good in it.” If you mean blood, then I disagree.

Slaughterhouses in the United States drain blood by hanging animals upside-down and then slitting their throats to allow all of the blood to drain. The process begins with stunning the animal to make the slaughter as painless as possible and then suspending it by a hind limb. They are then typically bled by the insertion of a knife into the thoracic cavity and severance of the carotid artery and jugular vein to allow for the maximum amount of blood removal from the body.

You wrote, “Are Christians required to refrain from eating blood? No. Ritual and ceremonies play no part in our salvation.”

This contradicts Acts 15:20, which requires abstaining “from things polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from things strangled, and from blood.”

JLB:

I am extraordinarily confused. I previously understood that Christians are no longer bound by the Old Testament law. Jesus declared that He was the fulfillment of the law: “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill” (Mat 5:17). He was sent by God to fulfill the law by acting as a sacrifice to atone for sin once and for all. In this light, the Apostle Paul wrote that “when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death. But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter” (Rom 7:5-6). Deliverance from the law was achieved by Jesus, who saved us from the bondage of the law, which “was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor” (Gal 3:24-25). I therefore understood that Christians were released from the Old Testament law.

However, Acts 15:28-29 appears to contradict this. It states “it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things: that you abstain from things offered to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well.”

It therefore imposes a set of requirements on Christians and prohibits:
  • things offered to idols;
  • blood;
  • things strangled; and
  • sexual immorality.
So it seems we are freed from the law, except for these four specific laws (things offered to idols, blood, things strangled and sexual immorality, according to the list provided by Luke in Acts.

However, the list of prohibitions provided by Paul in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 is longer:

Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.

The list of prohibitions provided by Paul in Gal 5:19-21 is still longer:

Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

I'm not sure how to reconcile this.

New International Version
Leviticus 17:11
For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one's life.

Bonus verse...
Deuteronomy 14:21 b
Do not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.

Jesus declared that He was the fulfillment of the law: “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill” (Mat 5:17). He was sent by God to fulfill the law by acting as a sacrifice to atone for sin once and for all.
Hi JMT,
While Christ was our atonement, many misunderstand Matthew 5:17.

Matthew 5:17 does not stand alone. It is part of a bigger narrative that spans the teachings of Jesus from chapter 5 thru chapter 7.

There is much evidence to support that the gospel of Matthew was originally written in Aramaic and later translated into Kione Greek. This reinforced that the Gospel of Matthew was written to Jewish Christians who understood Jewish teachings and traditions.

I bring this up because what a Jewish ear would have heard is this.

I will give you the proper explanation of the law and how to live it out.

You see, the idea of the law wasn't theological nor intellectual in and of itself because the law had to be put in action and lived out.

If one interprets the law incorrectly, they will live the law out incorrectly thus missing the intent of that law, or better put, if one grossly misinterpreted the law, it would cause them to live that command out in a way that actually abolished that law.

To full fill the law means not only properly interpreting a law, but also properly living out that law.

What I say is supported by Jesus own words as he says, "You have heard it said, but I say ..." And then Jesus proceeds to properly interpret the law and give proper instructions on how to live it out.

Jesus properly lived out the law perfectly and in Jesus there was no sin. Had Jesus sinned, he would not be our atonement.

My point is this. We can't just jump to the atonement and assign Matthew 5:17 as the main teaching for the atonement. To do so has the potential to abolish what Jesus taught thru chapter 7.

I thoroughly wash meat and am ambivelent about blood transfusions as I'm alive because while unconscious after a bad crash many years ago I was given some blood.
However I do think that a better alternative to blood is group prayer by Christians.
Latest research is that at conception the first sperm to piece the egg gives off a tiny spark - of life.
As for Christians being free to eat blood I'm inclined to say 'no don't' as it's no hardship or loss to desist.

No specific procedures are found in the bible.

Of course ALL Meat products have a certain about of blood resident in them, Kosher processed products have less, but you can't get it all out.

Not anything I'll personally worry about, but I do avoid foods that are purposely MADE FROM BLOOD for concience's sake. In General, If you can't do it In FAITH (Heb 11:1) - it's SIN for you (Rom 14:23)

its talking about raw bloody meat some like steak medium well other barely cooked life of the flesh New American Standard Version puts it, “you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.”

The Council of Jerusalem makes very clear that Christians remain under the Old Testament prohibition on consuming blood:

Acts 15:28 For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things:
Acts 15:29 that you abstain from things offered to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. Farewell.

Christians therefore should not feel at liberty to consume products with blood in them. If they do not know how their meat is being slaughtered, they should only consume meat if it has been slaughtered in conformity with kosher or halal practices to ensure the blood has been drained. Otherwise, Christians should refrain from consuming meat.

All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify. Let no one seek his own, but each one the other’s well-being.
Eat whatever is sold in the meat market, asking no questions for conscience’ sake; for “the earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness.”
If any of those who do not believe invites you to dinner, and you desire to go, eat whatever is set before you, asking no question for conscience’ sake. But if anyone says to you, “This was offered to idols,” do not eat it for the sake of the one who told you, and for conscience’ sake; for “the earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness.” “Conscience,” I say, not your own, but that of the other. For why is my liberty judged by another man’s conscience? But if I partake with thanks, why am I evil spoken of for the food over which I give thanks?
Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. Give no offense, either to the Jews or to the Greeks or to the church of God, just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved. 1 Corinthians 10:23-33

If we are invited to a persons house for dinner and they set before you a beautiful steak or prime rib, do you think it’s somehow ok to question them about where the food came from or how it was prepared?

Its sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

How is a nice pork shoulder or rack of pork ribs going to be prepared Kosher?
