I was looking for a category to put this question, and I think since this is all about business and making money it's perfect. Right now, the closest thing I have to a job is writing stories, and I don't get paid a cent for that. In fact, since I am mentally disabled, it is very hard for me to find a job right now and I just don't have the transportation for it since I don't drive right now, I can't have somebody to take me there, and I can't take a bus. It's funny because I always heard the phrase that money doesn't buy happiness but yet a lot of the time a woman marries a man for how much money he has or visa versa. Personally, I think that's rather sad. Marrying somebody for their money is like coming to Jesus because He is loaded with tons of gold and riches. I might not have a job, and I might not have a lot of money, but I do have something that money can't buy,..my faith. That isn't to say that it hasn't been tested at times, but God is the type of boss that if I mess up and make a mistake, He's not going to fire me. The fact that I'm coming to know Him and trust Him and Jesus more, I know that He's going to forgive me. In fact He's doing the exact opposite than to fire me. He's promoting me to Heaven because that's exactly what He said He would do. I said this already many times before, I screwed up so many times in this life that I lost track of it, but the fact that I'm going to go to Heaven anyway even though clearly I don't deserve it is proof that even if I don't ever get a job in my life, I am already serving the most wonderful boss in the universe. So to me, money definitely does not buy happiness. The love that I have for my fiancee, all my family and friends, and most importantly my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is completely priceless, and that's something that money can't buy.

ok, I am not the one to really dole out advise on this. I know some of this from my wife's disability and how she hated and still hates that I must work more to keep the ship going. of course money cant buy it all, but a decent wage does make life a bit more enjoyful as one can go do things that one wants that may cost a lot. I'm not talking about doing something to keep up with the jones' but the trips, places to see. I would love to go photo a lot places and also sell what I can. I have been told I can make money at it. yet selling my product is what I need to do and also finding a niche that people will buy. as there is so much competition here

ok...its like this...

Somewhere in The Bible, it says to pray for neither poverty nor riches. I think that's a good idea. I've never been truly poor, because I've always had my (loving, long suffering, kind, generous) parents behind me, but...

people made it a point to treat me the way they treat poor women 'round here (its The South). Not fun. Lack of stuff isn't fun, either, but I found oppression, cruelty, being "kept in line" far worse than lack of material goods (again, I never went hungry or homeless, so this is just my -very- limited perspective).

Now, I live with my parents, and we've reconciled. They have higher status, somewhat more resources. They're at the end point of being "upwardly mobile," I guess. Anyway...

now, I do enjoy living here, being comfortable and safe, etc., but again: a lot of it--for me--isn't about stuff, its about -space-. Its about not being treated with unrelenting cruelty, oppressed, kept in bondage, publicly humiliated, etc. As is now, I"m barely tolerated. "Schizophrenic, his people take care of him," "he'll never become a man," etc....

but -this- is several big steps up from where I was, before Jesus saved (is saving, I pray will save...) me.

And...being on disability, after having to depend directly on my parents...makes me see: everything.costs.money. My "psychiatric treatment," even now, at a public/community mental health clinic, costs money. The prescriptions (generic) cost money. My car cost money, my gas costs money, my shoes cost money. And...

I -am- thankful, first and foremost to Christ, secondly to my parents, and then to society as a whole for providing something of a safety net for those of us who really cannot keep up in the rat race.

OK. So...can money buy happiness? I doubt it. I think it was in a Sociology class, we were talking about suicide rates...they go up at both extremes of social status. Poverty= more suicide. Rich=more suicides, too. True story, but I forget the reasoning behind it..something about both ends being less in the mainstream of society, more social disintegration or...something. I -do- think..."we live in a material world," and life is easier with at least some resources, but its not -just- about the cold hard cash...its about status, how well integrated someone is into the community, social connections (or loneliness), on and on it goes.

Jesus was poor. I try to remember that, personally. Hardworking, but poor. Wasn't spectacularly handsome, either. Died by crucifixion, which...if I remember correctly...was a method of execution mostly reserved for the lowest rung of criminals, and it was highly stigmatized. So...

your faith is the BIG thing...or I should say, "Keep your eyes fixed on Christ, and Him Crucified." :)

No, money does not buy happiness. But it is a foolish person who thinks it doesn't think it give space for a peaceful mind to flourish.

I obviously agree with the first part so I gave you a like, not quite sure what the second part of your statement means though.

Less concern over health issues. Currently I could post a laundry list of money for my wife's health issues I must come up with.two surgeries, one shoulder replacement,aND the the other I won't post but relate to the back pain she has.
Working so much to make it.I'm not saying spending money isn't going to cause problems too.it can

Does money really buy happiness?
Ask a homeless person if they're happy. Seriously, go forth and make it a project. But bring a dollar for every person you think you'll encounter, at least a dollar, so that you can give them that charity after you ask them that question. Be ready for some very serious answers though. Some, not so polite.
I did this years ago so that I could arrive at this thread years later. I know that now. Before it was a compulsion because I tired of preps I'd see around campus repeating that nonsense mantra. "Money doesn't buy happiness!" Meanwhile, they were there on their parents dime and they didn't care about their classes. They cared about the party that college was suppose to be.

YES! Money buys happiness. Those that say, money doesn't buy happiness, never had any.

Things bring temporary happiness, if you base your happiness, joy in a home it will not be a long one. Society teaches the more stuff you have the better you.will be.

That's a lie, plenty of rich people are drug addicts in those mega homes. Im.not suggesting one cant be rich but be warned it has snares. I see plenty of rich homes.a club where 500 dollar plates are served is one I go to for work as its on the utility grid Im with.

The rat race can make one miserable ,balence is the key.

I think we are shown multiple examples in the Bible where God blessed countless people with great wealth. Do you suppose God was saying "I am doing wrong in this. Having money like I have given to all these people is definitely not the way I want any of your to live." I think He certainly was not.

No, and that's true, but that wasn't the point of my OP. The point is that there is a lot of other important things out there besides money. If somebody offered me a million dollars to denounce my faith in Christ there's absolutely no way that I would take it. Jesus makes my life worth living. :biggrin

Yes. Money buys happiness.
It doesn't buy joy.
Only God can give us joy.

The only persons who say money doesn't buy happiness are the ones that have it.
Money does a lot for a person:
It buys food
It buys an education
It buys medicine
It buys doctor's visits
It allows one to travel and see the world
It allows one to have transportation -- a car
If one gets sick, he's better off with money than without it.

Yeah. I'd say it does buy happiness.
Or, at least, it doesn't contribute to unhappiness.

I have to say that you really did make an excellent point.:)

Yes, but it is YOU who is doing the choosing here. That same million is offered to people every day who choose to do good with it.

I saw someone say they couldn't really talk about this. I can. I have had nothing... NOTHING. No car, no home, one pair of shoes. Today, because I have not only been blessed, but I have also learned how to handle money, I am in a position where my wife can, and do, give hundreds (and sometimes much more) away all the time.

Many of us claim to "hate sin, but love the sinner." Well, you can love to do good with money (and, trust me, He will give you even more) while hating the fact that some people do stash money under their mattresses. It is plain foolishness to say you hate money because some people worship it.

God said to feed the poor. How can you feed the poor if all you have at the end of your paycheck each week is $14?

Really, wow? I'm so sorry brother Willie. :hug That has to be tough. Your have been added to my prayers.

That was then. I have plenty now. And I can give out $50 gas cards, pay electric bills, pay people's auto repair bills, and even send people to school. Why? Because. with God's help, I learned how to make money work for me.

Oh I'm sorry, I misread that.
