Topic: How do I love God?

By H.U.Wenger

Introduction:

Most of the time we do know, how to love our spouses, our kids and even the people around us, especially those, we like. We know, how we can give them joy and appreciation. But how can I love God as I am supposed to?

Highlights:

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (Matthew 22: 36 – 40)

We cannot see the Father and his Son with our physical eyes. We cannot have a dialog with them the same way we can communicate with the people around us and many do therefore not believe that we can love God wholeheartedly, with all our emotions and with our thinking. This attitude is, however, just a mistake of how many of us look at God and at the world. Because so many injustices and crimes happen among men, we think that God is rather distant and largely indifferent to all that happens among people. This is fundamentally wrong. Whenever we consider how God loves us as human beings, we will be flabbergasted with what he has done and is doing for us. We will be overwhelmed by his love and by how his mind is set to save everybody, who calls upon him. He became one of us to learn firsthand about all our afflictions and troubles. He remained victorious in all of it and paid all our iniquities and sins with his flesh and blood on the cross of Calvary. When he died there, he did it for you and for me. Whoever calls upon his name and is willing to learn from him shall be saved for eternity. In him our death is undone and life eternal is offered and freely given. In considering these facts, our love to him will grow and be deepened every time we bring our mind to recall the facts. Jesus told us: “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him and we will come to him and make our home with him.” (John 14, 23) It is his love that is fundamental not our love! “This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. We love because he first loved us.” (1. John 4, 9.19)

Another chance to love God, is to love the people he gave around us regardless how much we like or dislike them. This is often not as easy as it sounds, but whenever it is done, it is victorious.

A Christian Chinese Rice farmer had his rice field on the top of a mountain. Right beneath him a ruthless neighbor had his field. Every day, our farmer pumped his field on the top of the hill, full with water. When he was done, his neighbor went and made a hole into the separating wall and so all the water flowed down to his field. One day our Christian farmer could not take it anymore and he went to the pastor for counsel. The pastor had much understanding for the farmers frustration, but he told him that tomorrow, he should pump first the neighbors field full and then his own. The farmer did not like the counsel much, but lead by the spirit he promised to do it. After two more days had passed, the ruthless neighbor visited the pastor, telling him that he could not take it anymore and that he wants the same strength and power like his Christian neighbor.

Prayer: Dear God, help me to understand your love to me more deeply, so that I can love you wholeheartedly with all my soul and mind and my neighbor as myself. Help me to win the people around me for you with the depth of your love. Amen

We desperately need to be filled with the Spirit in order to truly love Him as He deserves to be loved and honored.

God bless you.

I want to point out in the question to Jesus the words "in the Law" - I a moment I am going to show you that the foremost command is not in the Law!! It is the command that makes it possible to fulfill the Law, and also the command for the question you ask!!!

You asked an interesting question in the OP:

Most of the time we do know, how to love our spouses, our kids and even the people around us, especially those, we like. We know, how we can give them joy and appreciation. But how can I love God as I am supposed to?

The real fact is that most of the time I do not know how to love my spouse, kids, or even the people around me. I can try and perhaps they will appreciate my efforts, but to truly know the best way to love them is not something I know! Truly only God knows the right way to love then in all circumstances!! So now we get to the foremost command, which is the the greatest commandment in the Law!!

Mark 12:29 One of the scribes came and heard them arguing, and recognizing that He had answered them well, asked Him, “What commandment is the foremost of all?” Jesus answered, “The foremost is, ‘HEAR, O ISRAEL! THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE LORD; AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.’

Now look close at the above!! "HEAR, O ISRAEL" is the only commandment mentioned above!! "THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE LORD" is a statement of fact and not a command. It is the thing you find out when you keep the commandment "HEAR, O ISRAEL". The next part "AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART" is not a commandment either, it is a conclusion!! It is the what happens when you start listening to the Lord your God. Therefore the answer to "What commandment is the foremost of all" is "HEAR, O ISRAEL.", because that keeping that commandment is what enables us to fulfill the greatest commandment in the Law "You shall love the Lord your God!

So we go back to the question you asked "But how can I love God as I am supposed to?

The answer is keeping the foremost command, "Hear, O Israel!" If you listen to Him you will get to love Him. It is also how to go about loving your wife, kids, and other around you!! You see, God is love, not you. So if you want to know how to love those around you properly, you need to listen to the Lord for advice and instruction.

Now I don't listen to Him as much as I should. Usually I only listen t Him about a dozen different times during the day. Because of that I often wind up saying things to my wife that get me in a bit of trouble. I usually try to get myself out of trouble myself, but that doesn't always work. Finally I will get smart and remember I need His help, and wind up seek Him and His voice to get me out of trouble. That works!! I don't know what He is gong to say, but whatever it is, it works. Sometimes He tells me to shut up an go into the other room and He will take care of the problem. Sometimes He will have me say something, weird. Like one time she was getting upset with me and we were arguing in the car, when I remember to turn to Him. He told me to say she was like the snow on the mountains, which we were driving by. She want to rip me for saying that, but she couldn't figure out what it meant, so she sat there a bit confused for a moment before asking me why I had said that. I told her that I had asked the Lord and He told me to say it. That got her laughing.

Frankly, He gets me out of so much trouble I am embarrassed to tell how much. He also tells me to do things for her that keep me out of trouble and helps keep my marriage great before things happen. Like the other day He had me walk over to the donut shop to surprise her with a ham and cheese croissant when she woke up. It was just a little thing, but those little surprises He comes up with really help our marriage. So the way to love your neighbor as yourself is also to "Hear, O Israel"!

In fact, look at what happens around the verse you quoted in Matthew! First, the question was asked to try and put Jesus to the test. The Pharisees were trying to caught Him in His knowledge of the Law, because they were trying to live by the Law instead of seeking Him and listening to Him as Lord. So He answered their question correctly, and then caught them in a question about David and his hearing.

He *said to them, “Then how does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying,
‘THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD,
“SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,
UNTIL I PUT YOUR ENEMIES BENEATH YOUR FEET”’?

The fact was that they were not hearing, like the commandment "Hear, O Israel", and so they failed that answer and it shut them up. They fail the test because they didn't hadn't keep the commandment "Hear, O Israel".

Deut 6:4-9 “Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one! “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. “These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart.
“You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. “You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Again - "Hear, O Israel!" are the words that are the commandment above. 'The Lord is our God', and 'the Lord is one' are comments and not commandments. "You shall" means that if you "Hear" you shall love the Lord your God..."

You also see that command come from the Lord thru Isaiah:

Is 1:2 Listen, O heavens, and hear, O earth; For the LORD speaks,

And also the command the Father said from the mountain:

Mat 17:5 ... “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!”

If we would just understand that command and keep it everyday, we would love God and others, because His love would come through us!
