We need to practice righteousness
to be righteous in God’s eyes

● “Little children, let no one deceive you.
He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as
He is righteous. He who sins (habitually) is of the devil …
In this the children of God and the children of the devil
are manifest: Whoever does NOT practice righteousness
is NOT of God, NOR is he who does NOT love his brothers and sisters.” (1 John 3:7-10)

Note above: the children of God practice righteousness
and love their fellow BACs!

● “… whoever fears Him and works righteousness
is accepted by Him.” (Acts 10:35)

● “… you know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him” (1 John 2:29)

However, do all BACs (who are born of God)
practice righteousness?

In post #2, you will find 7 more NT verses
about practicing righteousness.

Some of the godly things we must do
to be practicing righteousness

● We must be doing God’s will
Those who do Father God’s will shall enter
the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 7:21).

Quite a lot of God’s will is listed below …

● We must be loving
We must love God and our fellow man
(Matthew 22:37-40, 1 John 3:10).
We must love our enemies (Matthew 5:43-46).
If we love Jesus, we will obey His commandments
(John 14:15,21,23).
Does anyone get into heaven who does not love Jesus?

We must be merciful
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy
(Matthew 5:7).

We must be generous and do good works/deeds
If we feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty,
take in strangers, clothe the naked, visit the sick,
visit the prisoners, we will go into eternal life
(Matthew 25:34-46).

We must be forgiving
If we do not forgive people, Father God will not forgive us (Matthew 6:14-15).

We must be repenting of our sins
Paul sent a strong letter (1 Corinthians) to the Corinthian church concerning a terrible sexual sin, and this letter
produced the desired result in the church. This whole passage was written to, about, and for … the Corinthian believers:
“godly sorrow (over sin) produces repentance
leading to salvation” (2 Corinthians 7:10)

● “… we, having died to sins, should live for righteousness” (1 Peter 2:24)
This refers to wanting to live for the practicing of righteousness!

● “… flee these things (sins) and pursue righteousness and a godly life” (1 Timothy 6:11)

● “… you can choose to obey God, leading to righteous living” (Romans 6:16)

● “… give yourselves to be slaves of righteous living so you will become holy” (Romans 6:19)

● “All Scripture … is profitable … for instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16)

This refers to instruction in how to practice righteousness!

● “The wrath of God is revealed from heaven
against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men
who suppress the truth (by living) in unrighteousness” (Romans 1:18)

● “… to the blameless I will show My salvation”
(Psalm 50:23, NIV)

I do think there's something to be said for the conscious development of Christian character. That's one thing I -love- about the RCC...for instance, for each of the "7 Deadly Sins," they have traditional recommendations to counter said sin. true story. and yet...

I read JohnDB's post, and I think back to some of the material iLove has posted, and...yeah. I don't know, honestly. "draw nigh unto me and I shall draw nigh unto you." Even without magisterium-approved character development techniques, God knows when one is looking to do the right thing, the godly thing...and I believe He honors that, and since He is omnipotent, omniscient, omnibenevolent...

"He causes all things to come together for the good of those who are called." The Christian life is kind of one big character building exercise, in a sense (?). :)

So, you reject the verses in the OP?
How in the world did you get there from what I posted? I never suggested anything of the sort. I was adding a central theme of the book of Hebrews.
Do you think God is honoring this type of thinking/teaching?
I would think so considering it is scripture and a central theme to Hebrews. Paul also is famous for saying that it is by grace we are saved through faith so that no one can boast.

What on Earth are you suggesting that I am saying?

We are made righteous by the righteousness of God. To be righteous is to be right with God as being obedient to all His commands. If we are right with God then we will bear good fruits to reflect His righteousness found in us.

John 15:1-5; Galatians 5:22-26

Senior,

How would you define 'righteousness', dikaiosune in 1 John 3:7?

Oz

We need to 'practise' being rightous, simple because we cannot easily be rightous.

The real truth in this is that we are saved by Gods gift of grace and we stay saved by Gods ongoing grace in our lives.

We cannot earn Gods love, we can only try to please him/honour him by how we live.

Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness. Faith in Jesus. That's what is needed.
To start with. After that, as the OP says, we must practice righteousness. The first is not a substitute for the second.
