I know that how many times something in scripture is repeated is important (to God!) that we learn it...

So this question is along those lines...I think I read somewhere before (and mentioned here) that there are between 5 and 6 thousand promises to us in scripture, and that is very cool, and encouraging to me. But in the NT I was reading...and it occured to me, wow there sure is a lot of warnings to us in scripture! I tried to Google how many warnings are in the Word, but I couldn't find an answer. Possibly poor search terms? But anyway, how many warnings are there in scripture? Does anyone know? It seems as if the NT is more warnings than promises or positive/encouraging passages/verses.

I dunno if this is a study or not, so put it here. If you Moderators feel it fits better in a different forum, then move it and no sweat there, Brothers!

That's true! But how about Revelations? That book is thick with warnings! A very few positive verses in it...

Actually and coincidentally, we just finished a study of Revelation last night in our men's group. I've always thought of Revelation as a book of warnings and doom and gloom but now, after our study, I've learned that for us believers, Revelation is a book of incredible hope and promise. The bottom-line message from Revelation is, "Do not fear! God will make all things new."

Would this thread be best served in the Bible Study forum or Christian Talk & Advice forum?

I've thought for awhile now that all of the verses through scripture that say do not fear is actually a commandment for us, and Revelation 21:8 seems to confirm this notion! The fearful will inherit the lake of fire. Now that is kind of a scary thought! But. He didn't give us a spirit of fear...I don't think I can honestly say that I am totally fearless but there isn't a whole lot that of things that I fear, I mostly just wondered how many warnings are in there. There does seem to be a lot.

God has given various types of warnings and promises, but yet only one warning that is read throughout the scriptures of what happens if we reject God and all His commands.

Every warning brings with it either blessings or cursing like that of Deuteronomy Chapters 27 and 28. When we read the conjunction words like "and, if, but" these are that of the choices we make that either brings God's curses upon us or His blessings upon us as each one of us are accountable before the Lord in final judgment.

Like WIP said, Revelations is full of our hopes and promises, but all of scripture from Genesis to Revelations is our hopes and promises of God to all who are obedient to His commands with unwavering faith.

What is there to fear for a believer? I searched the NKJV for the phrase, "Do not be afraid" and, "Fear not" and found 59 references. Here are a few.

When Abram received a vision from God. The word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward." Genesis 15:1 (NKJV)

And again in Isaiah 43:1 But now, thus says the Lord, who created you, O Jacob, And He who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine." (NKJV)

God's message to Israel through the prophet, Isaiah 41:10 "Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand."

When the angel appeared to Zacharias to inform him of John's pending birth. The angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John." Luke 1:13 NKJV

When the angel appeared to Mary to give her the news of her bearing the Messiah. Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God." Luke 1:30 NKJV

When the angel appeared to the shepherds in the field. Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people." Luke 2:10 NKJV

When Jesus spoke to John in Revelation 1:17 (NKJV) But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last."

Romans 8:31 NKJV If God is for us, who can be against us?

Do not be afraid, do not worry, and to trust God could all be comandnents, but isn't there also the teaching to fear God.

"The start of Wisdom is to fear God" and "don't fear men who can only destroy the body, but fear God who can destroy the body and the soul,"

Then there is the Awesome thought, that with Jesus we can cone boldly to the thrown of God, and call Him Father. God has always been about reconciliation and coming to Him throughout the bible. But do has it been to tread carefully when approaching Him, least our sins and failings kill us.

I don't know, in the talk of fear not as a command, all I have to add is, Thank God for Jesus.

To fear God means to respect God in all His power and might.
