A deranged [Daily Mail's opinion showing up in a news story, apparently] Detroit man stole his recently deceased 93-year-old father's body from the cemetery with the hopes of resurrecting the man through prayer, it was revealed today.

The body of Clarence Bright was found today stuffed inside a new freezer in his 48-year-old son's basement.

Mr Bright was taken in his casket from a mausoleum at Gethsemane Cemetery Monday morning. Witnesses reported seeing a white van pull up shortly before Mr Bright's body was removed.
Doesn't this give the church a bad name? How many people will think we all are going to go out and dig up our kinfolk and take them home, prop them up in the basement and pray for their resurrection?

It is rational if he was taught that his whole life and if he truly believed it to be real.

That is the problem with taking things too literally. While it may seem bizarre many people do really bizarre things in the name of faith. We must take care in how we present the word of God to the mentally and emotionally unstable. It is why I don't think it is wise for people to tell children that genesis and revelation is literal. If those things are rational and literal than what this man did is rational.

I would surmise the son was so overcome by grief and was seriously not in his right mind.

Grief can make people do strange things.

Re: How many think this is rational beahvior? And what does it do to the Christian bo

Those of us who have passed through grief know that either one gets over it, by one means or another (ideally, through the comfort of the Lord in enabling one to look forward in certain hope), or else it can have a mind-bending effect, because of the sense of the loss of someone who has always been 'there' and part of one's life.

In this case, there is a lot of scope for the person concerned being treated with gentleness and understanding, if with a reminder that there are legally binding procedures which should not be flouted.

Re: How many think this is rational beahvior? And what does it do to the Christian bo

That's so sad. His grief must be overwhelming. :sad

Why is it sad? Either God performs miracles in the world or does not. Those miracles are either based on faith or they are not. Why is his faith in a miracle in this instance sad? Why is his literal belief ridiculous, but telling a child that the world is 6,000 years old and the tower of Babble is real and archeology and geology are lies rational? This story is truly where the ones true beliefs shine through.

Geesh..your just being contrary. This body would have been embalmed.
The man needs help to work through his grief and understanding.

Why does being embalmed matter? Seems he had enough faith to go to some really extreme measures. In that context he was rational. That is my point. We can't teach the irrational to children, and then expect them to grow up being rational. If his expecting a miracle was irrational than anyone expecting a miracle is irrational. We can't point to him and say how silly and sad then in the next thread say if one doesn't believe that the story of Noah literal and true one doesn't have Jesus in their heart. It is these contradictory messages that confuse and beguile.

We as rational adults know that what he did was not truth or rational, and using our same sense of rationality and discernment we can in turn know that teaching genesis and revelation as literal history is also irrational.

Keep this thread on topic.

Re: How many think this is rational beahvior? And what does it do to the Christian bo

Anyway, in the OP this poor guy was obviously so grieved by His bereavement that it affected his state of mind, and he behaved irrationally. The fact that one person did this, is no reflection on Christians more widely who pray and trust the Lord.

Re: How many think this is rational beahvior? And what does it do to the Christian bo

My father passed away suddenly at the age of 50. I miss him even now (22+ years later). But I rejoice that he knew Jesus as his savior and is in heaven today. I wouldn't want to pray him back, he really is in a much better place.

For heaven to be such a great place we sure spend a lot of time in prayer to keep people from going there.

As for the Bible, once I get past the first few words "In the beginning God", the rest is easy for me to believe. Six days, flood, talking donkey, and the cross, the whole nine yards, no problem.
It is either God's Word or it is not, I don't have the permission to pick and choose.

1 Corinthians 1:27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

Re: How many think this is rational beahvior? And what does it do to the Christian bo

Since we know nothing of this man other than the act of digging up his father all we can see is that he might have thought himself rational to believe that as Jesus brought Lazarus out from the grave that even his own father could be brought back to life, but knew he had to keep him cold so he would not rot as fast. Was it grief or was it great faith. That's between him and God only to know unless he explains why he did this.

Re: How many think this is rational beahvior? And what does it do to the Christian bo

What is missing in this article is a comment from someone in a leadership capacity in a church stating that this individual was not acting in accordance with church doctrine. The media tends to just skip over that part.

I know what you mean. Yet if some of the media's beloved interest groups thought there was any implied criticism of themselves, they would vehemently resent the sort of treatment that they themselves sometimes mete out to Christians indiscriminately.

It's time Christians stopped dignifying the media with the attention it so often doesn't deserve.
