Hi all!
As a newcomer to Christianity, can anybody tell me if there is a right or wrong way to read the Bible?
Should i just start at the the beginning of the Old Testament and read all the way through, or can i start at the New Testament, or could i read snippets as i find them?
What has everybody else done?
Is there a right or wrong way to read the Bible?

Hi Mark,

I just started reading the bible 3 years ago and was taught to read Acts first. It really gave me a good start but was also told not to read it like a book, to start from the beginning and read all the way through. Eventually, you will combine the OT and the NT and see how Jesus came to fulfill the law. Just my suggestion as that is how I started and haven't stopped!

To build on what BornAgain said, you should always pray before reading the bible so that God, via the Holy Spirit, will illuminate what He wants to impart to you every time you open it.

Very good advice...I forgot to mention that which is a great way to begin.

Mark

I tried to read from beginning to end on several occasions, but came to grief in the Law of Moses on both occasions, I think.

Looking back at it, I think its a great idea to start at Matthew 1 or any of the gospels chapter 1, and follow up the marginal references diligently. If you can get your hands on a copy of the Interlinear Bible from Amazon, you will find there the most excellent marginal references on the planet.

That way you will get a very broad and wide education and learn how magically the Bible knots itself together into amazing patterns.

Don't worry too much about how much you read, or how long it takes. Bit by bit you will profit greatly.

Remember, you can read a mile wide and an inch deep, or an inch wide and a mile deep.

I prefer the second way, and have benefitted so greatly from doing so I can't begin to tell you how much good it has done me.

All the very best.

Mark, I highly recommend you get on a structured reading program to really learn the major points of all 66 books in scripture.

I spent the first three years as a believer floating around the bible with no real direction and learning a minimum amount.

I really started spiritual growth when I began a one year reading program in a good study bible. I started with the Quest Study Bible. I read 2 OT chapters (start in Genesis) and 1 NT chapter (start in Matthew) each day along with the notes. Learning the proper historical and cultural context of the scripture pays huge dividends in understanding.

I hope this advice helps. Check out some of the study bibles and get on a reading program!

Mark, excellent advice from all previous posters. I only have one thing to add. Approach it with the awe and wonder of a child NOT as an adult who has experienced life. As Knotical said pray before reading to let God show you what's important that day, then take a moment or two of medititation to clear adult preconceptions from your mind.
This really helped me accept and importantly, understand the Truth of His word.

It is very difficult to read it like a regular book, from beginning to end. My gentleman and I are doing this (based on a challenge from the pastor) but without us both doing it and keeping tabs on each other, I certainly would have stopped reading a long time ago. Some of the politics with the big long names can be right confusing LOL and a wee bit dry to read.

No matter how you do this, I do recommend a "study partner". Someone to help you (and you help him/her) to keep on track. And to discuss things with. :)

So do I. Very good advice and Paul's advice is excellent too. Didn't Peter say that we should desire the milk of God's Word as a baby yearns for milk? ;)

There are good sites for basic Bible studies too. That's how I started my Bible studies and my hunger for the Word grew stronger. May the Lord bless all those Bible teachers who shared and keep sharing their sound knowledge of the Bible.

Regarding the pronunciation issue, I actually resolved that with the audio Bible, but there are good sites to help us out.

Thank-You for all your great advice everyone!
I'm looking into study sites now and some of them seem great!

I noticed that "Satan666" had a post deleted by Knotical for being "Inflammatory"!
Does anyone know what they said?
"Satan666" has only posted once and has had it deleted!!
That doesn't bode well!!

MarkG:

It was probably to do with the screen name, which if people really are seeking to follow the Bible, might have been found very distracting rather than constructive.

The same person had another similar account, but was only here to troll, so both of the accounts were deleted. Thankfully, I was able to delete their post in this thread before anyone really noticed it.

Ok, thanks Knotical!
Great work too!:thumbsup
