Recovery is not possible without humility . . .

The ego is the part of the mind that believes we are better than others. That we are always right. That other people's opinions do not matter. That God does not exist. In other words, much like Satan our ego lies to us.

Far superior to the ego is humility. With humility we are one of many. We know our true place. We know God is perfect and we are imperfect. We know that other people's opinions count. We know to be first we must be last.

How to we find humility? Some people are born with it, but most people to develop it after a fall. Everything in their life falls apart. And they ask God for help. In this moment of dependence, they surrender and repent. They are finally humble before an all-powerful God. This changes their lives forever.

As time goes by, you have to work hard to keep humility because the world still promotes egocentric ideas. But if we maintain our humility our life will go smoothly. If we don't, our lives will fall apart again and we have to start all over.

Humility is not the complete lack of ego. We need a sense of self to be creative and do God's work. Our ego is the engine that drives the car. But God must be the driver at all times because he is the only one who knows where we are going. He has the map.

To achieve humility:

1. See God as a higher power and you as a lesser power doing his bidding.

2. Stand on equal footing with others but be willing to be last in line sometimes.

3. Love your neighbor rather than compete with him.

4. Accept God's will at all times.

5. Remember the things for which you have been forgiven.

6. Always give credit to God for your recovery.

7. Put God's will ahead of all else.

8. Pray that you stay humble.

Other peoples opinions don't count. At least to me, if we rely on peoples opinions, then we will not be able to stand on our own two feet, emotionally.

Sometimes God likes us to be arrogant. Just occasionally. To break up the boredom. I don't think God loves too much predictability.

If other people's opinions don't count I guess you didn't go to school and just graduated yourself.
