I had the phrase "I think therefore I am" run through my head. I always thought it was saying "I am because I can think" when I was little. But then I was wondering what the original implications really were.

I typed in the phrase, and apparently it means something reminiscent of the occult idea called "The Law of Attraction" or "the Secret". Also known as "Positive Affirmations" by the New Age.

I Think, therefore I am (Latin: Cogito ergo sum; French: Je pense donc je suis) is a philosophical Latin statement made by René Descartes to verify his own existence. This statement created the existential "which came first" story: the chicken or the egg. It can refer to the unreality of this world: I think I am, therefore I am. Example:
  • I think I exist, therefore I exist
  • I think I am tired, therefore I am tired
  • I think I am young, therefore I am young
  • I think I am hungry, therefore I am hungry

This is a seductive teaching that has entered the church, turning "faith" into something that is mind power, or our power.

"When I see in the bible when he says I AM, I just smile and say, Yes, I AM too" - Kenneth Copeland

“What follows the “I AM” will always come looking for you”. Joel Osteen The Power of I am

“Just repeat after me. I am strong. I am healthy. I am confident. I am confident. I am secure. I am talented. I am creative. I am disciplined. I am focused. I am valuable. I am beautiful. I am blessed. I am excited about my future. I am victorious. Alright how about amen.” Joel Osteen The Power of I am.

Joel Osteen's god forbid we say "I am a sinner". That's negative! Let's drink koolaid with Oprah.

Basically these teachings teach that there is power in the words "I am" when referring to oneself. "Abracadabra, I am". If you say "I am", according to the world, there is power in that phrase. Yet this is an example of man trying to be God. By the LOGOS Word of God, all things came into existence. And by his word things are sustained. By mere verbalized words, men think they have the power to affect reality.

However the real "I am" that has power is "Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh," or "I Am that I Am," (Ex. 3:14) who is Yehouah, or JESUS. Jesus told the pharisees "Before Abraham was, I AM". Jesus was proclaiming his deity. He called himself Jehovah/Yahweh, which is a derivative of Ehyeh, which ultimately means "I am". Thus the world tries to say "I think therefore Ehyeh". To proclaim self as the Christ is also to claim self as Yehouah, and that makes a false christ.

For false Christs (pseudochristos) and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. Matthew 24:24

People, even doctrines of alleged Christians, teach that we are God, gods or little gods. Yet God had already said "I alone am God. There are no gods before me, neither are there gods after me," and "The LORD your God is Achad, One". The psalms say "Know Yehouah is god, not we ourselves". (Ps. 100)

This first occurrence of such teachings began in Eden. The ancient serpent which deceiveth the whole world promised "Your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil". (Ge. 3:5)

There is only power in God alone. Else it is superstition.

For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18

Nimrod built the land of Babylon. He was the head of the building of Babel. The tower of Babel showed man trying to be god, and trying to reach heaven by their own power.

Yet God showed Jacob a ladder into heaven with angels ascending and descending upon it. Jesus is revealed as the ladder in John 1:51. Only God provides the way into heaven. By grace through faith we saved by Christ. Not our works. For we are no gods.

I AM spoke therefore I am, not because I think.
I'm not going to play your game. Rene Descartes came up with the quote and it means what he meant it to mean. Don't turn it into something else.

It is really amazing how you worked that all out.
