I don't think they were commonly made out of lead, because lead can be toxic. Maybe someone did a long time ago before they knew that, but not that I know of.

If you mean lead like in a lead pencil, then no. That kind of lead is actually clay and graphite. The object is not a pencil.

Yes, it is flat. Although there is a little thingy on it that stick up a bit.

Some of them are flat circles, but I was not trained on those.

Its how people did their numbers before pocket calculators were invented. They are still uses on boats and planes as backup, because they don't need electricity or batteries.
