I just wanted to know because I have always been confused by this. One of the roleplayers that I converse and play with was just saying that he had to go to school today and we were both discussing the fact that you shouldn't have to go when you hit eighteen because then you're considered an adult right? But then sometimes like when it comes to drinking and gambling you have to be twenty-one or older so I'm wondering what is the correct adult age and why can't they just stick to one or the other and not make it so confusing? (either way you shouldn't have to go to school at either age)

It used to be mostly 21, until Vietnam. Then youngsters complained that if they were adult enough be drafted, they were adult enough to vote and such. They passed the 26th amendment giving 18 year olds the right to vote. Drinking and such still varies by state.

in order to rent a car you have to be 25 I think. So that could be the age of being an adult in some way.

When you hold the responsibilities of an adult, (living on your own, working, raising a family, or going to war), and when you have the privileges given to adults (bank finances and loans, voting, drinking, gambling, renting a car and traveling out of state); then after aquiring both the responsibilities and the privileges of an adult can a person say they are fully an adult.

Some people never have the responsibility of going to war, but they can be drafted or choose to. Same with most other things listed, at a certian age or due to certian situations, some of the responsibilities of an adult are available or are something that a person has to do. In those cases even if a person is not recognized as fully being an adult (age 25?), I would count anyone who holds the responsibilities of being an adult as an adult in one way or another. No mater the age, when a person has a job in order to pay bills and live on their own they are enough an adult in my opinion. Even if they are a kid who's run away from home.

Just my thoughts.

Depends on the purpose of the question. Legally, in this country, you are an adult when you turn 18, which means you can be tried as an adult. You can also vote, and die for your country. But you cannot drink, legally. Then there is the whole debate on whether everyone at that age can be considered mature enough to be considered an adult.

Depends on what you mean by adult. Their adult enough to go die for their country at 17. 18 to vote and buy ammo. 21 to dribk liquor n buy handguns...

But what do you mean by adult enough to not go to school? Who in their right mind wouldn't want to learn and continue to learn throughout life? Dumb kids who need to learn? Lol

you cant enlist without parental consent at 17. this 17 year old did and was on the delayed entry program, and went to basic at 18. my parents allowed me to enlist.

I did serve with a few 17 years old would turn 18 by the time they completed basic and they were already finished with high school. they were also like me given parental consent to enlist.

There are two problems that I have/had with school.

1. Bullies

2. They teach you a bunch of pointless stuff that you will never use in life unless you're on a triva show.

Oh and here's an additional problem. The name of Jesus is treated like the name of Vole Voldemort, yet they don't think twice about shoving that evolution crap down your throat.

Yeahh...I have to agree with that lol. I quit school for those reasons, but went right down in the same month and got my GED.

Public school has very little to do with learning though.

at 17 where i live, one can be charged as an adult for crimes. actually...for a while there, even 15-16 year olds were charged as adults, in more serious crimes. blah. "O tolerance," etc. and yet...

17-24, there's a number of states that will offer reduced punishments and such, sometimes even seal arrests. So...I guess 17-18 is when you're "adult enough" to do things, get married, be punished as an adult...

but 25 is the point at which you're bona fide, no more "youthful mistakes," etc.

Personally...I think I'm just -now- becoming an adult, and I'm 34. To be fair, I had health problems and all sortsa jazz, but...ya know...the world could not possibly care less. Jesus cares, though, and so do people who are actually in my life, so...there's that, Praise God! :)

Yeah they've prolly changed things a little since turned me down for enlistment so long ago. (Yay! What was I thinking?!)

yeah...i dunno....I think "its all relative" kinda sorta applies here, to a point...

but not with the legal system, LOL. Of course, even there...after age 25, some places can be more forgiving than others, depending on the circumstances. I was just using that as an example.

i dont know. do you think maybe the idea is to produce semi-literate facebook addicts who can work a job and won't question authority? cuz I kinda do wonder sometimes...

Obedience to authority is one of the goals of schools. Many employers like people who have finished high school because it demonstrates that the individual is willing to do what he is told. Whether they agree with it or not.

Not so much the Facebook.

wow. that was extra snarky. call me...supah snark.

sorry about that.

I just think back to my HS experience, look at how its going now, and..."0 tolerance" seems all about compliance and discouraging independent thought. plus, I read an article on counterpunch about it (suprisingly, dude is -not- marxist, lol). the facebook comment was out of line. i just...don't like FB.

and im done. :)

not to sound like a paranoid marxist, but...

do you think the elites really want better schools, more upward mobility...especially in the low(er) income areas? i have my doubts...
