I had a spiritual awakening in 1983. For me it was a shift in consciousness from agnostic to believer. Today, I believe the Holy Spirit came to me but he did not reveal himself as the Holy Spirit at the time so I just called it the voice my Higher Power or God.
Yeats later I came to know Christ. The Holy Spirit told me 4 years ago that Christ was real; he was more than a prophet, he lived among us; he died for our sins; and he was resurrected. Basically she said, “Susan, get with the program.” So I did.
Days later I told someone I had been visited by the Holy Spirit. Even though this friend was a Christian she did not believe me. I became embarrassed and stopped talking about it.
Months after that,  I talked to my pastor about this and he asked me: “How do you know the voice was the Holy Spirit. Maybe it was Satan?” I could not answer him at the time but since then I have created a list of things that must be present if I am talking to the Holy Sprit. I share them with you and hope...

That's a good article. I think the only thing I could add to it, is that When the Holy Spirit speaks, it will never contradict any scripture.

The Lord has been teaching me how to hear His still soft voice within me. I'm a lot better than I used to be at it. It's one of those things that is easy to do but hard to learn. One time, long before I could do it at all, I had an occasion to, uh, really need the Lord's help bad! Through a domestic disturbance, I was lied about to police and they had 3 cars looking for me. I knew they were coming so I left and was walking, and praying, Lord I don't want to go to jail, please help me!

This happened after I had been in an auto accident and my back injury did not let me be able to walk very far at all. All I knew is somehow, I could not go far but had to stay away and unseen.

...and then, I heard a voice within me, plain as day. It said turn left here, go down that alley...stop here and rest...a few minutes later, ok start walking go right...go left and like that. This went on for about 45 minutes and then the voice said, it's ok to go home now. So I did. But it was so weird! several times when walking around the neighborhood I would see the police cars searching for me a couple blocks down always. But they never found me. It was like...hiding under the shadow of the Almighty. I had no overwhelming presence of God or anything but I sure heard that voice!

(That's the short version of that testimony) God is soo good!

What a beautiful testimony. I have a question about scripture. What about cultural scriptures like wearing long hair. Wearing a veill. Not speaking in public. Do I have to obey those too?

I would think that, based on Romans 14, that, if you are convicted about it then obey it, but if you are not then it would not be sin for you.

Thanks for your reply. There are some things in the Old Testament that I have a problem with. But I do agree with you that the Holy Spirit would never contradict the scriptures in the New Testament. She helped write them. Oops! Did I say She. Sorry.

I really believe the HS has spoken to Susannah.
Now the cynical atheists will say it is mentall illness. Hearing voices.
I disagree.
Youve outlined some good criteria.
For me, when the HS talks its like a mature parent. Sometimes it wants me to choose the tougher option. Like gently facing a difficult person or event. Taking me out of my comfort zone. But reassuring me that I am not alone. Wisdom speaks.

I noticed that and find it interesting. I have pondered that myself for quite awhile but hardly ever mention it because it seems to upset some people. But it sort of makes sense in a couple ways. Like, for this reason a man will leave His Father and Mother and cling to His Wife....(Uh, Bride of Christ anyone?), and also that scripture that says, the only unforgivable sin is Blaspheming the Holy Spirit...I never let anyone bad mouth my Wife, and many men (most?) are the same way. So it makes sense on that level.

But it sort of scares me a bit too. It is not my business, and it's not a salvific issue. and I do not want to offend the Lord. So I mostly don't talk like that. I think you are like, one of 3 or 4 people that I have ever heard say that. :)

Edward: Thank you for the suggestion. I added a fifth criteria which is the Holy Spirit will never contradict scripture in the New Testament.

Humble Soul: You have been so supportive. Thank you. I actually personify the whole Trinity. God talks to me like a father and can be stern but kind. Jesus teaches me about scripture and reassures me that if he could die on the cross, I could carry my own cross for awhile. The Holy Spirit is my Comforter. This is why I use the female pronoun. I associate tender comfort with women. I don't want to open this can of worms again, but I wanted you know what I see when I IMAGINE the Holy Spirit. The child is me. I had blonde hair just like her. Today she is my "inner child."

I can relate to that. It reminds me of another testimony I have. I wont derail your thread by posting it here though, I'll go post it in the Testimonies forum for you

It was both very terrifying for me in one way and utterly...awesome and wonderful in other ways. Wow!

The Lord has also spoken to me several times, when I needed it most because I was straying. The difference here is that I don't call it the voice of the Holy Spirit, but the voice of Jesus, because He said "when the Spirit of truth comes, He will not speak of Himself, but He will disclose to you what is of Mine." So I take it that when the Spirit speaks, He is speaking what Jesus is saying. So I just say "the Lord spoke."

When we are at odds with God, with a guilty conscience, confused, broken, disturbed, agitated, and everything else that brings misery, all we need is to hear the Lord's voice. He could say just about anything, but after He speaks, there is peace and healing for the soul.

I agree Brother. It was the Holy Spirit which coached me around the neighborhood to escape the police, and it was different when Jesus spoke to me audibly that one time. I just knew it. And since this is a Holy Spirit thread, I reposted that testimony in the testimony forum for you all (Susannah). Here it is...
