"To assert that the earth revolves around the sun is as erroneous as to claim that Jesus was not born of a virgin."
(Cardinal Bellarmine, 1615, during the trial of Galileo)

"The doctrine that the earth is neither the center of the universe nor immovable, but moves even with a daily rotation is absurd, and both philosophically and theologically false, and at the least an error of faith."
(Catholic Church's decision against Galileo Galilei)

"Evolution is a bankrupt speculative philosophy, not a scientific fact. Only a spiritually bankrupt society could ever believe it ..... Only atheists would accept this Satanic theory."
(Jimmy Swaggart)

Four centuries ago, the Church staked much of its reputation, including the credibility of the "virgin birth" on dismissing Galileo's assertion that the world was not only a sphere but rotated around the sun. Given the low esteem many Christians have toward science, why should we believe a "revolving earth" theory that the Church, in its wisdom, has already dismissed as "absurd," "erroneous" and "theologically false."

If one dismisses science, what possible reasons could we have for second guessing the Church's decision?

On what basis would we change our minds since most of us have never been able to view the world from space and any other evidence would be suspect because it would be associated with science?

Shouldn't the "flat earth," as a known fact, be in our scientific texts and curriculums as the only viewpoint accepted by the Church?

Do we have any reason to believe that Jimmy Swaggart has any more insight or knowledge of God's master plan that Cardinal Bellarmine?

In case anyone is wondering, the Earth does not rotate around the sun. It rotates around its axis. It revolves around the sun.

The earth does revolve around the sun. Science is not satan's tool either.

Incidentally, the chairman of the Kansas committee that (until the next election corrected things) took evolution out of state education standards, admitted he did not know whether or not the Earth revolved around the Sun.

One would think that there should be some kind of qualifying test for such a position.

Its satins evil influence? [Incorrectly used word], I thought my sheets just felt nice I didn't realise they were satanic bedsheets! :)

Or did he mean that he couldn't be sure because he had never seen the earth revolving around the sun?

Was he saying he didn't beleive it or just he couldn't be sure of it?

He apparently was open to it being true, but he didn't know whether it did or not.

And this guy was on the State School Board.

Incredible.

I've come to the conclusion that there are inept people all over the place. That said, this is even surprising to me.

Personally, I am amazed at both the people who try to present a conflict in the Bible in regards to the sun and the earth and also in the people who are open to the idea of an earth-centric system.

The idea that the corrupted catholic church of the 17th century made correct, Christian statements is laughable.

Actually, the Pope was open to Gallileo's assertion, and even encouraged him. Gallileo was suppressed for political reasons, not religious ones.

However, Martin Luther is on record as saying that a literal reading of Scripture rules out a heliocentric system.

There were Protestants and Catholics on both sides of the issue.

Oh trust me, I agree. I'm simply saying that the catholic church during that time period was very wrong on a lot of subjects. Unfortunately, I'm not knowledgable in the circumstances around Gallileo's supression beyond just what I learned in high school.

And make no mistake about it, I'm not that big of a fan about Martin Luther either. He's just one of many people who were fed up with the RCC and he just happened to be the first to make a major separation. There were many other groups who tried to worship faithfully to scripture and were persecuted extensively but Luther managed to bring together such a large population of followers that the RCC was unable to squelch the rebellion.

There always have been and always will be good protestants and catholics and there always have been and always will be bad protestants and catholics.

BTW, you should post on the other forums, Barb - you really keep me on my toes!
