Actually, scientists don't think of it as a "living fossil", since no member of this species has been found in the fossil record. You might as well call a pigeon a "living fossil" since there are feathered dinosaurs in the fossil record.

Coelacanths were once very numerous as fresh water fish. As they died out in their primary habitat a long time ago, they were thought at one time, to have ended with no descendants. Later, it was found that some of them evolved into deep sea organisms, rather different than their ancient ancestors.

The AIG account is one "steeped in assumptions and fanciful storytelling." But it's just wrong.
