I cannot believe this! This company is allowed to hold a trademark for the word "Jesus". And they are suing for using it.

There is not alot of details in here so I dont know everyhting that is going on, but it seems crazy to me.

So anyone selling something with the word Jesus on it, can be sued? This is of special concern to me since I am in this industry.

But its much bigger than just this industry. Can someone trademark the word Cat and now sue someone for selling a bumbper sticker that says I love my cat?

To your point, I don't think this was filed in the US, so as long as you use His name on your products, respectfully, you should not have a problem as long as you are not selling them in the country(s) where the trademark was registered.

There are alot of men in mexico named Jesus, and here in the states as well. Now if it said "Jesus Christ"....

They own the trademark in the US, if I am reading the article correctly.

Nope, they are just suing for the use of it in the US, the trademark was registered in another country. Presumably Italy.

Hopefully the US Trademark office will have the brains not to allow this to happen. Of course we are talking about an agency in our government, so anything is possible.

I did a quick google search to see if this could be reversed. What came up was a page filled with legal cases. My best guess is this is will end up in the courts and the trademark revolked.

That's not what I see:

'The Wall Street Journal reports the company, called Jesus Jeans, persuaded the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to allow them to register the word "Jesus" as a trademark in 2007, giving them exclusive rights in the U.S. to the name.'

I think they are already suing companies in the US who are using the trademarked name for profit.

"Since then, Jesus Jeans has launched a crusade against at least a dozen U.S. companies selling Jesus-themed apparel, mostly start-up clothing lines. Its litigators claim the companies are appropriating the name "Jesus" without the trademark owner's blessing.'

I remember 25 odd years ago, some bright dude in the Pentagon thought it would be a great idea to name a submarine Corpus Christi.

The religious folk decided this was going to be their issue. The non religious folk, did, too, in the opposite way. The Navy was embarrassed at its own dude. Then...Ronald Reagan intervened and decided the sub would be called the 'City of Corpus Christi'. Problem solved.

Maybe it is the language of the article that is confusing. When I read that I thought that they had just sued the US Patent and Trademark office for the exclusive right of useof the name, the article does not mention if it was actually granted.

Either way, the owners of this company will have some 'splainin to do. Personally I see this as blasphemy.

Who I feel sorry for are the small business owners who are being sued and will likely end up bankrupt before the courts settle this matter. I do expect to see this decision reversed....the key is how long and how much money will it take.

And how much political and social pressure that might be involved. You have to imagine there are a number of Christian groups that are not going to sit still for this kind of blatant misuse of our Savior's name.

As far as I know the individual who hold the majority ownership in the company is named Jesus. I don't see that as the problem. I've know many people named Jesus. Jesus has always been a pretty common name from what I have seen.

The problem I see a church or company wanting to use the name Jesus on clothing being told they have to get permission from this company and pay them for that right.

I actually have a problem with anyone named Jesus, other than our Lord and Savior that is, and view it as a breaking of the third commandment. I know this is not a popular thought, but really there is only one Jesus in my book.

It's very, very common in Roman Catholic countries.

Women may be called 'Mary Jesus', as in Spanish: 'María Jesús'.

Men's names may include 'Mary'. The French neo-fascist leader is called 'Jean-Marie Le Pen'.

Like it or not, it's a very deep-seated custom.

I am sure most of these companies would that are being sued, are not able to afford to pay a lawyer for the long legal battle that this company could make it. I keep thinking, if they served me, what would I do.

It looks like from my research that one of the companies is going to fight it.
