I was thinking about trying to be a waitress/bartender while I am in college
so I could work less and hopefully make more money while I focus on school..
not sure what I am going to do yet
if you play your cards right you can make money from the gi bill, and its legal, i did i made $800 to$1000 month when i went three quarter time. that's a va term for the amount of college credits you take

Drunkiness is a sin, why would you encourage that, kind of a like a christian stripper, the casino one is a grey area, beacuse gambling to is addicting, and there's a verse on gambling, but i'm not sure

hey what's wrong with bartenders and casinos?, i do agree with the guy, there is nothing wrong with it, some casinos and bartenders and even club owners follow certain rules, mostly like having a RSA Certificate before they could have a job or even have a business or something.

How about executioners?

What about positions with the army which require them to kill others?

Medical doctors when they are required by law to participate in assisted suicides?

Abortionists?

Perhaps it will soon be difficult for Christians even to be pastors --- when they are required by law to perform "marriage cermonies" to unite homosexual couples. Or what will probably be required sooner ---- that religious leaders not speak against homosexual practice in the pulpit, on the basis that it is "hate speech".

The commandment is actually "murder" killing in combat is not murder IMO.

I'm going to chime in as another person who's ok with a Christian working in a bar or casino.

Why, you ask? Because my mother is a God believing and fearing, Bible believing woman. I was born in 1991. My mother has been working in the casino industry since 1995. She's had to because her parents didn't think she was smart enough to go to school, so they immediately set her to working full time at 15. She had an eighth grade education for a long time.

And my father left when I was little, leaving my mother to care for my sister and I alone. So when fast food didn't provide a good enough living for us, my mother had to apply for work at a casino. She's worked in Table Games, Slots, and almost everywhere you can think of.

But now she's working as a manager in the Beverage Department. She's had to take what seems like a million and one classes about liquor licenses, health safety, and dealing with customers. It's part of her job to make sure things are safe and to cut off drunk people. That's the way it's been in every casino she's ever worked in.

The casino may make more money when people buy more drinks, but if a drunk person causes issues or hurts themselves or someone, it's not worth getting sued. It's not in the best interest of a casino to have incredibly drunk people around. I can't speak for every casino on the planet, but where my mom has always worked, safety is number one.

The point is, you can't judge in every situation and paint with such a broad brush. Certain circumstances come along and we're stuck in a less than ideal situation. I'm in one right now.

And for the record, my mom has a GED now, and is taking college courses. She's thinking of becoming a medical technician, and I couldn't be prouder of her. :)

A used car salesman and a lawyer comes to mind.

A psychic medium in a hippy new age shop probably is not ideal either.

A sex worker or stripper for obvious reasons.

I think they top my list.

here christians lawyers push to allow us to worship in freedom otherwise christians couldn't wear their crosses in school. we couldnt honor our dead vets on public property with a large cross.

There are probably not that many but here's what comes to mind:

1) Obviously anything illegal
2) Abortion doctor
3) Occupations making/selling pornography
4) Anything with false religions or the occult

theres no such thing as an abortion doctor. those that do abortions are ob-gyns that have been trained to do that. all of them can do that. few of them do unles they want to as there is the rare case where abortion is needed to save the mother.

Yes Jason, but there are doctors who mainly just do abortions all day at clinics (planned parenthood, etc). I'd call that guy an abortion doctor.

i know but all of them start as ob-gyn and they elect to do that job as there are recruiters that tell them of the job. they are made to watch abortion videos. its said that few of them can do it because of the processes that is done on the babies makes them vomit. so those that do it are well desentised to murdering babies. hmm a morbid thought. if they are that desentised to death i wonder...

Really? As a combat Marine Corps vet I take offense to the Army remark. I have killed in combat, but never murdered. If it were not for a strong military then life and freedom as we now know it would not be.

I am serving in Afghanistan.. and I became a Christian after I joined..
I never once thought of it as disobeying God though..
I mean, they have wars in the bible.. and yes, we all carry weapons..
We don't want to use it, but if we have to.. we will..

I don't think that makes us less Christian, we are fighting for
what we believe in..

I don't know what the people says about being in the
military or anything like that..
I hope I'm not disobeying Him though..
Kim,
You are not disobeying God by serving in the military.

When I was looking for a job, I would just look up

1 Thessalonians 5:21-22 "
21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
22 Abstain from all appearance of evil."

Also

Philippians 4:8

"8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."

When I did so, God allowed His Word to speak to me and show me what kind of job would be pleasing to Him.

I would suggest that the job we seek to work, should be one that will allow us to be something that will honor Christ in all that we do.

For me I can't see how being a bartender or a Casio worker could allow a Christian to be avoiding things that are "sketchy" or "taboo".

Just my 2 Cents..

Drinking is not a sin. Getting drunk is. Gambling is not a sin. It is not even mentioned as such. Just my 2 cents..

Has anybody mentioned politicians? Or lawyers? A judge? (speaking tongue-in-cheek)
Doesn't the bible say anything about lying? Are we supposed to care from the heart and speak the truth in kindness?
What about Investment Banker or those in Finance? Or Officer of most any major Corporation?
Are we not supposed to love others as we love ourselves?

If we worked at McDonalds, are we not trying to deceive people by selling food where prep time and labor cost are more important than nutrition? Any job that includes lying or deceiving others should be included on the list.

The Bible does mention Prostitutes and Tax-Collectors but things have changed.
Of course, any occupation that involves breaking the law should be avoided, so Christians should not be drug-dealers, should not be involved in smuggling, etc, but what about jobs that rely on social networking? If the only way you can get into an occupation is through who you know, isn't this being a respecter of persons? Imagine Advertising without respect for persons, or "High Society" and the networking that is done at Country Clubs or Yacht Clubs, or any "exclusive membership" club for that matter?

Some here have expressed their concerns about being a Bartender because of the sales of alcohol. My thought, why stop there? Working as a clerk at the local grocery store, or as a flight attendant contributes to these sales. Does drinking in public vs. getting drunk at home matter? Some barber shops and hair salons serve alcohol. In japan, it can be bought from a vending machine.

Please understand that I am speaking "tongue-in-cheek". To create the examples above, I've considered what some may call "Immoral Jobs" not what Christians should or should not do. My actual opinion is that this is a personal choice and it has to be made with prayer and a clear conscience. If a career choice is thought to be sin by a brother or sister, then to them, it is a sin. This would be the requirement for the Christian: to consider God in all things.

There's a great verse! :)

There was a thread a while back on being a tattooist, too; I guess if more Christians did this job, some would say there would be greater scope for tasteful work and God-honoring parlors. (But I don't want to get off topic, if it is at all off topic.)

Agreed. With this in mind, we could expand the list of occupations to be avoided. Much of the commercial entertainment industry sells products by enticing others to sin. I'm thinking specifically about television but when we broaden the view a bit and recall the Scripture from Revelations that ties Merchants to Mystery Babylon - the base and root of the world's economy is questionable. What is the root of all evil? Loving money, right?

In the last analysis though, we are in the world but not of it. My thought is that Christians are to be the salt of the earth and act as a preservative, that is, an agent of restraint. Without the Spirit of God in us, there would be nothing to restrain the desires and lusts of the flesh.

If you walk with God he will take you on a journey through life.
The more you communicate with him, the more you will understand what he wants you to do.

Here's what I have learned:

If a job involves sexual sin, don't do it.
If a job causes other people to think sexual sin, don't do it.
If a job goes against your concience, don't do it.
If a job involves evil intent, don't do it.
If a job requires you to do wrong, don't do it.
If a job hurts other people, don't do it.

In any case, the closer you walk with God, he will tell you in your heart if it is right or wrong for you.

Disagree. Conviction from the Holy Spirit is a personal thing. There could be two bartenders, one with a conscience that wouldn't serve someone too much, and another who doesn't and gives some on the house to someone who's falling down drunk.

I work in the service industry a perfectly benign job one would think. But I have been asked to lie and cheat customers and that would be bad. I think almost any job could be acceptable depending on the state of ones heart.

Romans 14 is relevant, I think.
