Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—

Does one really have the "right" to become sons of God?

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: ~ AV

The New American Standard Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible tells us that exousia can mean several different things including “authority,” “right,” and “power.” It further shows us that the New American Standard Bible (NASB) translates exousia as “authority” 65 times, as “right” 11 times, and as “power” 11 times.

As the New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology tells us, Jesus

“has the exousia to give his life and to take it again (Jn 10:18) .... Those who receive him and believe in his name are given exousia to become children of God (Jn 1:12).” - p. 610, Vol. 2, 1986.

John 1:12 is translated, “are given the right [exousia] to become children of God” in the following Bibles: NASB, NIV, AT, GNB, TEV, NEB, REB, CBW, LB, and the translations by Moffatt and William Barclay.

My Bible puts it this way:

[12] But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God;
[13] who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. John 1:12-13 RSV

I suppose it's up to the Lord who has the right to become his children.

Rights are not something we have. They are something that is given to us. Our governments give us our legal rights, and God gives us the right to be called His children.

The TOG

the government gave us the right to worship god? no, that was from god. he gave us the right and command to worship. the blood freed us to exercise the right given by god. if the government gave us the right to worship god then they can take it back.

Would you please quote the part of my post where I said that? If you can find it, that is, because I don't see it there. I said the government gives us legal rights. I didn't mentions spiritual rights in that context.

The TOG

legal right to worship. define what that power came from. in Russia It was legal to deny a god given right. the us declared the right to worship god from god as he gave it to us. its in the preamble of the declaration of indepence. the government was to secure the right to worship not grant it.

the reason we came to be was from the fact that that the puritians and others were denied the right to worship god.of course that did include any faith by the first amemdment. my point was that nations have tried to take what a right was given by god that cant be denied.

None of us have the right to be a child of God, but through Gods grace and mercy on us we can reconcile ourselves back to God without any condemnation as we are renewed by His Spirit

No one has a right to become a child of god but it is a gift of grace given thru Christ.
