It's commonly known that David and Jonathan we're an excellent example of friendship. I'm just curious as to your thoughts on this passage.

1SA 18:1 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
1SA 18:2 And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's house.
1SA 18:3 Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.
1SA 18:4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.

That's just the kind of relationship that i have enjoyed with a number of other men, my sons and Jesus Christ.

1SA 18:4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.

This is nothing sexual. :-?
Quoting from the McArthur study bible...

Jonathan willingly and subserviently relinquished the outer garments and instruments that signified his position as prince of Israel and heir to the throne. Jonathan, a godly worshiper of Yahweh, quickly discerned that David was God's anointed and, without reservation, offered the robe of succession to the true king of Israel.

Jonathan's action was symbolic of a transfer of royal power from Saul's family to David.

1SA 18:2 And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's house.

Saul's interest in keeping David in his household was more self-serving than a token of generous hospitality. Saul was aware of his promise of wife and wealth (17:25), and, no doubt, the stirrings of anxiety/fear were in his heart toward David, who appeared as a threat. Saul preferred to have him in the court to keep a watchful eye on the young upstart.

2 Samuel
1:26 - New King James Version

I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; You have been very pleasant to me; Your love to me was wonderful, Surpassing the love of women.

2 Samuel
1:26 - World English Bible

I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan: Very pleasant have you been to me: Your love to me was wonderful, Passing the love of women.

2 Samuel
1:26 - THE MESSAGE

O my dear brother Jonathan, I'm crushed by your death. Your friendship was a miracle-wonder, love far exceeding anything I've known-- or ever hope to know.

"This covenant relationship between David and Jonathan is the clearest Old Testament picture of the covenant relationship that we have with Christ. He has said to us, "All that I possess is now yours. All of my power belongs to you." We have an incredible inheritance because of the covenant that Christ made with us. The Lord's Supper is a reminder of that covenant. Every time we participate in that great symbolic event, we need to remember the covenant that we have with Him. We have entered into the deepest of relationships known to man. He has given us an incredible inheritance.

But there's one last aspect of the covenant between David and Jonathan that is very important to us. When two ancient people cut a covenant, it was until death. The only way that they could get out of the covenant was through death. Jesus cut a covenant with us. He was faithful until death. We, too, must be faithful until death. Once we've entered the covenant, there's no turning back. We have all of His riches in the heavenly places, but we also have the responsibility to follow Him all the way until death.

David and Jonathan's covenant relationship teaches us a lot about life - and a lot about death"

It's an example of how two men can have a loving and intimate relationship that is NOT sexual... something males in our society know nothing of

We've discussed these passages before and most who read them don't want to accept what is written or implied as it contradicts what they want to believe or will admit to being possible.

Not necessary to re post what someone else said without a comment! This is how cliches begin!

Well, I don't know about nothing. It is very difficult for you to see this kind of friendship in most of our society, not just men.

The whole posting was given as a quote.

I, and a number of others are not bothered by Rez's comments anyhow!
