We all know that God will do anything for us, but for many things, we must initiate our walk by asking for something. So...how to initiate a walk in the Spirit?

Actually very true as He has given us the life of His Son, to dwell within us, so that we live from His life, and walk as He walked.

Which is our goal.

Peter says it this way -

  • His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness,

Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
2 Peter 1:2-4

He has given us everything we need to live a godly life.

It’s our job to “sow” or invest our life towards godliness and godly things, such as prayer, worship, praying in the Spirit, bible study to show ourselves approved as workers who rightly divide the word of truth, listening to godly worship and praise music...

Rather than going to bars, listening to worldly music, drinking, getting high, hanging out with sinners, watching ungodly movies, reading ungodly things...

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. Galatians 6:7-8

The short answer is read and pray, like is the answer to so much of our growth in Christ

Praying in the Spirit is a major key to developing spiritual senses and becoming sensitive to His leading.

Worshiping and praying in the spirit.

This is a good thread with a lot of good info laid down here. However, let's take a look at this statement as well as the original question of the thread for the benefit of those young in Christ, shall we?

I agree Brother, but...what is it, to walk in the Spirit?

Now I just sat down and so do not have my scripture references ready, but they can be added in a few.

From what I have learned and to paraphrase scripture, the answer is...to walk in the Spirit we do not fulfill the lustful desires of the flesh...so true, but is that not something that happens because we are walking in the Spirit? A secondary thing which happens after we begin walking in the Spirit, then we will not and do not fulfill the lustful desires of the flesh! Right? You with me?

We all know that God will do anything for us, but for many things, we must initiate our walk by asking for something. So...how to initiate a walk in the Spirit?

The short answer is read and pray, like is the answer to so much of our growth in Christ. So, we have to fine tune our frequency to that of the Spirit and the Kingdom of God. Remember Jacob's Ladder? The father speaks to His Son, no one comes unto the Father but through Jesus. the Son speaks to the Holy Spirit, and...the Holy Spirit speaks to us. Jacob's Ladder illustrates this. The Father and Son are above, a ladder is beneath. The ladder is the Holy Spirit. This is our way to Jesus, the Son.

Everyone must start to think on themselves as a spirit being, because that is what we are. I am not my body. I am a spirit. I have a soul, and I live in a body. Our spirit must join with the Holy Spirit and become one. Resonating at the same frequency as the Holy Spirit and God's kingdom. Once our spirit and the Holy Spirit are one...it is then that we can be said to be...walking in the Spirit.

As we walk in the Spirit, our spirit can grow and mature and our sanctification and growth will progress. Over time, our mind will come into agreement with our spirit and the Spirit of God.

Then, we will not fulfill the lustful desires of the flesh. Right?
Yes.

Great post, and I see a great spiritual work that the Holy Spirit is doing in you, Edward.

Edward means faithful steward.

I pray that you will be a great and faithful steward of the riches that I see coming forth from your life, to produce a fruitful harvest of blessing and salvation in you and all of your precious family.

God bless you.

I'm sorry J....
What I'm trying to say is regarding the wording of the explanation of Walking in the Spirit...

To me it just sounds too much like we could be 100% PERFECT and I don't believe we can.

Do you believe that when a person is led by the Spirit, and is walking according to the Spirit in which they are obeying the leading of the Spirt, that they will commit sin?

I never said nor used the phrase 100 percent perfect.

We are having a great discussion, let’s stay on track with the things the scripture says we are to do, and the things we will accomplish if we do.

If we could live without sinning, John would not have had to explain a resolution IF we did...
1 John 2:1

John was instructing us so we would not sin....
Paul did the same as did the other writers...
BUT IF we DID sin, Jesus is our advocate with the Father.
This means that it's possible to sin.

Also, Jesus in John 20:23 gave the Apostles authority to forgive sin.

I also have to lean on the writings of the ECFs that were presented with this problem. They thought that after baptism the person would no longer sin. It wasn't long till they found out this was not the case...confession ensued in all its various forms, after hundreds of years.

Yes. I think I still sin. I'm not perfect.
God is pure...when we judge we sin.
When we omit doing something we should do we sin.
Sin is not only BIG things....we become better, as I've said before...but I think even the Pope sins - in fact he's said he does.

I just think that the wording is important so as not to discourage anyone. (but still say the truth).

I think that perhaps it is possible to not sin and be perfect but this is only when we are walking in the Spirit at the moment. Then, so long as we obey the Spirit we do not sin. Whether we are healing someone or even breaking out of prison at the moment, like God has done a few times for different people. God is above all of mns laws and does whatever He wishes with what is His, so there's no sin involved.

However, when we are not walking in the Spirit it is then that we stumble and sin. It is very hard to walk in the Spirit moment by moment every day all the time. I have been trying. As soon as we make one of our own decisions about something that we should consult the Lord about, we essentially turn our back on Him I think and begin to live in the flesh. I am nowhere near being able to walk in the Spirit all the time, but I have been getting at lest a little noticeably better at it. No wonder scripture says meditate on His Word day and night and pray without ceasing because I think that is what it takes to walk in the Spirit more and more. So many distractions!

1 John 2:1

The good news is we have a choice, and the power and grace to make that choice.

When we fall short, we have a promise that says -

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

When we are cleansed of all unrighteousness, we stand before Him justified and blameless.

The more time I spend with Him, the more of His truth I embrace.

this is a good thread. i guess im at the point in my sanctification (yes, there's a post in the talk and advice area, lol) where I can kinda see...

THIS is what you were saved from, pulled out of, etc. sin, satan, self, and the world.

maybe its one of those things...now that im not simple minded and sickly and blah blah blah...

'wise as serpents, innocent as doves.'

i think i might be in a position to build a simple, quiet life now, with hep from my parents...only because of Christ, of course. to that end, i keep thinking of Matthew 7:24-27.

that verse makes me think that going forth in the spirit...Proverbs 3:5-6 applies...

will make my '2nd act' (LOL) the one worth remembering. :)

In the flesh we will always sin because that is its nature and we are not yet made immortal or incorruptible. If we are being led by the Spirit and walking in the Spirit their is no room for the flesh to mix with the Spirit as the flesh is a hostile enemy of the Spirit, Romans 8:7, and thus we can not sin if we are being led by and walking in the Spirit.

Do we always walk in the flesh? Do we always walk in the Spirit? The choice is ours whether we sin in the flesh or are perfect while walking in the Spirit as you can not be perfect and sin at the same time.

Colossians 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

Why are we not always seeking those things from above is because we have yet to be fully able to mortify the things of the flesh, but yet we also have an intercessor Christ Jesus we can go before as we humble our self and confess that which we have a problem with and will be forgiven. Our area of weakness in the flesh is the area of God's strength to help us within our infirmities.

Amen.

Amen,
This reminds me of Romans 12:2 NIV
2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
