These are what make a man ‘unclean’; but eating with unwashed hands does not make him ‘unclean.’

srry, but while reading this sparked a chucle from me. Is jesus condoning uncleanliness? Furthermore, would jesus not know of the ailments that can suffice from not washing your hands before you consume food?

I understand that this is the less important part of this passage . I got the whole, food cant be bad, but what comes from teh heart can. but this is. well, bad![/quote]

It's rhetoric. The Pharisees were trying to trap Jesus with a cleanliness and purity question (which are external actions), and Jesus responds with a connection between internal and external actions. So a man with unclean hands is far more acceptable than a man with an unclean heart and clean hands.
