You know, it's really rather interesting for me to say this but believe it or not sometimes I think I have very miniscule memories of being a baby and actually being born. Which is very incredible for me to say since I confess that a lot of the time I can't even remember what I had for breakfast the day before. :lol

So how exactly does memory work? I know that the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body, and that the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body, but other than that I don't really know how it all works. :chin

This is a can of worms type of question. Memory in itself is complex and is a lot of explaining. You mentioned the left brain controlling the right side of the body and such. Are we talking about muscle memory or how memories of events are stored?

Both actually,.. but maybe I shouldn't have asked the question if it's too complicated to go into. :neutral

No worries, the explanations are a bit lengthy perhaps. For muscle memory , have you ever practiced a new song for a musical instrument, learned to ride a bike, learned a new trick on a skateboard, or something that required movement in learning something? Your brain is using procedural memory and recognizes a pattern of motions to help you complete the task you are doing. That is why when you practice something again and again it gets easier for your brain to help you carry it out.

Long-term memory is stored in the hippocampus for later use. Usually things that were impactful, meaningful, things we do often, and traumatic events get stored here. Short-term memory is controlled by the frontal lobe and information to be used for a shorter time and something we don't give a whole lot of meaning to is used here like dialing a phone number.

Working memory finds a way to use data in some way like sharing a phone number with someone else or writing it down.

This is a cool article on what parts of the brain deal with what types on memory:

You,do know that if a hemisphere is removed the other takes over.

While not fully but its a good read

The furthest back I can remember was being under 3 years old and laying on my parents bed or in a crib. The sun was shining through a side window through a tree and the shadows of the leaves were dancing on the wall. I was over sensitized by it because it was so dazzeling. I remember crying loudly.

That's too bad that you were crying, :sad but pretty interesting that you can remember that far back. :)

Yeah, we moved from that house when I was 3. I told my mother what the floorplan was when I was in my 40s. She was flabbergasted. I went back to look at the house and drew a sketch of what I remembered the house looking like. It was incredibly accurate. My mother started becoming concerned that I could recall incidents she'd rather I'd forgotten.

To be honest with you I don't even think she is worthy of that title as your mother just as much as your father isn't worthy enough to be called that. Not by a long shot. :nonono

I can remember from when I was 1. My parents went out to eat and I said, "I remember this place." They said, "We haven't been here in years." My dad asked me what was over the walls and I said, "Ivy." And he asked what was going around the restaurant and I said, "A toy train!" I could describe it and he said, "Well...I guess you do remember."

I don't know how to describe this one, but it seems like maybe I remembered some events or I dreamt them. I remember being held, safe, and warm and seeing new things. My dad was showing me the pictures on the wall a bit after I was born and telling me about them. Then my mom was telling him to bring the baby from another room because it was time for me to be fed. I am thinking I must have dreamt it, but that stuff really happened so I don't know.

This will sound weird to the nonspiritual, but I believe all babies talked with the Lord before being sent to earth. Whenever I'm asked to hold a new born, I mentally ask the baby "Did you just come from talking to the Lord ?" 2 out of 3 times the baby will smile real big. I smile real big back. Anyone watching will say "Did you see that? He/she just smiled at you." I say "I know."
So babies even remember further back if you ask them soon enough after birth, just as they become aware of there surroundings. A few weeks old.

This begs an interesting question for me as to how close babies are to the Lord before their birth. I suppose there is nothing that tells us for sure.

I love that story!! :biggrin

Btw, I was just talking about yesterday how when there's a lot on my brain that I am trying to think about or remember to say it becomes like a computer that is trying to load way too much information on it at once and then it starts to crash.
