I've read most the posts on movies in here and was wondering when do you as christians so NO to a movie. Movies like Lord of the Rings. Does this in anyway go against what the Bible teaches? Also is there any difference between this type of movie and books such as DragonLance? I myself have read DragonLance as a teen and also have gone to both Lord of the Ring movies. To me there is no difference besides the story line. Just trying to get an idea how Christians in here feel about it.

There are a LOT of movies that go against the bibles teachings. I hate to watch movies with a lot of language in them. I cringe and usually turn it off. But there are a lot of GOOD movies that may have language or things that go against the bible.

The way I look at it is that I'm an adult and I know wrong from right. Also, I have to be around sin every day of my life. The world is FULL of sin. That doesn't mean that I'm going to do it though.

I watched Harry Potter and have been told by family members that I'm going to hell because I watched it and also let my kids see it.

I won't see a movie with a lot of sexuality in it. Of course, a lot of stuff can get into a movie that wont be mentioned in the rating, so if a sexual scene does come up it I'll just look away.

I'm against violence in all forms, but most violence and gore in movies/on tv don't fase me, so I usually wouldn't say no to a movie that has violence in it.

I'll never see a movie that has a theme that mocks God.

Swearing doesn't really fase me either. Besides, you can't get that many major swears (like the F word) into pg 13 movies, and I can't see any R rated movies without my parent/legal guardian.

How would LOTR go against the Bible? The violence? The wizards? I don't understand what you mean. LOTR is set in a totally fictional/fantasy world where "magic"/wizardry(sp?) isn't satanic.

ALMOST any thing that is prime time, or mainstream is sinfull. Just gotta be careful in this world. Keep your eyes open :o

If you knew anything about Tolkien, you would know, Lord of The Rings really has no 'magic' in it whatsoever. Ok, so there is a little bit, of course there is, it's fantasy.

J.R.R. Tolkien was a christian, not only was his lifestyle and friends representative of this, but it shows in his writings as well. The only creatures with 'magical' abilities in Tolkiens work are the Elves and the Wizards.

Sauron = The dark lord

Sauramon = Once a great 'Angel', protectorite of middle-earth, deceived by the power of Sauron

Gandalf Stormcrow = Grey among the order of Angels, when he dies fighting the Balrog, he strays out of thought, out of time, then is sent back to middle-earth to vanquish Sauramon's throne and end Sauron's reign.

The Lord of The Rings is a story about good versus evil, written by a Christian in a fictional, awesome, and interesting way. It was around way before and in fact, gave inspiration to the creators of Dungeons and Dragons, who is owned by TSR (Wizards of The Coast) who also writes the DragonLance series.

Because they were inspired by, does not give them the same quality as Tolkien, and trust me, the worlds, storylines, and underpinnings are nothing alike. I've read a few of the DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS WORLD books, and that's where I draw the line.

In movies, I draw the line where sexual encounters are longer than a few seconds or are not romantic (have no true reason for being there) and explicit, rather violent fight scenes (like the first battle in Gangs of New York) I never finished watching that.

Pippin, is that Conan O'Brien in your sig? I didn't realize his hair was that long. Heh.

Yes agreed with LOTR. While I wont insult the venerable Professor by trying to call it an alegory when he so emphaticly stated that it wasnt and that he hated alegory, he himself also said that there was much symbolism and aplicability to Christian themes. The symbolism in the main trilogy becomes even more aparent upon reading The Simarillion (which I wont go into simply for length reasons). Unfortunatly because of the brilliance of Professor Tolkien's work, his ideas world and races have been borrowed by those without the same Christian worldview.

p.s. to Pippen - lemme guess, Pippen is your favorite followed by Legolas  , cant really blame you even as a happily married woman I have eyes enough to see that Orlando Bloom is one excedingly handsome man (Im a sucker for big brown eyes  ). I was a pre movie Legolas fan, Ive always had a thing for elves, and I must say Mr. Bloom did a lovely job with the Prince of Mirkwood. And yes Pip is verry cute - in a teddy-bear and puppy sort of way - I guess Ive never really gone in for short men, hubby is VERRY tall.

If the movie is really good, I won't let anything ruin it for me.

Just becauase you see and hear something doesn't mean you have to become it. Control your mind, and don't allow bad influence to affect you.

I won't watch movies with tons of sex in them because it's not realistic and it also makes me confused about what normal people do. I don't mind swearing if it's for a point or do illustrate a character but I hate movies where everyone just swears and gets upset for no reason whatsoever. That's not how people are really.

Pippin

do you think Dogma mocks God? just curious.
i think that being able to tell the difference between right and wrong is what's important in watching movies. i won't watch a movie that doesn't have a plot, or make you think about things a bit differently. sometimes, characters have to do "bad" things to add color. like what sillynikki said, the world is full of sin. there's no way to keep it all out, so just filter it through your mind and tell yourself what's good and bad. if i see a movie w/ killing and violence, i don't wanna go run out an off someone. same w/ language and sex, i don't base my actions around movies. i don't do what i think looks "cool" in a movie cause that's rediculous (and i'm sorry, but the Jackass movie was REALLY funny, although a little ...rough-around-the-edges) i can still laugh at the funny, and disregard the "evil".

Ironicaly...no, lol. My fave is Eowyn, and my runnerup would probably be Sam or Pippin. And my liking Pip has NOTHING to do with his looks, lol  , I just fell in love with the character. I actually have zero intrest in Orlando (hes handsome, but not my type :) ), though I used to like Dom and Elijah (I was young).
As for my screename, I've used the name Pippin at all message boards for the past two years, and I tried changing it once, and it just feels odd not having the name Pippin  .

I have never seen Dogma, and I don't really know what it is about. I am familiar with the makers, though, and thier movies (LOVE Mallrats!!), so I would just say from what little I know of it, that it does not mock God. Thier movies are not to be taken seriously most of the time, and if there happened to be anything bad in it it would be so ridiculous and comidic no one (including myself) should take it to heart/ be offeneded.
