That's my humble conclusion.
We might envy the movie stars or the singers. But we don't see the hard work and trials they go through.

drugs, mental illness.
I envy people who can work hard though. Especially customer service Jobs. No but jobs like concreting are tough tough tough.
If you have fragile self esteem and a fragile body, there aren't many jobs you can do. I can't think of any.
God I am sorry I wasn't tough enough. Should I have had more faith in you?

I consider a job ideal when one enjoys going to work. It may not pay the best and may not be the ideal job for others but they do exist.

I had a job like that. I worked in the logging industry in northern MN for a few years and loved it. The work was very hard physically and at times challenging mentally but I got to work outside all day in the forest and fresh air. I love the smell of the trees, plants, and fresh cut wood. When I worked in that industry I was healthy; in great physical condition, strong as an ox, and never got sick from so much as a cold.

We had fun with that job too; challenging ourselves and each other to fell trees with pinpoint accuracy and putting in a good day's work.

I suppose your next question is why I didn't stay in that line of work. Life's circumstance sometimes gets in the way and in my case that is what happened. My marriage fell apart, I went into a sever depression, and I began to struggle with staying focused on things. Eventually, my life's direction changed and I had to leave that career.

I believe our pastor has found his ideal job. He truly seems to enjoy what he is doing and enjoys working with us and certainly is not overly paid from our small country congregation. It's truly his calling.

My brother-in-law has found his ideal job. He could retire at any time but won't because he says he enjoys his work too much. He told me, "I don't consider what I do to be a job."

I am impressed you did logging. That's a real macho job. You must have been in top physical condition.
Bricklaying. There's a tough job. I wouldn't last 5 minutes on a building site. About 30 years ago I did a days construction. Needed physio on my back for a week. Nightmare job for the wrong person. Which was me.

The problem with brick laying and probably most other jobs or careers is repetitive motions which can be very hard on a body.

Another job I have right now that I really enjoy is farming. Again, I get to work outside and love the smells and sights that go with it. But, sometimes I wonder if it is enjoyable to me because it is a hobby farm (only 80 acres) and I don't rely on it for my main source of income. Perhaps if I was full-time farming the stress would get to me. I may never know.

I love animals. But loving cute little lambs, then having to slit their throat. Too realistic. I was made for softer more theoretical occupations. ?

My farming does not involve raising livestock for slaughter.

Is very true, doing a well paid job one hates would be aweful.
Many jobs are in detail boring and repetitive, but it is the people one is working with or who one meets that make it interesting and enjoyable.

When I was about to graduate from the technical institute, I was 30 years old, so much older than my classmates. My priorities were quite different from theirs. Their focus was on salary but mine not so much.

We were discussing job opportunities and they were commenting that Phoenix, AZ was the place to go. Phoenix at the time was growing fast and there were a lot of good paying opportunities in the area.

I told them that salary was actually a bit low on my list of priorities and this was my list in order.
  1. Where would I have to live. They couldn't likely pay me enough to live in the desert unless it was so much that I could retire and move away from the desert within a year or two. For me it would be totally miserable to live there.
  2. My job responsibilities. If I am not happy doing the work that would be miserable and there's no point in doing that.
  3. Health care. Salary can be a bit lower if health care is included. My last employer provided us with a pretty good health care plan but it wasn't totally paid for. The employer paid 2/3 of the premiums and my portion for my family plan was about $550.00 per month. That's about $13,000.00 per year my employer added to my compensation package and that does not include our dental, eye care, and mental health benefits.
  4. Vacation/personal time plan. We all need to be able to take time off for family or personal reasons. My last employer gave us 40 hours after our first six weeks service and 80 hours per year after our fist year of service. After five years it was increased to 120 hours per year. After 10 years it was increased to 160 hours per year. After 15 years it was increased to 200 hours per year. And, after 20 years it was increased to 208 hours per year. We were able to take personal time by the hour and we could use the hours before we actually earned them. Naturally, if we left the company and owed for unearned hours used, we would have to pay the difference. We could also carry forward 280 earned hours into the next year. Take your salary and multiply by those hours of personal time each year and it added up to a significant amount added to the compensation package.
  5. Salary. This is where my salary fit in my list of priorities.

My current job was good until recent changes to managerial personnel and policy shift, make me not keen to go to work.
I did actually look forward to going to work for the first 2 years. The key was that the manager gave me a wide berth. The client was happy.
The client is still happy but the current manager decided we all needed to work much harder in less time. Kind of an efficiency measure. Probably covid related. But the result is daily pressure. " Oh and can you do this oh and don't forget that oh and please please make sure you do this....
"reading emails like that every second day...sheesh

I wouldnt go that far, there is the ideal job, its usually a hobby. For example my paid jobs are jobs i like but they are not ideal, however what i do in my free time is a job i absolutely love doing. I do not tell people what i actually do, because i like keeping it to myself. It makes what i do so special.
