Notre Dame has been buring for hours.
Scaffolding that had been set-up for renovations caught fire
and now the entire church is engulfed in flames.
It no longer looks like Notre Dame.

Sacred objects have been removed from the church.
Until now nothing was done to extinguish the flames.
Right now they're saying on the news that choppers or planes
could not be used....

I'm very sad indeed.

Will we ever see this again?:

I do believe that I read a little while ago that the fire stopped now but yes it's sad indeed even though I don't live in Paris and I've never even been there before. It's still sad though. Very sad. :sad

Sad indeed...
I thought about my Mom, I am glad she is in heaven, she would had been heart-broken.
Her old stomping grounds.
Been standing since medieval times.
Beautiful building, all that stained glass, and art work.
Just so sad..
It is probably, kinda like, the landscape without the twin towers.
Will look so different..
Glad no one was hurt..
They say, if they used helicopters to put out the fire, it would collapse the roof, which it did anyhow.

Did your mother like to visit there or something?

Over here the news said that if they used dumped from a plane, it would have caused more damage than the fire...and it would have caused the material that it's built of to crumble, or change in some way. I was so upset, I could hardly follow the news.

I think the skyline without the Twin Towers was more distressing...I was in NY in 2002. The towers were visible even from Northern Queens where some of my family still lives, and it was depressing to see the difference (from around the Shea Stadium area the Towers were visible).

I've also seen Notre Dame more than once and I understand what fell and the damage. Yes, your mom would have shed some tears...It will never be the same. It took 200 years to build.
Macron said he plans to rebuild it. We'll see.

Sacred objects were removed from the Cathedral while it was burning. All art, as you said.

Some are wondering if it was purposefully set...

It strikes me that the damage was mainly the roof burnt off and the structure inside looks largely the same.

If you see pictures the wooden roof is gone, but the stone vaulted ceiling is largely still intact. I think it will be a blessing in disguise and money raised will actually restore a building that was starting to fall down.

It could be the fire actually saved its future.

the little bit of news i read on it said there was a restoration effort underway, and that may have somehow started the fire. thankfully, right now, it does -not- appear to have been set ablaze, intentionally...so there's hope for humanity, yet.

salma hayek's husband (probably not spelled correctly) is a french billionaire, and he's pledged all kindsa $$$ to make the restoration happen.

Also an American billionaire pledged 100 million dollars.
Do you know who?

Macron said he plans to have it rebuilt in 5 years.
It's like putting a broken vase back together, but it's better than loosing it altogether.

Those two round, huge, stained glass windows are safe.
Paintings and statues can be restored.
The fire started 30 minutes after all the workers had left the church.

It will probably be a heater that was left on by mistake, or an electrical fault next to some flammable liquid used to clean up paint or oil spills. In the UK they had a fire in one of the cathedrals and now have strict rules as to how to isolate risks and limit the chances of it happening, which probably were never in place at Notre Dame.

The restoration work is not going to be able to replace what was lost.
The artisans and craftsmanship that created it are long dead.
The hand tooled carvings of cornices and reliefs are all done by CNC machinist today... sorry but it's not the same.

I can buy chocolate chip cookies or I can make them with love by scratch...which is better? The same thing applies when it comes time for high end trim carpentry work.
It's a labor of love. Master Craftsman just don't exist like that anymore.

When this place was built it wasn't built for electricity or central heat and air conditioning. The IEC codes and regulations are almost as difficult to pass as the NEC codes(USA). I happen to know both because of my non-profit. American codes are going overboard currently.
So I'm sure that something that regularly would work was rigged abnormally and the system got compromised. Old buildings have "bubba" fixing stuff in interim periods. Maintenance men are usually the culprit of going outside of codes. And it's a big guess as to what was done.

With the old layers of laquor and varnish the place will go quick and be very flammable outside the norm of modern products.

They say that some of the statues were already out for restoration before the fire.
I hope it wasn't on purpose.
So sad..

What I find amazing is something made 800 years ago is still so appreciated.
I saw a program about how the romans used to live in Rome, and it was a different
technology but not that different from today. Things have changed around us but not how we operate and function. It helps us to connect over thousands of years, which is so long, yet Gods word speaks right to our hearts, Amen.

I agree it is very sad and praise God nobody got hurt. It appears to have been a complete and utter accident but as well all already know we shouldn't be deceived by appearances. Doesn't the Bible even mention something like that? Anyways I was debating whether or not to mention this out of respect but actually I think it's sort of a tribute to the tragedy. See just about everybody on here already knows that I'm a major Disney fan and I love The Hunchback of Notre Dame and how the message is all about the acceptance of others. :)

My favorite song in there is the opening piece "The Bells of Notre Dame." So considering that those bells will never really ring the same way again, I figured it would be pretty powerful right now if I did post it. Especially since it was also a pretty powerful moment in the movie. There's also another video that I'm posting for informative purposes but I applaud Disney for how they projected this moment. :clap

Oh and here is a livestream right now of the aftermath.
