Our little pooch passed on today...

:crying:

Hey folks.

It is a sad day for me and my wife. What started out as a routine teeth cleaning for our old dog ended up as heart failure and him passing on.

My wife has owned him since he was a few weeks old and he would have been 17 in November.

Luckily the doctor was keeping him alive by hand pumping his heart from outside the body until my wife and I could get there to say goodbye.

We don't have any kids and he was such a good little dog (mine for 10 of those years)...gosh, I'm tearing up right now.

Anyway, if you could pray for my wife, she sure did love Smudge and is taking it very hard. To top it all off we have been under the pressure of moving out of our house.

It will be very difficult to cope for the next little while.

Hey,

I'm really sorry to hear that...it's a painful thing to go through. I can relate, because my dog of nearly 12 years passed away a few weeks ago (and we were going through a move as well). I hope you're finding the strength to cope, and I will indeed pray for your wife.

God bless,
Ted

Guibox, I can feel your pain. I just love animals, especially dogs. May the God of Heaven grant you peace in the name of Jesus.

May God bless, golfjack

Hi guibox,

I will pray for you, and your wife. I am so sorry that you lost your little dog. The Lord bless you both, and I pray that the move goes smoothly.

Hey guibox

We can all argue theology until the cows come home and get no place. But, when it comes to those special creatures that God created to become our earthly friends - pets - there IS no debate. Over the years I've loved and lost several pets and my eyes well up with tears when I think of how you're affected by the loss of your friend. Yes, I AM a 'softie' when it comes to animals. It's tough. But, if it's any consolation at all, MANY on this board can empathize with your loss since we've experienced similarly at some time or another. You loved Smudge and he knew it. What a fortunate dog. Take heart ...you'll make it!

I'm so sorry for your loss, Guibox...that's got to be a tough blow, and at such a bad time, too.

I empathize. I've loved and lost many pets. He sounds like a great dog, with a loving family. May God help you pull through this heartbreaking time.

Joudie.

Oh, I'm so sorry for your loss. Yes, pets are just like family, they love us unconditionally, they are always there with tail wagging, and happy smile on their face, always accepting us, never holding a grudge, loving us so much,
even when they're saying goodbye to us.
Yes, a loving pet is a gift from God, I think, to show us what we all need, and what we all should show to other humans, especially those in our family.

What might help your wife, in her grief, is to go to this place:
http://www.dogster.com/
look to the left, click on the link that says We Miss You!
read the bios, and if you sign up, IT IS FREE TO BE ON DOGSTER, BTW,
you can read the Dogster Forums true stories under "when it's time to say goodbye"

(You can also see my dog's page, Peppy the Chihuahua, if you want.
I write a few diary entries, but, not much lately. Here's her link, in dogster:
http://www.dogster.com/?228579.)
You can leave a bone for Peppy. She's lonely, I'm sure.

Doggone it - that's a good age for a pooch.

I used to breed dogs (german shepheds) for a few years and still have the brood bitch and one of her boys left. You become so attached to them and when the kids grow up with them they do become another member of the family against which you count the years and other milestones.

In a little while, a new pup can do wonders to help work through the loss.

Hey what happened there? I just went to check how my post went and the wording has been changed. Oh - I see - I used the word that is used for a female dog and 'Jesus Love Me' has been inserted instead. Mmmm - Oh well.

Thank you guys very much for your prayers and sympathy. I had a breakdown last night as I was e-mailing my family about it. Continue to pray the Lord's strength in our lives. Thanks, all!

Yes, the sad thing is, is that this was so unexpected. He was fine and normal before he went in. He still had the agility of a pup (his hearing was starting to go and he had mild cataracts but other than his heart murmur, he was still a pup at heart and I think had a few more years in him), that is the sad thing and I know my wife blames herself a bit for insisting that he get the remaining teeth pulled.

As far as another dog, that would be like replacing another kid. We have a cat we brought home 3 years ago so that is our other child now. We like to travel and replacing our little dude would not only seem wrong, but it would tie us down even more than when we had Smudge.

A similar thing happened to me some time ago when I announced my fear of cockroaches on some weird thread. I'll just see if it happens this time. Okay, concentrate on the word 'cockroach'. (Hope it doesn't make a liar out of me).

Anyway, to get back on track. We know what you're going through, guibox, but time is a great healer. God bless both you and your wife and may the healing come as rapidly as possible.

Quibox my heart breaks for you. I love my dogs like they are my children. My girls gerbils of 3 years just recently died and that alone was hard on all of us. I can't imagine what it will be like when we lose one of our dogs. I currently have two laying behind me on the floor and the other is asleep in the bedroom. Our one is already 15 years old and while she is currently in good health (except for being deaf), I know that she will probably be gone within the next 2 years and that thought kills me.

I am so sorry though. Let the tears flow. It's completely normal and shows just how much you loved your dog. (((hugs)))

We are managing alright. We picked up his ashes on Friday in a beautiful wooden box with his name on a plaque. Our vets office has been so wonderful through this and have gone out of their way for us. Smudge was a 'celebrity' there, being so old and having survived cancer 5 years ago.

Slowly we are getting over it. It has only been the last day or so that my wife doesn't tear up out of the blue. When I think about him I get sad but when I am kept busy, I don't think about him much.

Thanks again for all your prayers and kindness, folks. I have told many people that out of all the forums I have posted on, this forum is the best one for Christian folks and good, wholesome theological discussion.

You're all the best!
