Ok these versus confuse me as to why Paul says he's a Jew one place Then a roman in another. Why did Paul say these things?

Acts 16
37 But Paul said to them, "They have beaten us openly, uncondemned Romans, and have thrown us into prison. And now do they put us out secretly? No indeed! Let them come themselves and get us out."

38 And the officers told these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Romans.

Then in Acts22 he says:

Acts 22
3"I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, taught according to the strictness of our fathers' law, and was zealous toward God as you all are today

22 And they listened to him until this word, and then they raised their voices and said, "Away with such a fellow from the earth, for he is not fit to live!" 23 Then, as they cried out and tore off their clothes and threw dust into the air, 24 the commander ordered him to be brought into the barracks, and said that he should be examined under scourging, so that he might know why they shouted so against him. 25 And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said to the centurion who stood by, "Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and uncondemned?"

26 When the centurion heard that, he went and told the commander, saying, "Take care what you do, for this man is a Roman.

27 Then the commander came and said to him, "Tell me, are you a Roman?" He said, "Yes."

28 The commander answered, "With a large sum I obtained this citizenship." And Paul said, "But I was born a citizen."

29 Then immediately those who were about to examine him withdrew from him; and the commander was also afraid after he found out that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.

He was born a roman citizen but had Jewish heratiage is what i am lead to believe...

Paul a jew or a roman

auntie,
I decided to see if I could find the city he was born in. I found this web page about Paul but if Im reading it right it was taken over by Greeks , then the Romans but the time frame I dont think was right for him to be a Roman citizen at that time.
Im not saying your wrong , because I have trouble with time lines so you read it and see what you think. Thanks for the imput.

Jason,
Thanks for your input also , you could be right on that, maybe he being a Christian made him neither jew nor roman. I still am puzeled by his statments.

I am just going by the fact the Bible tells us he was a romans citizen and as the bible is the inspired word of God i believe it to be true.....you will also find he was bought up as a roman lawyer and had to be roman to be in that profession at that time.

You are simply confusing two different concepts and creating a fale dilemma for yourself.

Paul was a Jew from the trible of Benjamin. He was also a citizen of the Roman empire.

It is like saying you are a Swede by blood but an American citizen.

Paul a jew or roman

Adams son.\,
I wasn't trying to make a false delema for myself. I just wanted an anserw as to why he said he was both.

auntie,

I thank you agian for the information. :)

Can a man be a British Citizen AND a Jew?

Can a man be a US citizen and be a Jew at the same time?

I believe so.

Why couldn't a Jew be a citizen of the Roman Empire?

Paul a jew or a roman

eveanman,

Excuse me but I wasnt thinking in those terms because i had no idea if were Paul was born was in the Roman empire or not. You know if he was or not??

I am of the understanding he was born in rome...but i cannot remember where i got that from...

Paul was indeed both. Paul was clearly Jewish because he was a Pharisee. Paul was also clearly Roman based on what history tells us of how he was placed under house arrest and not instantly killed. The Romans would not have been as nice to Paul if he was not a citizen.

paul a jew or roman

Thank you auntie, and Brutis ,

Now Ive got it straight, I like to be sure of something if I dont understand it , this will do it thanks again. :biggrin

Paul was clearly Jewish because he was a Pharisee.

Paul was a Pharisee, so he would have had to have been a Jew. Just in case anyone was under any illusions. Being a Pharisse didn't make him a Jew--being a Jew enavbled him to become a Pharisee.
