I have to giggle at my family a bit this morning, because my husband and sons are all so excited to be outside working. I am listening to the riding lawn mower rev up right now! I was just thinking, why do men (and boys) love power tools so much? My theory is that they feel like they have super powers when they are using them.

I guess it could be power, but I see more as just fun!!

I like working chain-saws, jig saws,etc..I'm even a machinist by trade. :)

I get the same "fun rush" from shooting guns at target practice. Ever watch those shows on discovery where they blow stuff up? They have a show where they turn a car into a war-machine and battle other cars...fun fun fun!!!! :biggrin

For me it's not so much the tool as it is what I can do with them. I'm a tinkerer, hobbyist.
To put things into perspective I don't really want the drill as much as I want the hole. :biggrin
Tools are means to satisfy the urge of creativity. Repairing things around the home is another big motivation for men.
I honestly believe men have an instinct to provide a home whether for themselves (single) or for their mate. I know as a kid I had a keen interest in treehouses or even a simple clearing in dense underbrush when I was too young to build anything.

When I see a well equipped shop ( metal, wood ) it feels like a blank sheet of paper enabling me to let my imagination run. Tools to me are simply an extension, the enabling factor, of that imagination.

I like to create things too...and then blow them up!!

I was field artilery in the army national guard for 9yrs. MLRS,155mm howitzer, and paladins, also 155mm platform. I shot full auto 50cal,full auto m249,m16a2, full auto m60(out of date now),and full auto mk-19(30mm belt fed grenade launcher). :biggrin :biggrin :biggrin :biggrin :biggrin :biggrin :biggrin

Now, all I have are small arms..... :sad

I do find it amazing what some people can create with a few tools. :shades

Who? What? Where? Huh?

j/k dear Brian, but I think you just proved lovely's original point! :biggrin

I think it is fun to obtain some kind of power. I like playing risk because i can conquer the world and rule my way. There is just something fun about chasing success.

I love that game!! There are variations of it ya know?

I also like to play chess. :)

My sons also love Risk. They play with some other boys at church almost weekly. I think you are right, Tim, they love to conquer.

Yeah... it's all fun and games until something breaks down :mad

Let's see.. just this weekend.
1. Replaced solenoid on riding lawn mower
2. New solenoid was defective (Love the "Made in China")
3. Replaced solenoid on riding lawn mower again.
4. roto Tiller wouldn't start. Tore apart carb. Diapham was worn.
