Hi all -

First, my parents need prayer for upcoming surgery, potential cancer and recurring issues that are the result of side effects from medication that can't be discontinued at this point.

Second, in my career change path - (Praise) I passed all four sections my test on my first try! I'm working on applying for jobs now and already had one interview. My lack of recent experience in the field could be an issue and I also found out that a reference from my current employer is going to be required. This means I'm going to have to take a risk and tell my current (toxic) employer that I'm planning to leave before having another position secured. There is a chance I can stay for a bit to train a replacement but its unlikely they'll keep me on for long.
I'm very ready to move on, but its scary and uncertain.
I'm praying that this will all work out in the right timing.

Your prayers would be much appreciated!

I'm not an expert, but I will try to help you thing through this task.

Asking for a recommendation from a current employer can be tricky, even if the current work environment is friendly. If you have a supervisor that likes you, and is happy with your work, she might be willing to recommend you. Asking someone who dislikes you for a recommendation is likely to lead to a refusal, or even a counter productive evaluation of your work skills. Supervisors don't automatically recommend people. Some supervisors don't consider it to be part of their job. You are asking someone to vouch for your good work habits and skills. Some supervisors prefer to be asked several weeks in advance, so they have time to prepare a recommendation in a relaxed manner when they are not busy. Some employers won't allow supervisors give anything out other than attendance statistics for legal reasons. Some employers will fire people who ask for a recommendation, because they are mad that their employee is leaving. They don't want to spend any more time training them for the job, and they don't want to risk an unhappy employee making their coworkers unhappy. Some supervisors are just spiteful. Others are friendly and helpful.

Ask the Lord for wisdom. You will need it. Thoroughly think through your approach, tailoring it to the specific job situation.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. James 1:5 NKJV

Thank you for the advice!

yay, lisa!

i think its a wonderful idea, and im glad you're able+willing to puruse it. the education field needs more people who are dedicated and motivated to do something that matters. are you looking to be in the classroom, or something more administrative? if that's too personal, just don't answer.

sorry about your parents. they're in my prayers, too. :)

Thank you! I appreciate the prayers.
Classroom for now but may end up teaching a different grade. I'm trusting that God is on my side here and can put me where I need to be.
There are some issues to overcome that I'm worried about (timing of getting a new job, the pay cut, my current terrible, horrible, no good, very bad employer) but hopefully God isn't phased by any of that.

I'm trusting, scratch that . .I'm trying to trust. Its not something I'm naturally good at.

any updates? the career change situation seems like a more long term prayer request...how are the parents' health issues?
Just waiting and more waiting. Parents have appointments and test results coming up.
I've applied for a few more jobs but haven't heard back making me think this teacher shortage thing is a little hyped up. I understand they want more experienced people but everyone has to start somewhere. So I'm working on getting paperwork in to be a substitute teacher but it won't be steady pay so I'm very nervous about this. After my period of unemployment after a layoff, it feels a little foolish to quit my job for sub work that could eventually lead to a full-time teaching position. I can't do both at the same time though.
Continuing to pray for guidance.
Thanks for checking in Christ_empowered !!

hey, lisa in fl. thanks for the update. :)

im not trying to act as if I actually know much about education (LOL), but maybe a charter school? or...well, semi-locally, they have these public 'career schools,' which I think rely heavily on people with both teaching credentials and some sort of experience in 'the real world...'

so sorry about your parents, btw. im thankful that they're receiving the care they need, of course.

Hi Lisa
You've got a lot of worries at the moment, so maybe the sub job would add to them. Whatever you decide i am praying God will guide you, there may be a particular place He wants you to be. Don't lose heart, The Lord is with you.
Hope your parents tests are favourable. Praying for you all. :hug

Agreed. I'm fully expecting things to be chaotic for a while but that's what change usually does. I'm ready for change.
Thanks for the prayers for me and my parents!

They say it's always darkest before the dawn and I am praying for you and your parents that dawn will come soon for all of you and a wonderful testimony of God's glory in your lives. Always trust and never doubt as God will never leave you or forsake you and your parents. :hug
