never been big, big into his teaching, but....oh man, the controversy around him seems never ending. to be fair, though, it seems that big name Christians are targeted for a fall, more so than secular people....and they often seem to targeted by other Christians, which...is what it is, I guess. :-(

anyway, any fans out there? former fans? serious critics? Thanks. :)

I like a lot of the things that he says.

My biggest beef and concern about him has been his self promotion...he's been around since the 70's.

He waffles back and forth from liberal to conservative on some theological topics but others he is very conservative and consistent on.

i didn't know he'd been around that long. people do change, and positions change, too...personally, left leaning as I can be, im sometimes finding myself surprisingly in agreement with some 'conservative' takes on things, so...yeah. ive heard it said that a Christian worldview rubs people the wrong way all over the political spectrum.

I wasn't speaking of politics...
Theological positions is what I was referring to.
There are liberal Christian theologies and conservative Christian theologies.

Just because politics has tried to co-opt our terms doesn't make them theirs...

i have friends that like him and say his teaching is very solid

i haven't yet had the time to listen to him to judge for myself

i have my favorite teachers who make my life a blessing

my favorite teachers happen to also be televangelists who get targeted mercilessly by secular media and some christians - i know their teaching is hard to understand - but boy has my life improved as a result of finding out what they are really meaning

imo God puts different teachers out there for different people who have different needs

i don't think it is a good idea to judge someone's character based on the fact that they are famous - or based on a cursory understanding of their teachings

imo it's safer to ask God to tell us or lead us to who He wants us to learn from and then support them without attacking others

i used to think if something was God's will for me it was His will for everyone

i learned that what works for me may not work at all for others

so we should all love everyone and support those we appreciate without attacking those we don't appreciate/understand

iow the most judging we should do of other people is whether God wants us to learn from them or not

and as far as their teaching goes - we could discuss their teaching as compared to how it lines up with scripture - but i have found that if someone is an outsider they take a huge risk judging another group's teaching -

the group i now belong to i used to severely judge until God told me they had the answers to my issues - and then God patiently took almost 2 years to explain to me what these people were really saying because i disagreed with their teaching due to my theological background - yet it was my theological background that allowed my life to be a miserable one

imo it's best to promote the good things we find and avoid talking against other people and judging their christianity

if there is any specific teaching you want to discuss then that would be a profitable idea - but judging the person and his christianity i would highly warn against - because it will impact your spiritual life to judge another -

best to pray for another than to judge them or speak out against them publicly - speaking from experience - been there done that - bad news for me when i did that
