Righteousness is gained through repentance and faith in Jesus and forgiveness through the cross.

Our walk matters as the spring board from our faith.
Our walk is founded upon what is in our hearts.

So we need righteousness in our hearts.
We need righteousness in our walk.

3 righteousness steps
1. Righteousness of faith
2. Righteousness of heart
3. Righteousness of our walk

Consider Abraham: "He believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness."
Gal 3:6

Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
James 4:8

Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.
1 John 2:6

Without all three working we will fail to be Gods children.

You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus,
Galatians 3:26

So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.
Galatians 5:16

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires.
25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
Galatians 5:22-25

Can you explain what righteousness is and how we walk as Jesus walked?
Righteousness is doing things based on Jesus's love showing the fruits of the spirit.
Walking like Jesus is taking on the approaches and attitude that Jesus showed to those around Him.

Poor in spirit, mourning, meek, hungering after righteousness, merciful, pure in heart,
peacemakers. Their treasure is in heaven, they are not angry, but bless, they do not
lust after sexual desire, they love their enemies, they do their acts of righteousness in
private not for show, they pray meaningful prayers expecting the Lord hears and will
answer, they forgive from the heart, they do not worry about wealth but the Lords
ways, they do not judge but desire to help and encourage others.
Matt 5 - 7

The key issue is taking ones lead from Jesus's choices and approach, who He spoke
to and how He spoke.

A good for instance is how Jesus dealt with Judas, though he knew Judas would
betray Him he did not respond or let it change anything he did.

Thank you as I just wanted to hear your take on it. We are clothed in the righteousness of God unto good works and our fruits need to be bearing that.

Please would you say why a pagan, non-christian society should display Christian virtues?

A pagan non-Christian society can display what we call the fruits of the Spirit, but yet their display is that of their own righteousness as they are none of Christ's own.

That should be "cannot", not "can". Only those who possess the Spirit can have the fruits of the Spirit.
Righteousness is gained through repentance and faith
Righteousness is imputed through repentance and faith (which is probably what you meant). But it does not matter whether the surrounding society is wealthy or poor. All must come to Christ is the same way.

I said they can display (outward appearance) the fruits of the Spirit, but they are not God's own as what they do as far as good works, they do unto themselves and not by the will of God. It's like those who say they are Christians, but only give lip service to the Lord as they are none of His own as they have not Christ in them. It's like that of Matthew 7:21-23 as they follow their own will of doing good things for others, but Jesus knows them not.

When I read the first five chapters of Romans, it becomes apparent to me that Gods Righteousness is bound in his mercy and grace which is not to be taken for granted.

Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness. So, do we believe God is rich in mercy and grace? And like Abraham, do we believe God enough to act on that faith as a response to our belief?

This is walking how Jesus walked.

Gods Righteousness is bound in his mercy and grace which is not to be taken for granted.
Yes, none of it is to be taken for granted. But unless the righteous demands of God's justice were met at the cross, grace and mercy could not be extended to a sinful world. And that is exactly what Paul tells us.

To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. (Rom 3:26)
