How good are you at it? I usually try and to remember to turn off the lights before I leave the room so I think that I'm moderately good at it because sometimes unfortunately I forget. :neutral

Power is still generated whether I use or not .may be not locally but either from the nuke plant ,Orlando or the new cng, solar panels set up.the cost reduction is more important then enivironentalism.

Funny I was just posting a 50 year old sub station photo on fb . long live big blue

How do I save electricity?
  • I habitually turn off lights when I leave a room.
  • I rarely use more light than I need.
  • I constantly turn off lights in rooms that my family have left on. My wife and daughter can't seem to turn off a light when they leave a room so I find myself doing it for them a lot.
  • I set up our computer to go into sleep mode within 20 minutes of non-use.
  • I habitually turn off the television when I am not watching.
  • I use a timer when I plug in the engine block heater on my truck so it turns on about 1 hour before I need to start it instead of running it all night.
  • We don't have central air but use window air conditioners in the bedrooms for those uncomfortable muggy nights.
  • Related to the air conditioners, during the summer we close windows and draperies/shades during the day and open them at night along with ceiling fans so we don't have to use the air conditioning except for the few rare nights (usually about 3 or 4) where it remains unbearably muggy and warm all night. It's surprising how well this works. Yes, there are days when our home is not cool like others but it's tolerable. I sometimes think we are spoiled and unwilling to accept a little discomfort for the sake of the environment.
  • Not quite done yet but I have replaced about 90% of our incandescent lamps with LED throughout our home and outbuildings.
  • For our horses I installed an automatic waterer that uses only about 40w of heating power in the winter months. This was a huge savings from the 150 gallon steel tank with the floating heater that consumed about 1,500w.
  • During the summer and even in winter we cook outdoors on the grill a lot rather than using the electric stove.
  • We have our water heater on off-peak hot water storage control so the heater only operates during the night. Incidentally, the power company gives us a 50% reduction on the electricity for the water heater in exchange.
That's about all I can think of at the moment but I'm sure there may be others.

We have to because electric rates here in Hawai'i are sky high.
Price should not be our only motivation. Our real motivation should be the environment we depend on for our very existence. Electricity is one of the filthiest forms of power we have and our demand for it is growing constantly.

Yeah I have some too but does that mean that this kind of electricity doesn't matter?

You will be proud of me. I turned off a light switch when I went shopping a little while ago. Hooray for Michael.

Maybe they will build a statue of me to inspire future generations.

Solar isn't clean nor wind ,nuke isn't perfect but the cleanest of them.

Im not for wasting power but, about conservation.

You will, waste your savings on power by visiting any stadium in one hour .the demand of those lights alone. 308,240,with a high pk of 30kw at the least

It wasn't sarcasm. I was just being silly. It would be nice to have a statue of me.

Oh okay well my apologies then as I thought that it sounded sarcastic and rude. A lot of the time it's really hard to tell how a person is coming a crossed just by reading text. :sorry2x

Michael74, why the sarcasm?
Hey WIP,,,I don't want to get into a deep discussion about this...
BUT
Michael74 is rightly sarcastic.
I feel the same way.

I think that anything we do to save energy is good since we're running out of fossil fuel.

But why are we running out of fossil fuel?

Because we've become a society DEPENDENT on energy...
we couldn't live without it.

Look down that list that you made back there.....what have you REALLY given up?

NOTHING!

We're not willing to give up anything to save fuel...
Which is why we're looking for new methods.

We don't want to go back to the 800's.
