The First Episle of John is all about living in the light, which means (1) knowing who Christ is and what He has done for us as He died on the cross and rose from the dead, (2) loving one another, and (3) obeying God's commandments.

The OP asked if we needed to confess our sins and repent from them. Walking in the light implies that one has repented from sin. It also implies that one continues to live in a way that honors God. Grace means saying thank you for Christ's death on my behalf when I sin, and that we are turning away from what God finds to be an offensive behavior, or attitude, or thought pattern, not staying on the wrong path.
