The OP says that she no longer cares for Matthew Perry because he smokes; not because of some character flaw, but because of a habit. That just seems so superficial.

Does the girl from california smoke?

Maybe smoking IS a character flaw? I know that all winds point to me when I am having a meal...

Does anybody in this have this problem? Your religion getting in the way of your opinions and your hobbies? I have it all the time and it's bringing me down. I have also heard about the rumours that he smoked cannabis, but I know this can't be true about Matthew. He doesn't want to hurt anybody, he's a nice guy and he knows cannabis is wrong I'm sure.
I don't really consider smoking to be wrong on a religious level. I think that it's incredibly rude of people to smoke around non-smokers; I consider smoking to be a disgusting, money-wasting habit; and personally, I don't support smoking, but I don't believe smokers are bad people.

In the pictures he is smoking. This puts me in two differet minds. One the one hand I love Matthew Perry so much, but at the same time....

... SMOKING?

Are you serious, Matthew Perry? SMOKING? As a Catholic I can't understand this. It's not natural. It's harmful. It's not natural and if cigarettes existed in the Bible era then it would have been forbidden for sure. I still love him as an actor, and Three To Tango is still definitely my favourite movie, but I'm not sure if I can still love him as a person.

God views all Sin equally. How is smoking a cigarette any different than eating a big mac? Or cursing? Or anything of that nature.

It's hard to comprehend, because we can't view things the same as God does.

In the end, does it really matter?

Smoking is a deadly addiction.

well in general i have never been able to deal with women who drink even if its a moderate drinker. nor could i deal with a tree hugger. alas my wife has leaned towards this route lately.:grumpy

You poor thing! A wife who loves trees! I call my son a red neck and he calls me a tree hugger. But we have a fantastic relationship and enjoy kidding each other. I love huge trees and my husband photographs wildlife which is often associated with trees. Trees are beautiful, they recycle our CO2 and provide us with O2. I love the shade they provide, too. Now is when I break into song: I think that I shall never see: a poem as lovely as a tree. All my son wants to do is cut all my tree friends down so his human friend can go back to work.

Back to smoking. It kills off the phagocytic cells in your throat trachea bronchioles and bonchi, etc so that you cannot kill off invading bacteria and virus. If anyone has ever seen the lungs of smokers and those who live with them they might consider stopping. We bid on a house previously owned by smokers. They both died from smoking--one from lung cancer and one from emphazema. We won the bid but it took years to get the stench out. And when you are out of cigarettes & broke, and you find yourself digging for cigarette buts under the floor mats of your car, or pick them up off the street, you might realize how disgusting this addiction is.
My husband was a smoker and started me smoking for 3 years, till I got pregnant and the doctors kept telling us it was harming the baby. We both quit cold turkey at the same time back in the 60s. At that time we did not have much info on how dangerous it was. Now there is no excuse for it except stupidity.

Carolyn:

I quit too.

I guess if we are honest we kind of enjoyed it while it lasted.

But good to quit, anyway.

only in america. there talk of nearly banning smoking in public but allowing pot everwhere. yeah that makes sense.

i dont care to smoke and advise agaisnt it but one can smoke and work. not as doable with pot.

I don't really consider smoking to be wrong on a religious level.

I hope I dont make ennemies with my post here, but its just my view because of the way I was taught. I would love to hear responses on my viewpoint.

I believe that if you are addicted to smoking, it is a sin. Isn't being addicted to anything a sin? If you are addicted to something you have created an idol. You are going to that thing you are addicted to, to solve something, rather than going to God.

But just because you smoke, doesnt mean its a sin. As long as you are not smoking because you "have to have one". There are people who smoke cigars who do it on speacial occasions, or every once in a while, and that I would not consider a sin.

Corey:

I agree.

I'm glad I quit, mind.

But for some good folk, it's almost a badge of theological orthodoxy to use single-issue campaign talk against smoking, even in moderation. (As if Romans 14 doesn't apply.)

im not saying that its good just pointing the irony of the american laws. my libertarian is within me is saying let them smoke, yes they harm themselves but then what about the amount of food one eats? should we regulate that too. diabetes type 2 is simply avoidable if one maintains a proper diet and it can be reversed by diet and exercise. people die from it.

people die from sports. i can do a ton of post on studies on boxing to dementia links.

my plattoon leader and former mma fighter agrees with that. she did a paper on that and theres a ton of studies on traumatic brain injury on it.

I miss the good ol` days

We even had candy cigarettes so we could look cool too :)

In regard to the OP, it's not his religion that causes him to have a special hate smoking, except to the degree that his religion has conformed itself to the world. Smoking has become very Politically Incorrect, while other destructive behavior is ignored or offenders are even given special rights.

Smoking animals are surprisingly common at some zoos.
