Both are wonderful. The second is my favorite, as it shows the spooky, etherial impression that bird gives. What lens do you use, and how do you get close to them?

I really like the bokeh in the second one as well.

The first one seems to be a female because it is quite a bit larger than others we have seen. Both were in the same general area and were actively hunting about an hòur before sunset.

Thanks, my post froze. Anyhow, we stay in our car most of the time or use it as a blind. When they are hunting they often ignore us but we try to stay 100 or more feet away and not disturb them. Hubby has a 100-400 zoom with his canon 50D, and I ofteñ do a lot of cropping. He rarely uses a tri pod. There is a 3rd lighter colored bird in the area but it is very shy. We have few photos of it. Most of the time they are sleeping in the weeds or stubble, or else are a white dot on the horizon. Once in a while they come fròm a distance and perch fairly close to us!
