Simple Treatments for Colds, Flu, and Pneumonia

To summarise:

1) Breath deeply all day to prevent aching muscles which could lead to death.

2) Roll on your side to cough up a lung at a time of mucus, to prevent drowning.

3) Go to bed an hour earlier to increase your energy that you will need to fight with tomorrow.

4) Imagine doing exercises to increase muscle mass because your body will be using your muscles as energy.

5) Stay warm.

No cure yet exists for the common cold and flu, and a treatment to prevent coughs and sneezes is still a long way off, as is the dizzy spell after a coughing fit which can cut the amount of blood to the brain. But there are simple solutions to the problems of aching bodies, fuzzy heads, and lack of energy that can make having the common cold less debilitating. These solutions are also effective against Flu (is was used effectively in the Swine Flu outbreak in 2009) and Pneumonia. Antivirals, if offered, should still be used as well even though you will feel better. This web page is not an alternative to going to see a Doctor.

The aching that one gets with the common cold and flu is due to less oxygen getting to the muscles because breathing is being restricted, this symptom passes quickly when you increase the deepness of your breathing for a few minutes, when the muscles receive the quantity of oxygen that they need the aching stops. You will find that it is not possible to breath deeply all day, so the mind will ensure that you forget to do it when you have enough oxygen. Just simply breath deeply whenever you remember to, cease if this treatment makes you feel dizzy.

The fuzzy head is dealt with in the same way, just imagine the brain getting all the oxygen it needs while breathing deeply and it soon does, the head becomes as clear as if there were no infection. When you try this you will probably come to the conclusion that we have some control over how much oxygen gets to the brain, and perhaps that the common cold interferes with this mechanism in some way.

Lack of energy can still make the common cold and flu an unpleasant experience, but I came up with the idea of getting an extra hour of sleep the day before a football match in order to increase energy levels while still a school boy. (I used to run rings round the other players). This seems to me to be the best treatment for the lack of energy caused by the common cold.

Staying warm is vitally important, when I had double pneumonia I wanted twelve blankets to keep up my temperature.

For the coughs and sore throats that you can get with the common cold and flu a good solution seems to be runny honey.

I am an asthmatic and when I get the common cold it usually lasts for two and a half weeks, some criminals get a shorter term. I experimented with a course of Vitamin D this winter, and found that it reduced the length of the cold to just one week, which is a luxury for me.

Specifically, for those with Pneumonia, deeply breathing all the time will maximize oxygen intake in lungs flooded with mucus. Lay on one side at a time, the heavier breathing will clear one lung, then roll over and do the same to clear the other one. Family and friends should ensure that food and water are readily available whenever needed as medical staff will take them away again if not consumed due to being unconscious. I would like to have tried colostrum, which boosts the immune system, but no one was willing to get any for me when I had double pneumonia. (I had the Last Rites twice!)

I had read an article in 'New Scientist' during the 1970s that said that imagining doing exercise built muscle as much as doing the exercise, I had a long time in a hospital bed, and I spent most of it, besides concentrating on deep breathing, on imagining doing chest exercises in order to increase lung capacity. A recent study by Erin M. Shackell and Lionel G. Standing at Bishop's University reveals you may be able to make nearly identical gains in strength and fitness without lifting a finger!

That study measured the strength gains in three different groups of people. The first group did nothing outside their usual routine. The second group was put through two weeks of highly focused strength training for one specific muscle, three times a week. The third group listened to audio CDs that guided them to imagine themselves going through the same workout as the exercising group, three times a week.

The control group, who didn't do anything, saw no gains in strength. The exercise group, who trained three times a week, saw a 28% gain in strength. But, the group who did not exercise, but rather thought about exercising experienced nearly the same gains in strength as the exercise group (24%). Yes, you read that right!

The group that visualized exercised got nearly the same benefit, in terms of strength-gains, as the group that actually worked-out.

While there has been no testing to find out whether mind exercise increases lung capacity, I suggest trying it until it is disproved is the best option to take.

Prevention is better than treatment, if you hear someone coughing or sneezing, simply breath out slowly for as long as possible, the virus cannot get in while the airflow is going out. I once got this idea used in an instructional manual for use by aid agencies in the event of natural disasters, which was known as the 'black box.' It has saved many lives in disaster relief camps, and can help you too.

The bacteria and viruses that cause these infections are in the lungs all the time, but are triggered when the lungs get cold. I have an old blog that helps in this situation, which I enlarge on here: From the moment that we switch our radiators on half of the heat given off by them is lost as it goes into the wall behind them. We can, however, get around this problem with an invention from a then schoolboy that got onto the “Tomorrow’s World” program decades ago. He had learned from School that heat is given off by way of conduction, convection, and radiation, so when his Grandmother had problems meeting her heating bills the schoolboy reasoned that heat loss due to conduction and convection could be stopped by putting a lining of cardboard covered with silver cooking foil behind his Grandmother's radiators. Heat loss through the wall is now slashed, and rooms heat up faster when the heating comes on. The Fire Brigade said at the time that the cardboard was not a fire hazard as behind the radiator is the least damaged part of a room in the event of a fire. And this saving cuts the CO2 emissions of your house. I did this for many years, but now use a government endorsed product, Radflek, it is neater, it is easier to use the radiators for drying, and is less susceptible to damage.

If you only heat enough water in your kettle every day that you immediately want to use you will save enough energy to heat a room for a day, so you can have more warm rooms in your house.

Alleviating Unpleasant Tastes

While having chest infections, many people report having unpleasant tastes in their mouth, this can be treated with regular mouth-washing.

Get well soon!
