The messages of the prophets got them killed by the people. On the other hand the messages of the OT soothsayers were readily accepted by the people.

Uh, that people in general are prone to believe only the good things said to them even if they are all lies, and will reject the Truth because it is a bit more painful to deal with?

yeah, that's it.

and it hasn't changed a bit in thousands of years.
