I'm not a Sunday school teacher, but the best way to help children learn is to interact with them with the children Bible stories books with pictures. For an example I will use the story of Jonah and the well. Have them draw a picture of the story and have them say something about their picture that they have learned. Another example is have someone draw characters from the Bible that they can color and cut out and do a puppet show with the Bible characters. Keep their minds busy with various fun activities related to what story you read them.

I do not teach Sunday school, but I want to make a brief comment based on my own experiences as a child. Teach them about the God who loves them and wants to be their friend. Do not scare them with stories about what happened if they are bad. They will find out soon enough that there are consequences to their actions.

What little self-esteem I had as a child was singing the songs, "Jesus loves us. The Bible tells us so." "What a friend you have in Jesus." This little light of mine. Let it shine.":cross

How much information you disseminate depends upon the age group of the children you are teaching.
Story telling is very important but how these stories relate to modern life as a child still under their parents care is important. Empowering them with the idea that they alone have the choice about what kind of person they will grow up to be...

These sorts of things can be done in an age appropriate fashion...and will reach them.

Of course they can learn faster than most of the material that they say is for your grade level.
But...

I also found that "pop quizzes" and verse memorization were also good tools for them later in life... show them how to memorize the verses with write offs. Cheap and effective.

Give them class projects to perform as a group based on the talents in the group. (Creating unity)

There's a ton of things to do...
Mostly I found that a gamesmanship teaching method backed up by truly useful projects does wonders. Yes, some boring things interspersed for difficult items are needed...but when you have a "games" teaching method...they don't put up much of a fuss.

Hi Malcolm,,,
I DID teach our faith to children.
I liked the older ones....8 to about 11/12.

The younger kids just colored a lot and were told very simple
stories...this just wasn't for me.

A method that I found useful, no matter what age,
was purposefully to make kids think. If t hey come up with the answer
it's more probable that they will remember it.

So ask a lot of questions. As them what they THINK about something or other.

Also, very important IMO, is that they remember special occasions a lot.
For instance...at Easter and Christmas I had them do special crafts.
Cards for the parents....images for the resurrection.
The older kids got to discuss what they thought about the resurrection, for instance.

I'm sure there's a lot more I'm not thinking about right now.
I had to quit about 5 years ago.
I miss this very much.

The funny thing for me is my parents were not role models, they didnt teach me about life i learnt that by going to church and delving into the word of God for myself. My father was never there for me, and my mother needed emotional support, my grandparents didnt do much teaching. Its important to get people to read the word of themselves.
