I have applied this to my exercise routine. Seems to be a useful reminder.
I do yoga like stretches everyday. To ward off arthritis, back pain, carpal tunnel and Achilles Tendonitis.
It helps prevent RSI. Repetitive Strain Injury too.
Take a simple stretch like touching your toes. Try and hold it for 30 seconds. Some other exercises I do include calf stretches against the wall. Knees to to chest on the floor. Downward Dog and a sitting piriform is Stretch. Do you know The Plank? That's a great one for abdominals.
Also I hold my breath for two special exercises. Again 30 seconds.
a) glutes contraction
b,) abs contraction

After 40 minutes of this I feel more able to face the problems of the day, both physical and mental.

40 minutes of that would see me off.
All I do when I am ready is walk down the stairs, after spine stretching work and then feed the cats and the stray ones outside. Then I make my breakfast.
I'm impressed with your 40 minutes of 30 second exercises.

I think you need to shorten that time frame to 10 seconds. Stretching too much can actually bring problems, and so can not stretching enough. Try to find some balance.
