Genesis Three
King James Bible Par ▾

The Serpent's Deception

Genesis 7:1-5; Romans 5:12-21; 2 Peter 3:1-9)

1Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. 6And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. 7And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

God Arraigns Adam and Eve

8And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. 9And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? 10And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. 11And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? 12And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. 13And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

14And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

15And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

The Punishment of Mankind

16Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

17And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

18Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;

19In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

20And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.

The Expulsion from Paradise

21Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

22And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: 23Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. 24So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

We fall and have to get up, spiritually speaking. And it is interesting to note what the first thing that the snake said, because he still uses it today, and usually first.

The first thing the snake did was question whether God said!!!

The Lord sends His Holy Spirit to speak to our spirit, and we are called to believe!

Gen 15:1 After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying,...
Gen 15:6 Then he believed in the LORD; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness.

So it is that His sheep hear His voice and that our faith comes from that hearing a word from Him. We are thus saved by faith!

So the snake comes alone and spreads doubt, as opposed to faith, and specifically that snake of old spreads doubt as to whether God really said things to us!!

We can learn, from looking at the verses from the fall, how it is that we fall in our walk. Specifically, we pick up God speaking to us in our spirit and believe that it was Him. Then a short time later another spirit comes along getting us to doubt whether that really was the Lord speaking to us. The real problem then comes when tell ourselves that it was the Lord who spoke to us but then go and do what He asked us to not do anyway. We kind of justify it to ourselves by saying that we didn't really know if it was God.

We are called to walk by faith - a faith that does hear from Him and says that it was Him. He has put before us both good and evil and what do we choose? Maybe we don't always know what is good and what is evil but we usually do, don't we. We usually know His voice which tells us to do good, we usually know the voice that tells us to doubt. If you start choosing doubt then you have rejected good, and that because you wanted to be like God instead of follow Him. Then we wind up hiding from Him and telling ourselves He doesn't exist, though in our spirit we know He does.

That is the fall, and all because we sided with doubt.

Amen, Satan"s first step was to plant a seed of doubt in Eve"s mind concerning God"s ways ( Genesis 3:1-3). The key phrase is "from any" ( Genesis 3:1).

Satan focused Eve"s attention on God"s one prohibition. He suggested that God did not really want what was best for Adam and Eve but rather was withholding something from them that was essentially good.

He hinted that God"s line of protection was actually a line that He drew because He was selfish. Satan still tempts women to believe that God"s role for them is primarily for His benefit rather than for their welfare.

God Arraigns Adam and Eve

Genesis 3:8-13 8And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

Yes - I liked the post. We might want to be careful when thinking "tempts women" - because we are like the bride of Christ and so the temptation might not really have to do with a persons physical sex. I'm just saying that we men can easily wind up thinking that God's role for us is just for His benefit as well. I know sometimes I get to feeling that way, which is probably just the dark forces we battle with messing with me. The truth is that God doesn't really need my help but chooses to use my help for my benefit. So I love the insight shared. :)

Amen, but in the previous chapter, Genesis 2:15-25 proves that The LORD God had spoke to the man first.

For just as all people die because of their union with Adam, in the same way all will be raised to life because of their union with Christ. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive. :clap

1 Corinthians 15:22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ ...

The Fall

Great thread. Adam and Eve is a favorite study of mine.

Luke 10:18 and He said to them, `I beheld the Satan, as lightening/bright-star<796> from out of the heaven having fallen[Revelation 9:1?]
1Jo 3:8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.
==========================
Rom 5:14 but the death did reign from Adam till Moses, even upon those not having sinned in the likeness of Adam's transgression, who is a type of him who is coming.

2Co 11:3 But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity[fn] that is in Christ.
1Co 15:45 so also it hath been written, 'The first man Adam became a living creature,' the last Adam is for a life-giving spirit,
1Ti 2:13 for Adam was first formed, then Eve,
1Ti 2:14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman, having been deceived, into transgression came,
1Ti 2:15 and she shall be saved through the child-bearing, if they remain in faith, and love, and sanctification, with sobriety
====================================
Both Adam and Eve suffered the same fate, [tho it appears there is no record of Eve dying?]

At some point in the past….In all due seriousness, the Bible doesn't mention a year of death of Eve or any other indication of how long she may have lived.
Gen 5:5 So all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years; and he died.

  • PEOPLE ALSO ASK

    How old was Eve when she died?
    Is Eve silent on death?

  • Back | Home | Next. Eve died of a weakened heart at 511 years of age, Adam of old age at 530. They were both buried in the center of the temple of divine service which had been built in accordance with their plans. This was the origin of the practice of burying noted and pious men and women under the floors of places of worship. (76:5.5)

  • However, the Bible is silent on Eve’s death. But it is implied that Eve was Adam’s only wife: And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

I kept hearing that it was Eve that was tempted. Why did Adam eat the fruit if he was not tempted by the lust of the eyes? Eve saw that the tree was good for food and pleasant to the eye.
Good question, Could be that they both were there to be tempted, but I think they still disobeyed of what the LORD had said.

How do you see it about your question?

Though the serpent tempted Eve, it was the appeal of the tree and fruit that lured Eve in. She desired it because it was pleasant to her eyes. Adam saw the tree and fruit and it was pleasant to his own eyes, thus having a bit from what Eve gave him.

The devil may put doubts in our mind "but every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death." James 1:14-15.

If the lust was not there, and the tree was not attractive, I think Eve and Adam would have been put off eating the fruit.

Amen, good point, just as anything could be in our path, but it do not mean it is good for us.
