I was having lunch with a pastor friend of mine today, and he told me of a member of his church that eventually left his church because my friend would not discourage those who believed in gay marriage from attending church or tell them they weren't welcome to attend. It had nothing to do with my friend believing in gay marriage, because he didn't, but that he didn't want to discourage those who believed in gay marriage from hearing what the church and the Bible had to say.

The church member was furious, and left because he couldn't comprehend that those with beliefs contrary to scripture are the very ones that we should invite and permit to come and hear the gospel!

That's really sad, you know. I feel that it shouldn't be necessary for anyone who loves the Lord to become fed up with a church .. but of course we know it happens.

If a pastor is really doing service to the ones who come to him, they would be learning why gay marriage is not biblically sound, and nobody would be accusing the pastor of avoiding the topic. John 6:37 comes to mind in contrast to John 6:65-66.

It is interesting that many of the most troubled sorts of people are drawn to Christianity, because their insecurity craves a healing touch and intuitively they know Jesus Christ is trustworthy - but it is sad that despite their attending regularly, sometimes for years, (and sometimes becoming part of the church), they seem to never really find their healing there.

Sometimes a pastor will water-down their teaching so as to not offend those who would be offended, and in that way they prevent giving strength to the conviction of the truth (while ironically it means they are giving strength to fear of confrontation even without having encountered the threat!). I could imagine if had been a case of that where the other guy had not been able to convince the pastor to bring forth a conviction of the truth that might make those ones uncomfortable, then he'd not want to be associated any more where a church is making sinners feel comfortable in their sinfulness (eg: 2 Corinthians 4:2, 2 Corinthians 2:17, 2 Peter 2:3 and 2 John 1:10-11).

Though, unless I were to hear your pastor friend, there's no way I could be sure whether he is teaching reliably or not. It's a good topic for discussion and an excellent case in point, thanks for sharing that!

I can't get the link to work....

Doug
I just updated the forum software Saturday and it’s not playing nice with the software that integrates with Wordpress.
I hope to update the bridge sometime this week, and the continue reading link should work again as well as editing....
