The New Junk Food Danger—Dementia?

Not only does junk food make you fat, but it could cause dementia. New research shows that our calorie-laden diet boosts risk for dementia, a memory-robbing disorder some experts now call “type 3 diabetes.â€
“Americans are literally eating a ‘diabetes diet’ that’s very toxic to the brain and other vital organs,†says Dr. Joel Zonszein, medical director of the diabetes clinic at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City. “And the one of the most terrible complications—brain damage—is occurring in younger and younger patients.â€
In fact, a shocking new study reports that teenagers who eat a diet that’s high in fat and calories already show “accelerated cognitive decline.†The researchers blame rising rates of dementia on our increasingly unhealthy eating habits and couch potato lifestyle.
The Insulin Connection

While it’s long been known that type 2 diabetics are at higher risk for memory loss, another new study found that damage to key brain areas involved in memory and cognitive skills starts when blood sugar hits the high end of the “normal†range, even when other risk factors, such as smoking, high blood pressure, and alcohol consumption are taken into account.
The two studies reveal the hazards of a pre-diabetic condition called insulin resistance (IR), which tends to strike people who have a large waistline (even if their weight is normal), eat a poor diet, and spend long hours sitting in front of a computer (or the TV), says Dr. Zonszein.

Link to Alzheimer’s Disease

Another new study found that both IR and diabetes contribute to formation of a type of brain plaque linked to Alzheimer’s disease, the memory-stealing disease that affects 5.4 million Americans.
In the August 25 issue of Neurology, Japanese scientists wrote, “adequate control of diabetes might contribute to a strategy for the prevention of Alzheimer's disease.†Several clinical trials are now testing the effects of medication to improve insulin sensitivity in older people with cognitive impairment to see if this approach helps protect the brain.

What’s the link between a poor diet and dementia? “Junk food contributes to both central adiposity and chronic inflammation that damages small and large blood vessels that supply the brain,†says Dr. Zonszein. That’s dangerous, since microvessel disease is the leading cause of dementia.
Although people with big bellies have lots of fat cells, adds Dr. Zonszein, “their cells are very inefficient in the metabolic process (converting food into energy to power the body). As a result, fat is stored in places it shouldn’t be, such as the liver and heart, and rising levels of blood sugar start to injure the brain.†In addition, people with IR have lower levels of HDL, the good cholesterol that helps keep the heart and brain healthy.
A Dangerous Gang of Metabolic Villains

“We’re now seeing diabetic patients as young as 50 with significant brain damage—and the new research is telling us that people with insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome are at much higher risk for dementia than was previously believed,†notes Dr. Zonszein.
About 50 million Americans, many of whom are undiagnosed, have metabolic syndrome--a gang of five cardiometabolic thugs that quintuple a person's risk for type 2 diabetes and triple it for heart attack. By definition, everyone with metabolic syndrome has insulin resistance. If you have three of more of the following disorders, you have metabolic syndrome:

  • A large waistline (above 40 inches for a man or 35 inches for a woman). This also is called "an apple shape."
  • High triglycerides: a level of this blood fat that’s above 150 mg/dL
  • Low HDL (less than 50 mg/dL for women and less than 40 mg/dL for men). HDL is the good cholesterol that keeps the heart and brain healthy. In fact, some research indicates that HDL is the best “food†for the brain.
  • High blood pressure: 130/85 mmHg or higher (or you’re on blood pressure medicine).
  • High fasting blood sugar: 100 mg/dL or above (or you're on medicine to treat high blood sugar).
How to Protect Your Brain

The good news is that the right diet, regular exercise—and keeping your weight down—dramatically reduce risk for metabolic syndrome and diabetes, which in turn helps lower risk for dementia.
“Most people with insulin resistance graze all day on high-calorie foods,†says Dr. Zonszein. “What they should do is eat three heart-healthy, low-fat meals a day with colorful fruits and vegetables, high-fiber whole grains, and lean protein, such as fish or chicken, on their plate.â€

Also limit—or better still, avoid—sweet drinks, including fruit juice and sports drinks. A recent study shows that high-fructose sweeteners, in particular, may be driving the development of brain-harming microvessel disease.
This sweetener, ubiquitous in processed foods, appears to boost levels of a cell-damaging toxin called uric acid, the researchers report, magnifying risk for vascular dementia, chronic kidney disease, stroke, and heart disease.

The dementia thing and arteriosclerosis go hand in hand. It's the same machanism except affecting different parts of the body. I also believe that cancer and heart disease are related, i.e. the same nefarious variables at work. You never hear someone say in church, pray for so-and-so who has cancer of the heart. You never hear of it, but you do hear of arteriosclerosis. That's how these things affect the heart, in other places it grows tumors as cancer.

The bottom line is that whatever we are eating it makes degeneration work a lot faster with no healthy cell replacement and bad cells take over. You need good nourishment to regenerate. And this is one of my bones I repeat over and over. While "they" supposedly do not want you to eat junk food, they replace it with equally processed foods (ya know like "put a little love into your heart" margarine) and ALSO place some natural foods into the junk category and people have been dutifully doing that and are sicker than ever.

A good example: McD's hamburgers are not that healthy. If you asked me, I'd say it's the additives, perhaps wrong fat additives, fillers, chemicals, hormones, etc etc Supposedly you can let it out in the open and it would just mummify instead of rotting. But "they" think McD's hamburgers are bad because of the saturated fats and salt. So, if you drained all the fat out, and all the salt out, replaced it with MORE fillers such as Soy, they would then think it's now healthy and I would say that is worse than ever. And at the same time, if I made a juicy grass-feed cattle burger but it had some saturated fat, they would put that in the same category as an unhealthy McD's burger.

They don't tell you much what to eat, but what to avoid, and as a result people are avoiding good foods as well thinking they are bad and the populace is more nutritionally deficient than ever.

If all this JUNK we eat is so bad for us why do we live longer?

A good diet to me reads like

real butter etc ...meat ... veggies..whole grains... not necessarily in that order...

A whole grain burger bun butter spred and grilled with no more than 1/3 pound of good rare hambuger a slice of real cheese. pick your veggies...lettuce.. tomato avocado.. onions ONLY dill pickles ....depending on which cheese sprouts are good

Okay, Reba..... now you've made me hungry! And it's far too late in the evening for me to eat anything!

We don't. They want you to believe that. In the past, people died of infection and disease more (outside influence) or accidents such as war or maybe birth defects, not degenerative ones such as arteriosclerosis were extremely uncommon. Same with cancers. If one was healthy in youth, they made it to a very late age.

However, if one makes it to the biblical three score and ten, and then die, I would say they fulfilled a full lifetime.

If you look at the bible you see the age of mankind deteriorates in history --- from the times men lived to be 900 years old down to King David's three score and ten. Now you hear of 40-something people dropping over from cancer, way too young, and not because ol' Amos got caught in farm machinery while plowing or picked up some infection they did not know what to do with.

In the apocryphal books, the angels spoke to Ezra about the earth growing old and deteriorating just like a person gets older. So, not only is man straying further from the truth (and dying sooner), but there's environmental factors at work decreasing his age.

BIBLICAL DISEASES

There are various kinds of diseases in the world today.
To understand today's ailments we must go back to where it all began,
and find out what the bible says about it.

1. KINDS OF DISEASES IN THE BIBLE

Atrophy ( Job 16:
icon_cool.gif

Blindness ( Matt 9:27)
Boil ( 2 King 20:7)
Boils ( Ex 9:10)
Consumption ( Duet 28:22)
Deafness ( Mark 7:32)
Dropsy ( Luke 14:2)
Dumbness ( Matt 9:32)
Depentiery ( 2 Chr 21:12-19)
Epilepsy ( Matt 4:24)
Fever ( Matt 8:14-15)
Flow Of Blood ( Matt 9:20)
Inflammation ( Duet 28:22)
Insanity ( Dan 4:33)
Itch ( Duet 28:27)
Leprosy ( 2 Kings 5:1)
Paralysis ( Matt 4:24)
Plaque ( 2 Sam 24:15-23)
Scab ( Duet 28:27)
Sores ( Luke 16:20)
Tumors ( 1 Sam 5:6,12)
Weaknesses ( Ps. 102:23)

2. NOW WE SEE WHAT BIBLICAL DISEASES ARE,
HERE ARE SOME OF THE CAUSES:

A. MAN'S ORIGINAL SIN ( Gen 3:16-19)
* Ancestral sins of Adam and Eve
* Man's choices brings sin and diseases into the world
* Our fleshly lusts birth diseases

B. MAN'S ACTUAL SIN ( 2 Chr 21:12-19)/2 King 5:25-27)
* Our actual sins bring disease

C. SATAN'S AFFLICTIONS ( Job 2:7/Luke 13:6)
* Satan reaps wrath on our flesh

D. GOD's SOVEREIGN WILL ( John 9:1-3/2 Cor 12:7-10)
* We must accept sometimes he just has his reason

3. WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT CURES?

A. GOD ( 2 Chr 16:12/Ps. 103:2-3)
We refuse to turn to God and turn to man 1st in today's society.
We should turn to him 1st for healing, the bible says we have not
because we ask not!

B. JESUS ( Matt 4:23-24)
Jesus literally healed the sick while he was walking amongst us,
he still has the same power, we just have to use his name!

C. PRAYER ( Acts 28:8-9/James 5:14-15)
Other prayers of the righteous have healing powers, we should look
to our elders for prayer and our christian friends and family!

D. BY THE USE OF MEANS ( Is 38:21-Luke 10:34
God gives man the ability to heal with medicines and surgeries-
we should remember that anything that is good is of God,
surgeries and medicine saves lives so of course its God's
gift to us!
HE ALLOWS US THE INTELLIGENCE TO CREATE REMEDIES THAT
SOOTH OUR AILMENTS.

Today's medicines and surgeries can be used for good or bad-
it is up to us to know the bible and make godly choices of what is
best for us. There is a difference between necessities and wants,
it is up to us to be godly in all we do-or choose!

Nice list there Lewis. Like I stated, most are disease, some birth defects. They did not know hygiene or disease prevention back then which admittedly, we are a little better at knowing about today, at least common diseases. Not much arteriosclerosis, cancer or other types of degenerative diseases we have today. I'll be nice about high cholesterol and high blood pressures and won't make a judgement about that. That's because they could not measure it back then and very well may have been high. However, I believe these two examples are "numbers" diseases and therefore invented. Whether they had it or not, still not much arteriosclerosis and cancers because their diet was no doubt natural and what God gave in the case of the Israelites. If they died early, it's because they ate a bad fish maybe. :lol

if i want to snack, i'd rather snack on a cucumber or tomatos. fruit and berries are better than candy, too(though berries are more expensive than fruit/veggies). a cucumber costs a bit less than a mars or snickers and its a lot more refreshing to eat too. generally, candy and trash food are a lot more expensive than stuff that is more tasty and refreshing.

also, screw light sodas.

these stats are incredible. i know any carbonated drinks also cause bone problems, as they deplete the body of calcium.
