(197) Do not swear by heaven or earth or any other oath but let your "yes" be "yes" and "no" be "no" lest you fall into condemnation. (James 5:12)

(198) Pray when you are afflicted. Sing hymns and songs when you are happy. (James 5:13)

(199) Pray over the sick person anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord and the Lord shall heal him/her. (James 5:14,15)

(200) Confess your faults to one another, and pray for one another, that inward healing may happen. (James 5:16-18)

(201) Be ye holy as our God is holy. (1 Peter 1:16)

(202) See that you love one another with a pure heart fervently. (1 Peter 1:22)

(203) New Christians, lay aside all hatred, all cunningness and hypocrisy, jealousy and all evil speakings and desire the sincere milk of the Word of God, that you may grow thereby. (1 Peter 2:1-2)

(204) Submit yourself to every rule of a king or a Government Authority for the Lord's sake. (1 Peter 2:13-16)

(205) Honour all men. Love the fellowship of brothers and sisters in Christ. Fear God. Honour the Leader of the Nation. (1 Peter 2:17)

(206) Servants, be submissive to your Masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle Masters but also to the froward Masters. (1 Peter 2:18-20)

(207) Wives, be submissive to your own husbands and if any obey not the Word of God, they may be won by your good and loving behaviour. Adorn yourselves with a meek and quiet spirit which is very valuable in the sight of God. (1 Peter 3:1-6)

(208) Husbands, love and give honour unto your wives for they are heirs of grace of life like you. (1 Peter 3:7)

(209) All of you, be of one mind, having compassion and love on one another, sympathetic and courteous. (1 Peter 3:8)

(210) Be ready always to give an answer to every human being that asks you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear, having a good conscience so that the evil doers who speak evil of you, may be ashamed, that falsely accuse your good behaviour in Christ. (1 Peter 3:16)

(211) Above all things have fervent love for one another, for Love shall cover the multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without grudging. (1 Peter 4:8,9)

(212) Be not ashamed to suffer as a Christian but be ashamed if you suffer as an evil doer. (1 Peter 4:15,16)

(213) Elders, feed the flock of God among you willingly, not for filthy money, but of a ready mind. Not as being lords over God's heritage, but being as examples of Christ to the flock. When the Chief Shepherd (Lord Jesus Christ) appears you shall recieve a crown of glory which does not fade away. (1 Peter 5:1-4)

(214) Youngsters, submit yourself unto the Elder(s). All of you be submissive one to another and be clothed with humility for God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble. (1 Peter 5:5)

(215) Do not be led away with the error of the wicked but grow in grace and grown in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 3:17,18)

(216) Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. (1 John 2:15-17)

(217) Keep yourselves away from idols. (1 John 5:21)

He that overcometh and keepeth my Commandments unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations. God will give him the Morning Star. God will clothe him/her in white raiment and his/her name will not be blotted out from the Book of Life. I will write upon him/her a new name. I will grant him/her to sit with me in my throne. (Revelations 2:26-28, 3:5,12,21)

These are the Commandments found in the New Testament for help and guidance towards successful and deeper christian living. If we break any of the Commandments we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ (1 John 2:1,2). If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:8-9)

It is practically impossible to follow all the above commandments right from the time any human being is born-again and until death. We all falter now and then as we are human beings but we need to repent before God and continue our christian life until the end. If after reading these commandments, you start judging other christians then you have failed as a christian. We need to examine our own lives and judge ourselves and keep the Commandments. There are many such commandments in the New Testament. If you follow some of these commandments and despise another christian who is not able to follow the commandments then you have failed as a christian. Do not try to gauge other christians by these high standards but look at your own life and improve your own self. Pressurizing other christians (like a dictator) to follow the above commandments will only make you a beast because God allows each of His children to grow at his/her own pace.

I am altogether unworthy to write this article. But, i hope this will be as a general guidance to those who are new to the New Testament way of living.

May our Heavenly Father and our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ grant us wisdom, grace and the power of the Holy Spirit so that we may be able to keep all His Commandments unto the end of our lives. Amen.

Whoo-hoo! Do away with 10 of them because of the Sabbath issue and because we are 'not under the law but under grace', and subsitute those 10 with 217! Good trade!

There are only 10 commandments made enlarged and manifest under a new Spirit in Christ. All you have said are the results of a changed heart and a renewed life lived as a Christian.

When Christ said, if you love me, keep my commandments, He was talking about the 10 commmandments. He emphasised this by bringing them to the attention of the rich, young ruler.

All your quotes are merely love made manifest in our actions when we become a new creature. They are not 'new' or replacing any of the moral law.

And to think,,,it can all be summed up in just two.

Mat 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

Mat 22:38 This is the first and great commandment.

Mat 22:39 And the second [is] like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Mat 22:40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

At the very beginning of the Bible, God shows us He created the Sabbath.

At the very end of the Bible, notice the description of those who are allowed entry into the Holy City, which symbolizes salvation, and God's kingdom: "Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city" (Rev. 22:14).

God's true church is described as but a remnant during the coming Great Tribulation and Day of the Lord. What will that persecuted remnant church be doing? "And the dragon [Satan] was angry with the woman [the true church], and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ" (Rev. 12:17).

It is so easy to just say Love God and Love your neighbor as yourself. But the entire Bible expands on what Love really is.
The 10 commandments as found in Exodus 20:3-17 is the guideline, summed up in just a few words, while the rest of the Bible expounds and details every single one of the 10 commandments.

Jesus Christ came to 'magify the Law and make it honorable', (Isaiah 42:21).
His life's actions, and words were put into print for us to study, as though our lives depended on it....BECAUSE IT DOES !

I wholeheartedly agree with Jay T's reply. :biggrin

Although these are not exactly the commandments which Lord Jesus Christ spoke, still they can be followed. Some of us know that we have to love God above all and to love our neighbours but we don't know how and what to do. I guess this is what the Author explains in this article. The rest of the Bible in the New Testament is the living and explanation of the 2 Great Commandments which Lord Jesus Christ spoke.

All i can say to those who already know these things is that this article is a good reminder of how one ought to be as a follower of Lord Jesus Christ. After Lord Jesus Christ came, He spoke about a much spiritually higher standard than the Ten Commandments of the Old Testament.

In my opinion, every christian ought to follow the Ten Commandments of the Old Testament and also the many teachings of the New Testaments spoken by Lord Jesus Christ, His Disciples and our early Church Fathers. If one follows the New Testament teachings, then, one is also following the Ten Commandments too.

One of the missions of Jesus Christ coming to our world was to 'magnify the Law and make it honorable'(Isaiah 42:21).... as the religious leaders of his time, were making God's Law of Love (10 commandments) a burden.
The religious leaders of today are doing the same work, rendering the Law of God null and void, instead of setting it before the people, as the very standard of Righteousness.
In my opinion, every christian ought to follow the Ten Commandments of the Old Testament and also the many teachings of the New Testaments spoken by Lord Jesus Christ, His Disciples and our early Church Fathers. I personally don't like the terms: Old Testament, New Testament.
The entire Bible is God's word, and there is not one part, more essential than the other !

In fact, those who study the 'New', without the knowledge of the 'Old'....will find themselves as this Bible verse describes:
"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children". (Hosea 4:6).

It is so easy to just say Love God and Love your neighbor as yourself. But the entire Bible expands on what Love really is.

Do they hate the commandments which Christ summarized, saying, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and all thy mind"? No, they all agree that we should love God, because He first loved us. Few know that the love of God is defined in the Bible as keeping His Ten Commandments: "For this IS the love of God, that we keep His commandments, and His commandments are not grievous" -- 1 John 5:3.

Jay T : I agree with you that one has to have the knowledge of both the old and the new testament because they are both given to us in the Bible. But, the teachings of Lord Jesus Christ are far superior than the 10 commandments and by this we are not removing the 10 commandments but keeping them. For example in the 10 commandments we have "Thou shalt not hate" but Lord Jesus Christ said "If you hate your brother then you are guilty of murder". Another example is "Thou shalt not commit adultery" but Lord Jesus Christ said "If you lust in your heart upon a woman as if you have committed adultery with her then you have already committed adultery with her". I hope you got my point. Maybe i could not explain much better in my earlier reply.

I am sure the Author in no way wants to demean or despise the 10 Commandments given by the Lord. Also i think the Author must have had the following verse in his/her mind before writing this article :-

Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 14:37 says "If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord."

I wouldn't necessarily say 'superior'. Christ merely 'magnified' what was already there. The fact that He placed greater importance on the existing law, and not lesser importance, means that the law is not only still binding, but that man is held to an even higher standard because of it. This means the whole law. That includes the Sabbath. Christ magnified that law by healing on the Sabbath and admonishing the Pharisees for making it a burden.

Why people can't understand, believe and follow Christ's obvious example and instead take Paul's words out of context to do away with the commandments is nothing more then choosing to be ignorant of what the Word says and wanting believe pre-existing assumptions regardless of the cost.

  • Galatians 3:2 This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? NASU

This fulfills the righteous requirements of the law, 'according to the spirit'.

wow do you mind if I use this for my biblebash forum it could start about 217 topics at least :biggrin

Firstly the author of this piece has put a heck of a lot of effort into this work.

There are one or two other instructions that should have been added, and one or two that should have been ommitted from the list, however it does no harm to take these things on board.

From what you say here, it is clear you don't understand the Bible in the least !!!

Christ is the one who, wrote the 10 commandments on Mt. Sinai !

"THe Law of the Lord is PERFECT...converting the soul", (Psalms 19:7).

HI there!

:biggrin

It seems in Christian apologetics that those who are "against" the Word of God, use it to the point of abuse, taking it out of context, and pointing to some Old Testament law and saying... but God did this, or God ordered that...

Most of the time, that is because the text of the word "commandment" is taken to be one specific word, when the Bible uses many words for "law" and "commandment"... and it presents a different context.
When you question the context of the Bible, it is usually better just to take a look at the Hebrew or the Greek meaning of the word.

The Old Testament use of "commandment" ...

"miswah", which is "commandment" and which is used 181 times....

but there is also

"hoq" which is "statutes"

and "torah" which is "law"

They both equate closely to "miswah"... meaning commandment.

"peh" which is "mouth" which is used 400+ times and is translated "commandment" 37 times in the AV.

And when you go to the New Testament, there are five words in Greek

"nomos" which is "of any law whatsoever"

"diatagma which is "that which is imposed by decree or law,"

"entole" which is "a charge or commandment"

"entalma" which is "a commission or commandment"

"epitage" which is "authority with commandment"

So... the context is important as to whether it is "law" pertaining to "charge", "authority", "religion", or just plain a commandment or utterance.

then, here's another Greek word, "prostagma" meaning "order, commandment, injunction".

Is there no limit to the words for "command"?

"Torah" can be translated as many different types of law...

1) prophetic teaching
2) Messianic
3) priestly instruction
4) legal
5) codes of law
6) Mosaic Law

Then we move on to the commandment given by Christ.... "to love the Lord God" first, and "to love your neighbor as yourself"..... teachings of the House of Hillel in Capernuam where Jesus lived after leaving Nazareth and Hasedic teachings.

And in Mark 12, the word for commandment is...

"entole"

We have a "match"!!!!!

"entole" is the Greek translation of "miswah" and which is related to the "moral and religious precepts" of the rendering of law.

Then, in the New Testament, there is the apostle Paul and his "commandments" for living. Paul has not identified that he is posting over the commandments of God; however, he is giving his interpretatiaon of the people's inquires based upon his knowledge of the "miswah", "hoq", "torah","peh", "diatagma",
"entole", "entalma", "nomos" and "prostagma".

Paul was a very intelligent man, knowledgeable in both Greek and Hebrew, knowledgeble in both Jewish teachings and Roman law. He knew what he was say, and he said what he meant to say.

Paul is easily misunderstood when he is taken "literally" in English which has "unified" the word for commandment to cover all areas of "law".

Context, in relation to the rest of the Word of God, does not mean that a Christian is bending or twisting the Word of God to fit the need as so many unbeliever seem to imply.

Can anyone besides me see the problem when someone says...

"But God said that's a law!"
"But God gave us that commandment!"
"But Jesus said!"
"But Paul says!"

In context, it can up be reconciled... and complementary, not contradictory.

Obedience is everything !

Man became lost thru DISobedience (Genesis 3)......and, man becomes saved, thru obedience (Revelation 22:14).

Jesus Christ is Lord of Obedient people.
Satan is Lord of the disobedient people.

Christians are LawKeepers.
Sinners are LawBreakers.

You missed the whole point of the posting.

Jesus Christ is Lord of Obedient people.
Satan is Lord of the disobedient people.

That certainly isn't true.

Just because one is redeemed and a child of the King does not mean that they will never, ever sin again. Being redeemed doesn't make one perfect, just perfectly forgiven.

Sin is disobedience, right? So, therefore you imply that the relationship as a child of the King is relative to obedient. That relationship as a child of the King begins with redepmtion. The plan of salvation in my Bible says I am saved by faith... not submission to Lordship salvation.

You err in biblical doctine in that statement. Do a google for "lordship salvation" and you will learn that one does not make Christ the Lord, He was Lord before the incarnation, and He was born Lord at the incarnation.

Luke 2:11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

And He will be Lord for eternity no matter who man serves.

[quote:edd01]
That certainly isn't true.
It is only UNtrue to those who do not believe Jesus Christ and what He said.
Jesus said: 'go and sin no more' (John 5:14 & John 8:11).
I believe Jesus meant what he said.
Just because one is redeemed and a child of the King does not mean that they will never, ever sin again. Being redeemed doesn't make one perfect, just perfectly forgiven.
The Bible points out a people who know Christ 'can' make them perfect, because they have permitted him to work in their lives.

Revelation 14:4 "These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were [redeemed from among men], being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb.
14:5 And in their mouth was found no guile .....for they are without fault .....before the throne of God".

Revelation 14:12 "Here is the patience of the saints: here [are] they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus".
Sin is disobedience, right? So, therefore you imply that the relationship as a child of the King is relative to obedient. That relationship as a child of the King begins with redepmtion. The plan of salvation in my Bible says I am saved by faith...
Fact #1.) faith is believing what the Bible says:
John 15:10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

Jesus was obedient .....as an example for us to follow.

You err in biblical doctine in that statement.
[/quote:edd01] Show me the error in this Bible verse:

1 John 2:3 ""And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him".

And, tell me that obedience is not involved here.

Only those who love....Jesus Christ, can understand His statement: "IF..you love me, keep my commandments", (John 14:15).

I find it very funny how so many say, "Christ instituted 2 new commandments of love that abolished the 10 commandments of stone.

First off, it is hard to understand how God could have created a faulty moral law to begin with that needed to be replaced, but anyway...

Let's settle this ludicrous argument once and for all. What were these two commandments and what did they mean. Lets let the lawyer and Jesus clarify things

And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tempted him saying, 'Master, what shall I do to inhereit eternal life?' He said unto him, "What is written in the law? What do you read?'

And he answered said, 'Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul and with all thy mind. And thy neighbor as thyself'. Luke 10:25-27

Hmm. Interesting. I guess that these aren't so new after all if they are written in the law this man has followed. Where from the law would he have found this?

And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul and with all thy might - Deuteronomy 6:5

Hmm...I don't recall this replacing the 10 commandments in Moses' time. Perhaps the law was already abolished by Deuteronomy?

Jesus said, "All the law and the prophets hang on these two laws." In other words, they can be summed up in love. The whole basis of God's moral law is love. The Jews had forgotten that. The first 4 commands have to do with love for God. How can we not put idols in front of God, take His name in vain or make a graven image out of Him and yet, trample His holy day with abandon? All show our love for God. Jesus wasn't neglecting the Sabbath when He said this.

If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love, even as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in His love - John 15: 10

So we see that God's commandments are the same thing as Christ's commandments. Rather than Christ abolishing the 10 commandments, including the Sabbath, we see that He came to uphold them and he taught others to as well.

I wish so many people would see the illogical reasoning of trying to seperate the Sabbath from the rest of God's commands of love. There is no biblical basis for it in the whole of the law. Either you follow all of them, or none of them. They are all part of the same law. Either the entire 10 commandments are for the Jews or all are binding on the Christian

I think I can answer your statement.
You know as well as I, that the Bible says that Satan has captured the vast majority of the Christian world (2 Corinthians 11:14,15).

And, you know that Satan hates the commandments of God, and the people who keep God's Law, out of love for Him (Revelation 12:17).

The often quoted, '2 new commandments' ( which are mentioned in the Old Testament anyway) gives no details as to God's requirements, as to what ought to be obeyed.

How easy is it that people can just say: "Just love your neightbor, as you love yourself" .....and you are home free !

And then, each person then sets their own standard and ideas, as to what that means.....instead of allowing God to spell out the details as to the godly manner of loving one's neighbor.

I wish so many people would see the illogical reasoning of trying to seperate the Sabbath from the rest of God's commands of love. There is no biblical basis for it in the whole of the law. Either you follow all of them, or none of them.
As James 2:10-12 says...you break just one of the 10 commandments...you break them all !

Satan understands this Bible principle only too well....and he has blinded the Christian world as to what that Bible verse really means.
