John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Lately I’ve been on a kick about words. Partly due to the fact that my kids are reaching their teen years and are trying out words, and combinations of words, far advanced from the days when my wife and I where encouraging them to speak at all. If you are a parent you’ve probably read more into that sentence than I wrote, but go ahead and laugh with mutual understanding, because you know what I mean more than what I’ve written of it.

Some catch phrases around my house are; “careful with your words”, “watch what you say”, “choose your words wisely”, “you may NOT speak to me that way”…..and the list goes on. Often I find myself having to take my own advice and caution in the words I use as well, more than I otherwise would. And so, it’s got me thinking more about words.

Did you know there are approximately 6800 to 6900 distinct languages in the world today? That’s at best guess from the experts; people known as “linguist”, scientist who study language.

Some of these languages sort of overlap into different dialects of similar languages, but at best guess 6,800 varieties of speaking, writing, understanding a conveyed message exist in the world today. No other creature on earth has such a vast, complex system of communication than mankind.

Language is just one of the more obvious ways we are made in the image of God. Words have power, and for God the power is quite great. We read in the bible.

Psalm 33:9- For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded, and it stood firm.

Hebrews 11:3 - 3 By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

How powerful is that; to speak the world into existence? One of the more telling accounts of this is found in Genesis 1:1-31 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. ...

We have a very similar power, a similar ability in using our own words. We can’t create a physical universe, or physical realities with our words, but we can create things with our words. We can create spiritual realities that do lead to physical realities.

I have come to know that the single most powerful thing anyone can do is to speak, hear, write or read words. There is no power greater on this earth than words; language. Words can hurt, heal even kill, and we are in His image in part because of words. We don’t think of this as often as we should. Words do more than convey information. The power of our words can actually destroy one’s spirit; even stir up hatred and violence. They not only incite wounds but inflict them directly. The power to use words is a very unique and powerful gift from God, and it is the single most powerful way in which we are connected to God, and each other.

Have you ever hurt anyone with your words? There is this old idiom, you’ve heard it before; “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but…….” It’s a lie. You knew it was a lie when you first heard it. Probably as a young child someone said this to you and it never quite sounded right at all. We know it’s a lie. The truth is you can do more harm to a person with the use of words than you can physically.

What’s the first thing people ask after a tragedy? What’s the one thing people want to know more than anything else after someone if killed or hurt physically in some way? ……WHY?

We asked this question after things like 9/11, Sandy hook, or any other time someone seems to intentionally hurt us. We want to know WHY? We need to know why.

When we are hurt we need words more than anything. We need to understand. It’s not as if words will change what happened. We know that, but we know instinctively that words can heal more than medicine, or hurt more than sticks or stones.

Have you ever been hurt by the words of others? Yes you have. And you have hurt others with your words also. So have I. I’d say daily. Daily this happens in some way; Might be a small thing here or there; Might be intentional or unintentional. We are usually mature enough in our understandings of words and communication to sort of let most of it go, but it happens all the time.

Have you ever healed anyone with your words or been healed by the words of others?

I thought I’d be nice for us all to go on a little bible scavenger hunt. Ready? Now I don’t have a list for you to find, but I do have one rule. You can’t post a verse someone else has posted. That means you’ll have to read all the post. So here is the challenge.

What does the bible say about our words, how we use them? Find scripture that speaks about words and post them. You may post your insight and understanding on the verses you pick or on the verses others pick, but make your own verse finds unique. Hurry before someone else get’s the verse you want to post and you’re just left with providing your own insight into their chosen verse. :)

Jas 3:10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

Proverbs 26:18-19, 18 Like a maniac shooting flaming arrows of death19 is one who deceives their neighbor and says, “I was only joking!”

I've been listening to K-love and they had a short blurb about CS Lewis wore wrinkled or stained clothes and in general wasnt very concerned about his appearance, however was very meticulous about the use and specific meaning of words. He's somebody I want to meet in heaven.

I like to think Matthew 17:20 is a shadow of things to come:
20 He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you."

I know the message is it is our faith that makes it happen, but those are some powerful words.

My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.

2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

3 Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.

4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.

5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
since we are on this subject of tearing or blessing another. often when we tear its because we see something in them we don't like about ourselves.

How about Proverbs 18:21 and then therefore Deut 30:19. Try saying only what the Word says about anything everyday for 30 straight days.
Proverbs 18:21, The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.
Deuteronomy 30:19, This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live

Interesting verses in combination when considering the power of our words in relation to the power of Gods word. If we open that verse in Deuteronomy 30 up a bit to 11:19, we can see it even more.

11 Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach. 12 It is not up in heaven, so that you have to ask, “Who will ascend into heaven to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?” 13 Nor is it beyond the sea, so that you have to ask, “Who will cross the sea to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?” 14 No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it.

15 See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. 16 For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.

17 But if your heart turns away and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and worship them, 18 I declare to you this day that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess.

19 This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live 20 and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

so I should speak to my car brakes? I already know the problem its fixable without any $$$. I knew that when I heard the noise the first time.i just figured when I had the truck on the jack stands to check.

Uhh, yes. I broke down in my truck night before last and it wouldn't start. I have been having problems on and off for awhile now, but yesterday was snowly and cold and I'm a heater man and I knew I would need to roll saturday morning. I wouldn't have time to go and work on it if I didn't want to lose work by wasting time working on it. I prayed that I could just go start it up and roll. I believed it, so that's what I did. It started first try. Believe it or not.

:) Praise the Lord :)

I probably would have had time to work on it but it was bitter cold and I so I stayed in until I got the phone call to go work and then went and started the truck. :)

I have done that but it doesn't always work 100% of the time.

Yeah, me too. I don't know why that is. It encourages faith when it does happen, so it should work the next time too, easier perhaps. I'm missing something here. It doesn't discourage my faith when it doesn't happen, for I have seen the Lord do too many miracles in my life. The Lord does not lie, so it has to be in my walk.

:thinking

Yes, Proverbs 18:21 and Deut 30:19 because it shows the link between life and blessing and death and cursing, that each pair is linked and all of them are like bullets in the gun of your mouth, for good or for evil.
And yes, is in your mouth and heart to obey it, being doers of the Word, like in James and Joshua 1:8. Who is making their way prosperous? God? No, THEY are (we are) by meditating the Word (getting it in our hearts) and then SPEAKING the Word (doing it). ;)

And yes, do speak to your car brakes. My transmission was saved by doing that; I spoke God's creative words and my transmission (by worldly, cursed standards) should have been replaced around 50,000 miles but here we are at 130,000! Glory to God!

The biggest key is patience. Following the example of those who through faith AND patience inherit the promises of God (Hebrews 4). If it doesn't register with your 5 physical senses that it's happened, that is not a sign of failure. Faith is not in the senses, it is in the heart, and comes out your mouth. Think on what you are continually saying.

ok since we have apost taking the torah out of context. the context of the blessings and cursing are for the Hebrew under the mosaic law. the torah also never promised money or wealth for those that were doing it. in fact the torah has provisions for helping the fatherless, the widow, and aged. why would it have that if there wasn't going to be those in the land?
